Jim Bob to Run for Arkansas Senate

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are hoping to jump back into politics. They just announced that Jim Bob will run for the Arkansas state Senate District 7 seat that has been newly vacated. The special election for the position will take place soon.

The Duggars have been involved in politics for many years, and Jim Bob served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999-2002.

More information, including statements from Jim Bob and his spokesperson, can be found in the article on the Arkansas Democrat Gazette website.

  2. Thank God I do not live in Arkansas. Candidates like him do not get far in politics here.

It is a bizarre time for him to run for office. His son has not even had his trial yet.

    1. It's his son on trial not Jim Bob.

    2. He wouldn't fly in my district either. I would never live in Arkansas or Florida or Texas.

    3. What would Josh's trial have to do with JB? If one of your relatives had a criminal past, should you not have a job? That's about how much sense that makes. Meanwhile, I'm thrilled JB is running. I don't live in Arkansas, but I support all Conservatives.

  3. That's going to be tough; Josh's legal problems will overshadow his campaign.
I don't know that Jim Bob is relatable to the voters.
I hope the election is conducted fairly, and may the best person win.

  4. I don't really get involved in politics but good luck anyway.

    1. Hope not. And his timing is soooo wrong. The family is going through enough right now without adding more stress.

    2. I doubt he would invest the time and energy into a campaign if he didn't think he had a chance at winning.

    3. 8:35 AM - Exactly. I been saying they are to confident. I don't think they will find Josh guilty. And also they need to separate the father and son otherwise I want to hear people complain about Biden and his son.

    4. Pretty easy to win if you're running unopposed.

  7. I am shocked and disappointed that Jim Bob would take this step at this time.

  8. I'm sure I'm on the same side of the aisle as JB, but this is a terrible idea. He has way too much baggage to win.

    1. IDK. He does have name recognition and maybe the voters don't care about his family issues.

    2. Biden had a lot of baggage too.

    3. Josh is an adult.. the baggage is Josh's. Not his. Look at our current resident in the white house.. his son is no better and has done much worse from what i read (not fake news media either)!

    4. Listen, you all know how the media treats conservatives vs. liberals. It's hardly fair or balanced. There is just too much "dirt" on JB's side for it to make sense for him to run. You know what the media is going to keep bringing up.

  9. Seriously?! He’ll lose handily. His son is on trial for child porn charges for crying out loud! I hope he loses!!

    6. Yes, Neddy, he has a right to run but 11:19 also has a right to hope he doesn’t win. Nothing rude about it. So by your logic if Charles Manson was still alive & running for office it would be “rude “ if I said I hope he loses?

If I was Jim Bob I would encourage a like minded person to run for that seat but I would definitely not run and I would stay out of the limelight. If my son was on trial for CP I would stay humble and lay low and work on healing my family.

    3. I am not in Arkansas. But yes. And even for most conservatives, he is beyond conservative.

    5. His comments on "individual rights", does that mean he is not a supporter of vaccines and public health measures? And I agree, @10:19, what does he mean by "pro-family"? Pro-gun and Pro-life, that is a given. Does he still believe that incest and rape should be capital offenses as he did in 2006?

  12. I wish him the best of luck. It's always telling about a person that can run in politics regardless of what's going on in their personal life. No matter what it is you need leaders like this that can stand strong through the bad storms in life because those are the ones that will stand strong during world tragedies and war. Say what you want as I know some will but my opinion stands. If that irritates you than move on :)

  15. This really doesn't seem like the appropriate time for a Duggar to be running for office, especially not JimBob. I hope the voters in his district consider JimBob's involvement in Josh's case as they choose their state senator.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I would love to see Jim Bob win the seat on the Senate, but unfortunately the situation with Josh and his serious charges might be all the voters think about when it comes to a Duggar. But I guess you don't know for sure how people will think or vote until election day so who knows maybe Jim Bob could get the seat.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is wrong on so many levels. How can you do this when your son is about to stand trial for one of the worst things ever, plus you chose to go on TV to try to explain how you thought that what he did before wasn't so bad?

    ReplyDelete
  18. That is great! I fully support this. People can't judge because the president and the previous president helped their sons hide stuff. Sin is sin. Doesn't matter what they did because it all equals out in the end regardless.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well the president and previous president didn't have sons who were indicted for a crime and are awaiting trial.

