Dillards on 'Entertainment Tonight'

Jill and Derick Dillard recently sat down with Deidre Behar from Entertainment Tonight to discuss a variety of subjects surrounding their new book, Counting the Cost. Jill talks about the current status of her relationship with her parents and the last time she saw them together, as well as the separate nature of the relationship she has with her mom versus her dad. Deidre Behar also asks the Dillards if they would ever consider being involved in another reality TV show.

We have included the links to two segments of the video interview below.

  1. I wonder why Jill didn't discuss what that letter said. She talked about her mother crying and her father getting upset. Why not tell it all? Maybe, you hiding what was in the letter you wrote. If you going to tell it tell it all.

  3. Putting the family on TV was by far the biggest mistake and they have been living in the fall out for many years now. None of these scandals would have been played out for the whole world to see.

    2. @9:19 I would assume that looking at his bank statements takes away some of the sting of Jim Bob putting his family on TV. He doesn't seem repentant enough to have given away all of his proceeds to the poor to atone for any mistake.

    3. Well said 9:30. Reviewing Jinger’s book one can see that her main point in writing the book was to draw people to the Biblical facts that Jesus alone is the way the truth and the life, no man comes unto the Father but through Jesus.,,freedom in Christ . Jill has lost her way in an attempt to seek revenge and there isn’t one thing in her book that brought me inspiration.

  6. Jim Bob never saw this coming when he put his family on reality TV. Jill chatting away on national TV and Michelle crying while "Fantasy Island" dissolves around him.

  7. Bravo Jill for your encouragement. May the Lord use her to help more victims of sexual abuse to speak up and heal. Healing from sexual abuse takes years and only those who went something similar can understand.

  8. I'm tired of them harping on the fact that the police report was released and they felt embarrassed by it. They must know about FOIA. Their lawsuit for this was dismissed by the judge, who found no basis that the report was released with any agenda by the city to embarrass the girls. The city was following FOIA request procedure. FOIA is there for a reason. If you're involved in potentially embarrassing things and the police are also involved, then you have to realize there could be a records release. Jim Bob and Michelle should never have waited til Josh was an adult to have this report taken! If he had been turned in as a juvenile, everything would have been sealed. They created their own problem.

    1. Exactly. The family's information was so well known to the general public that even though the girls' names were blacked out it was obvious who they were. Can't have fame and privacy at the same time.

      Delete
    2. I know. The police did the best they could, but you can't put everyone in the family's birthdate on your web page and then when a police report is released somehow not have everyone know who you are.

      Delete
    3. I agree. They put all their personal information out there for public consumption, then filed a lawsuit because it was impossible for the police to conceal their identities in the police report.

      Delete
    4. Not when you are a minor.

      Delete
    5. No, you have it backwards. These girls was minors at the time. Prior to releasing it, they had full knowledge that these people was reality stars. They only got by with releasing these documents and winning the case because they knew the judge personally. The judge broke the law. It's like HIPAA. You don't have to say names to violate someone's personal medical records, especially a minor or if you have a big social media background.

      Delete
    6. I'd be pretty mad if I worked for that county and I continually got accused by the Duggars, when all I did was my job. I probably would lose my job if I didn't comply with orders, especially when they involved a federal statute. I remember at the time that this FOIA request was run up the chain of command for approval, and they found no reason not to fulfill the request. They can't be held responsible if the public happened to recognize the names of the ADULT people being interviewed by the police. If this were not true, then the girls would have won their lawsuit. They didn't. The judge ruled it was baseless. Jill needs to drop it. By still hounding on this, she's in effect siding with her brother, and I don't think she realizes it.

      Delete
    7. @10:28. Disagree. You've forgotten some important facts. The girls' names were ALL redacted - blacked out. The public could figure out who they were though by the adults. Jim Bob, Michelle, and Josh's names all could NOT be blacked out, by law. It doesn't matter if you're a reality star, nobody is above the law. (This is why we have a presidential mug shot now.) Also, it's not like HIPAA. FOIA is nowhere near that. In fact, exactly the opposite. It's a way to insure that information is not hidden from us, not when it involves an agency paid for by our tax money.

      Delete
    8. I can't imagine why they expected the police to "conceal" their identities in a report inhiving their family after their parents had put them on a reality TV show and disclosed their birthdates.

      Delete
    9. Ummmm it isn’t the girls’ faults and they were embarassed. They were kids when this all happened. They wouldn’t have known as KIDS about FOIA requests!

