Fixing Up Jana's House

Jana Duggar has used her home renovation skills to help her family for many years, so it is no surprise that the Duggars have been eager to help her fix up her new home in Nebraska. In case you missed it, Jana married Stephen Wissmann on August 15th. Over the 4th of July holiday, Stephen's family and friends threw Jana a bridal shower in Nebraska, and mama Michelle Duggar traveled from Arkansas to be there. While in town, she and Jana and a few of the Duggar brothers worked at the house (YouTube video link below).

  1. I am so excited for her getting to design and decorate "her" house. I sure hope there won't be ugly comments about how she earned money to do the remodel. Jana waited a long time to live her life and I am so very happy for her.

    1. I have a feeling it's her husband's money doing the remodeling. He had the house before they were married. Jana probably prodded the remodeling to begin on that scale, but I doubt she had to earn the money for it herself.

  2. I wonder if Stephen knew that Jana was going to do all this "sharing" after the wedding?

  3. What a beautiful, amazing make over in the kitchen. Jana has the aptitude of an architect..natural ability joined with lots of previous project experience. So nice to have family members install the beautiful custom made cabinets. From my experience..I had beautiful custom cabinets made, but we didn’t have the ability to install, so it cost us big bucks for the kitchen makeover, but love it. It’s nice to have such talented family members able to help with the remodel..great bonding time and sweet memories made, Michelle is always there, as always, pitching in to help.

    1. "Talented" as my family members might be, I would never have them remodel my house. Houses are investments and if you want to sell again someday, you'd better have had top-notch work done by licensed professionals. Too many "family" home renovations come back to bite owners later, in the form of improper permitting, improper work or improper inspection. I've seen those stop the sale of a house when buyers realize what they're getting into. Of if they have bought, it ends up in court. Thank your well-meaning family members but put the money into it and hire licensed pros who will do it right and maintain your house's value.

    2. 3:43. Look again at the video ..she spent good money for those beautiful cabinets..that’s the most important thing in kitchen, not the cheap ones from Home Depot. I would definitely appreciate my family if they were talented enough to install them,..And say thank you. licensed contractor use helpers, who may be illegal and have less skills then her brother. It looks like her brother was a perfectionist in installing the custom cabinets.

    3. @3:58 I have expensive, brand-name cabinets that were put in on my insurance company's dime after my house was destroyed. I had no choice. The contractor doing the rebuild sent me to the kitchen place where a consultant had already come out, measured my space, and drew up plans fitting these cabinets. Now the hinges are shot, they don't make replacement ones, and the doors are discoloring. I'd have preferred "cheap ones from Home Depot" that I could have swapped out or gotten replacement parts for. At least mine were installed by a contractor who definitely was skilled (I watched the install) and no, there were no "illegals" involved. I don't like that term anyway. I've had people from other countries do a lot of work around my house and I find nothing wrong with them - they are hard-working, nice people. One bought my old car from me. I see no need to ask for their papers if they're there with paint brush in hand, ready to go.

    4. 2:40 yes Jana definitely has an aptitude of an architect and her ability to use and read the APP for design is amazing. This skill and experience will come in handy if they decide to make their home a two story. It was impressive to see where those beautiful custom cabinets were made in Arkansas, in one of the previous postings..good investment to have them custom.. I agree she is lucky to have family that can help get this house in order. The brothers did a beautiful job installing..it will be nice to see the completed painted cabinets.

    5. Anon 3:58. I have no idea why you're knocking Home Depot. I've had them do several remodel projects in my home and always got quality products and work. I got to choose the materials, they sent a professional to do the measurements, and had skilled contractors who did the actual work. They guarantee their work and I was happy with the outcome. I would recommend doing that over other contractors that I know nothing about.

  4. Having seen the Duggar brothers in action on the TV show, I wouldn't want them working on my house.

    1. @11:39 I agree! Men and a drill don't equal contractors.

  5. It’s truly amazing how much they were able to accomplish on remodeling the master bedroom and the kitchen in that short of time. It was nice Jana had her dad and brothers so committed in the gutting of the rooms, as well as the assistance in the kitchen and bathroom remodel. So nice Michelle and the girls were able to join in the fun and help. What a lovely bridal shower, she is a lucky girl to have such a loving mother and now loving mother-in-law…and she is wise woman to recognize and appreciate these Godly women.

    1. Yes indeed. Most couples can't afford this sort of extensive remodel to their first home prior to moving in.

  6. Amazing. Less than 3 weeks after becoming engaged they are installing custom cabinets in the renovated kitchen in their future home.

    1. There's an old saying "you get what you pay for" and since this remodel was a freebie, they pretty much got what they paid for.

  9. Most of us are impressed with their choices of having professional builders construct their custom cabinets in kitchen and bathrooms, yet saving money by installing and painting the cabinets themselves. The latest utube shows how they used professional dry wall people to patch and prep for Stephen to paint. They obviously are using professional people for jobs that are not in their skill set. I’m super impressed that they both are hard workers and their dear families have helped them with this fixer upper.