    3. Not buying that. Some crimes are worse than others.

    4. Nope, not all sins or crimes are created equal. That's why we have a justice system that metes out punishment accordingly.

    5. I used to LOVE the Duggars. I remember being 17 and seeing their first show on TV and thinking, “That’s the kind of family I want.” I admired what seemed like sincerity and purity of heart. Later on I subscribed to IBLP and believed all of those teachings, the same teachings that fuel the Duggars. But now, after the sexual abuse, the emotional abuse, the lies and manipulations and covering of wickedness, I can’t stand this family. They wanted their lives to be a testament to the love of Jesus, but now they’re a testament to how deep hypocrisy can go. They have betrayed so many and in so doing turned people away from Jesus also. They have been horrible ambassadors of God, and I am devastated. I have learned, through much more than just their example, that you can trust and admire no one.

      Delete
    6. Do you all read the bible? Even a simple thief will not inherit the kingdom of God unless repented. So yes all sin is equal in the eyes of God.

      Delete
    7. 12:12, that is very sad that you feel that way. Can you not separate the good from the bad? Unfortunately, we live in a fallen world, and no family, or person, is perfect. Maybe they did come across as a little too good to be true, at first, but you should see that ideal as a good thing, and the way that God would like us all to live. I, for one, am so thankful that we had the opportunity to see what an ideal family looks like, and even though not everyone will live up to that standard all of the time, it gives us something to aspire to, and shows us how wonderful the Lord meant life to be! I did not hear you mention the Bates family. Thank the Lord, there has been no scandal there, but even they are not perfect - no one is. I am curious as to why you are not taking them into consideration in your assessment. Please don't give up on living for the Lord. Do not let your success and happiness in life hinge on another person or persons' failures. I think, if you look around, there are many who are still living righteously.

    8. Then why are you on this blog??

    9. Anonymous @ 12:12- Thank you so much for sharing that. We're dealing with the same issue here with our 20 yr old. The last few years have involved many, many discussions about the difference between people claiming Christ and people actually following the Jesus of the Bible and applying the New Testament principles to ourselves and our daily lives and interactions (Knowing the real Jesus- relationship, not religious rules). We too, are devastated at how many in the general public have been turned away from God by the Duggars' behavior and choices in presenting this "wholesome" image (cleaning the cup on the outside), while other serious things were going on. We're also angry because now it makes it much harder for those of us who love God and are genuinely trying to to live a life honoring God to share the love, mercy, grace and hope we've found with someone else. At the same time, we can easily understand why people wouldn't want or trust after the hypocrisy.

    10. @10:20 You may have missed the valid point 12:12 made about having her eyes opened. I enjoyed reading her comment and could feel how sincere she is. I'm glad she's here and I hope she stays. I'd like to hear more from the viewpoint of someone involved in IBLP in the past. She may have a lot to teach us.

    11. In the eyes of God, all sin is equal in the sense that it all separates us from God. But I do believe that there will be a different punishment in hell for a child abuser, rapist, murderer than for a petty thief.

  25. Should Joe Biden be in office with his son’s issues? Hmmm. Anyway, these are adult men very flown from the nest. JimBob cannot hold his son’s hand 24 hrs a day on any issue in his life. He can be available to Josh and his family very frequently. They live in the same place! Most adults in their 30s have parents that have jobs or live elsewhere. So should he not run because he won’t have enough time to support his family’s needs? Or because he’s somehow responsible or accountable for Josh’s troubles? I believe neither of these is true. JimBob for Congress. Go get’em!

  26. I don't feel that a man in his position should be claiming he's pro-family, pro-life, and pro-gun. Not that putting those things together makes sense anyway (guns take lives), but he's in a bad position right now to try to claim he's for great values of any kind.

The Duggars are a lesson in talking to talk and following your heart. They weren’t “allowed” to have that many kids and he’s not “allowed” to run for office? They are the most appropriately behaved “inappropriate” people I’ve ever seen.

  32. I think Jim Bob will do great. He's 56 years old and still young enough to accomplish a lot. I can see him eventually running for president. He is a major asset to our state and cares about the communities. I don't think it fair to downgrade him for his sons actions. I do agree that in the past scandal he should had dealt with his son better but there's people in office that done worse things.