      Delete
    10. I can’t speak to the legality of the report’s release, but as a journalist I can tell you it’s a journalistic standard not to identify victims of sexual abuse. By reporting on what happened, the victims’ relationship to their abuser, and their ages, the publication identified them and should not have. That said, the parents’ actions during and after these events are abhorrent.

      Delete
    11. 2:10 Because they was minors. The law failed them.

      Delete
    12. 12:52 and that is the point of the comment. They could had easily guessed who the girls was and not to mention their parents put them on TV which was all the reason not to release it. They was not protected by the law. But it's okay for judges and police to bypass.

      Delete
    13. @7:49 The names (identities) of the girls were not released in the report obtained by the magazine that exposed it. The names were redacted. If you're a journalist then you know that the names of adult abusive perpetrators are identified, both in police records and in court. The name of the person who committed the act is not shielded from the public. In this case, those standards were followed. However, the family had chosen to be famous, and granting them special privacy is not the police department's responsibility. They had to produce a redacted report and they did. In fact, the Supreme Court upheld a decision about this more than 30 years ago, so the county attorney could cite legal precedent. Someone in the Duggar family...got a judge to seal the police report afterwards, which was an extraordinary measure.

      Delete
    14. @8:01 I'm not aware of any law that specifically protects your identity if someone famous in your family gets in trouble with the police. You claim "they was not protected by the law." Please cite this law so we all can learn it.

  9. Way to go Jill! I have the impression, most of the critics here did not read her book. She speaks very fondly her parents and points out that Jim Bob did change because of the fame and success and did things that are simply not christian and not okay that. She also said what they wrote in the letter and that they should not have sent it. So please, to not judge Jill unless to did read the book.

    1. Passive aggressive would define Jill’s behavior. You have no proof Jill’s book is true. Just because you disagree with people’s opinions don’t insult them by saying they didn’t read the book. The things in the book that can be verified are truth..the rest exaggerations or stories.

    1. Bleached blonde hair on the Duggar girls is shock, visually and in theory. I don't know what happened to home perms and only drawing attention to your countenance, or leaving what God gave you alone.

    7. Ha ha 10/3 @5:34 I once won a door prize for being the only woman at a meeting who had never dyed her hair (still haven't). Room full of about 200 women and only I had always kept the natural hair color I was born with, not adding highlights or anything. I seem to be missing the gene responsible for gray hair too. My grandmother lived into her 70's with no gray and so did all her children. Thank you Grandma!

    8. Lol, if you are home perming your hair you are not leaving it as god gave you alone. Besides have you ever tried to home perm hair that long without frying it or not having it take?

    9. @10:11 Those Duggar home perm years were horrible! Word was that Gothard liked long curly hair, so all the girls wanted long curly hair. Home perms are a mess.

  11. I thought Jill spoke honestly during these two segments. As a parent of grown children and a grandmother, I would like to add that there is something to be gained to look back in hindsight at our parenting journey when our kids are older and to acknowledge where we made mistakes and where things could have been better. Having humility, asking forgiveness, talking openly and honestly with our adult children is not a sign of weakness but one of strength that leads to even deeper relationships in a family. I wish Jim Bob and Michelle could see that.

    ReplyDelete

    1. @11:04 I'd be very surprised if Jim Bob's ego could allow him to see that or do that. I wonder how many other girls and young women have to deal with a man like that. Probably more than I want to know. Good for Jill for standing up and speaking up.

    2. She didn't have to broadcast everything to the public.. it's good to make peace, but do it privately.. Jill didn't do the family or herself any good by choosing this way.

  12. Personally, I feel like this tell-all book is just like Jinger’s book. Therefore, if you’ve read one you’ve read them both. I’m tired of hearing the adult Duggars trying to make some money off the same stories. Just go away already. Their need to supplement their finances, since the shows cancellation, is so evident.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @8:19 Jill didn't do this for financial supplementation. Jinger probably did, since LA houses, clothes, and accessories she and Jeremy prefer are pricey. Maybe the Duggars need to rethink that idea that women stay home, have as many kids as possible, and not work, if what you're thinking is even partly correct.

      Delete
    2. Do you feel that way, or is your opinion based on having read the books? What does your feeling have to do with anything.

      Delete
    3. I can tell you didn't read it.

      Delete
    4. Actually, this book is nowhere close to Jinger’s book. Jinger’s book deals with theology and faith. Jill’s book is more of a memoir.

That said, it is your prerogative not to read either one.

  13. Jill has matured so much these past few years. I'm happy she has a wonderful husband who supports her. Every family has their trials they have to go through, so I feel for all of them when it has to be done publicly, but sometimes that's just the way it turns out. While it has caused friction between her and her Dad,exposing the IBPL teachings and how they truly affect a family ,is going to pave the way for other families going through the same things. I wish Jill and Derek and their children, many blessings. They will get through this.

  14. Very good book. I'm glad it's selling well. Jill did the right thing to tell what was going on behind the scenes while the Duggars were being presented as an ideal Christian family.

  17. I find Derick the true culprit between the falling out between Jill and her parents. He comes across as arrogant and greedy. I feel for Jim Bob and Michelle to have a daughter write a book about their relationship and the perceived parenting flaws. No parent is perfect and clearly Derick encouraged the book writing to tarnish Jim Bob’s reputation. There are two sides to a story. Maybe one of Jill and Derick’s sons will someday write about their childhood and how their dad was unable to hold down a job as he was too busy chasing fame. He’s got a big ego to fill.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Excuse me 12:31? Of all the sons-in-law, Derick is the one who's always been most gainfully employed, right from the start! Worked for Wal-Mart and is now a lawyer. Unable to hold down a job because he's chasing fame?? More like helping chase people to court to get justice for others. I'd like to see any of the Duggar boys do half of what Derick has done for work.

      Delete
    2. Lol yep.. you reap what you sow

      Delete
    3. JimBob and Michelle were telling their whole family "story" for years on TV and the kids had to go along with it. Jill and Derick now have an opportunity to tell theirs. I don't see either one of them as being arrogant or greedy. They both seem straight-forward and honest about their experiences. I am not at all surprised that the curtain has been pulled back on TLC facade created for the Duggars. I just didn't think it would be Jill doing the pulling.

      Delete
    4. 12:31 Derick has accomplished more than any of the Duggar lads. Previously, he was an accountant and now has a law degree. He's working as an assistant district attorney in Oklahoma.

      Delete
    5. How is Derrick unable to hold down a job? He is a well educated professional. Passing the bar exam first try is no small feat. He is employed as a attorney.

      Delete
    6. I’m sure he is part of why Jill’s relationship with her parents soured. Money can destroy relationships. I do find him annoying during interviews when he interrupts Jill or always trying to get a word in. He does seem to like attention. Hope they can someday restore relationships with the family.

      Delete
    7. Well put, not aware about any of his problems with holding down a job but I agree with the rest of the statement. It’s obvious to most people that he was behind the writing of the book. You are correct, he comes across as arrogant and greedy.

      Delete
    8. 8:58- it doesn't look like the "Duggar lads" are struggling. Derrick might have a law degree but that doesn't mean he's 'more accomplished." Your statement is arrogant 🙄. Obviously, the other Duggar couples had no problem with Jim Bob's way of doing things. They're thriving, and they don't need a book tour to do it

      Delete
    9. Thank you 7:41, perfectly said. Now that Jill and Derrick have their desired fame and fortune leave the Duggars and sibling’s alone and stop putting them down! The whole family would be better off without Derrick and Jill in their lives.

      Delete
  18. Ya, it does seem like a roadshow now.
In this interview Jill describes herself as a force to be reckoned with in her family. She indicated with a hand gesture that her family fears the potential for conflict when she's with them. And she seemed to think that was funny.
I saw the recent video Jill and Derick just put out and it was full of success, adventure and the excitement of going traveling all about her book. Having book signings and more of these interviews. Isn't this all just like when she was in her family and they all did those same things? Now Jill has accomplished the same things just with the spot light only on her and Derick. Jill really seems to love the drill.
And the glint in her eye and saying, never say never to getting a reality show offer, reveals that she's got the showbug too.
When almost at the end of this interview, Derick attempts to say a comment then Jill makes another hand gesture to quiet him so she can continue talking! I guess she sees the interview as being 'hers'.
There's a sad thing about all of this because Jill is making points in the book about pit falls, yet here we go again...does Jill realize there are still new pitfalls? Or is she going to be in one when she gets it, (like Kate from 'Jon and Kate plus 8').
Does the public really find all this to be their 'entertainment' or is the interest for education?

    1. This is book tour, I think Jill is aware of that and when it's over she will go back to her life whith her children and husband. I think the whole thing is very entertaining but there are some interesting insights into how the Duggar family functioned while Jim Bob controlled everything the public saw.