    1. I don't think JB should run for president. He does have some name recognition. However, his extreme religious views are quite divisive. The president is the president of ALL of us, not just those that follow Christianity. IMO justifying bad behavior by saying "others have done worse" is a poor excuse.

  33. Who is he trying to fool?

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is the most tone deaf, delusional, ridiculous thing I have read in quite some time. Like what in the world would make Jim Bob think that this is a good idea?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The quote from Chad Gallagher in that article is disturbing me. He says that Jim Bob believes that his life experiences, "even the difficult ones," have deepened his faith. I don't think his "difficult" experiences should be used like that or given that credit. Also, if Jim Bob's compassion has been "broadened," has he taken into consideration what impact those experiences have had on the victims? There have been multiple women and children involved. I doubt very much they feel "broadened." Jim Bob should not be using those situations to try to make himself look good for political purposes. If someone wants to deepen their faith, they should study their Bible and put its principles towards good work in their life. Don't use immoral activities involving others to claim that you're now more faithful. I am very disturbed that the spokesperson is trying to turn these events into something good for Jim Bob and his campaign. Do you see my point, and do you agree?

    4. It is completely appropriate to say that these things have deepened his faith. He didn’t do the things that his son is accused of doing. He loves his son and also loves God. I can’t even fathom what Jim Bob and Michelle have gone through. It is heart breaking. They will always love their son no matter what he had done. That does not diminish that they feel for any victims. They don’t get to make their children’s choices. I know a lot of parents whose children have gone down the wrong paths. It isn’t the parents fault.

    1. No not the person accused of crimes but the father of the one. There are victims involved in this who don't need this extra attention on their lives right now and who will be directly affected by Jim Bob doing this. Why would a father of a son who is accused of these horrendous crimes and about to stand trial for them bring even more attention and scorn to the family of his son who are left to try and maneuver through life after this disaster his son made out of their lives! Shameful!!!

  40. I think that if everyone waited to have a perfect life before running for office or getting involved in any major endeavor, then nobody would ever get anything done. Jim Bob and Michelle know their own situation and can make their own decisions about their actions.

Josh’s situation is public information. The voters in their area can decide if they want to elect Jim Bob. It’s really not the business of the rest of the country; it is about whether the local voters believe Jim Bob will represent the interests of their district well.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don’t know enough about American politics to comment too deeply. However, what I would say is this is a very odd time for JB to run for office when his eldest son is awaiting trial on very serious child pornography charges. I can’t imagine anyone wanting him to represent them or family values at the moment. If he was in the UK the press would be having a field day with this & I doubt he would even win enough votes to get his running deposit back. Not quite sure what he is thinking of.

    1. People running for state legislature are pretty well known in their community. 48. The local news is going to be all over this in the weeks to come and immediately bring up Josh's name and court case. Does JB think that will do his reputation any good or gain votes? I hope voters are going to question the claim that everything his son did only deepened his faith. That's no reason to have those things happen.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is not the right time nor season of his life to be entering politics. His priority and energy should be focused on his large family and their safety and well-being. If he thinks he has something to add to the betterment of society, he can write a book.

Say what you want but JB is a good guy. He only did what he thought was best for his son at the time although he should had reported his crimes sooner. However, there are people higher up that has done worse things. So before you judge him and you all probably don't even live in my state, the worse side effects EVERYONE. Be upset about that.

    1. @9:10 I disagree with you. Jim Bob did what he thought was best to keep the show on the air, and best to keep his son out of the juvenile correction system. We can look back now and see how much "what was best for his son" helped Josh reform and not repeat. Also, you can't use what other people have done to say how good or bad Josh's actions were. Only look at Josh's actions, don't compare. Saying things are not so bad because you've seen worse should not be anyone's excuse.

    5. A question to ask is if JB will sign up for family coverage under the very generous health insurance plan for Arkansas state employees. (Taxpayers foot the bill for over $1000/mo for family coverage.)

  55. He's running for public office with the specter of Josh looming large. Bad idea IMO.

  56. Yay! That's so cool. Congrats and I wish you luck.

  57. You are supposed to be elected to represent the constituents in your district. This is an election to determine representation. You are not supposed to try to get elected so you can mandate your own personal views and ways of life on everyone else. Jim Bob seems to be forgetting this and would love to get elected so he can vote his own way in state government again. His campaign so far is all about what he wants, not what his district might want.

  58. Is Jim Bob perfect? No. Is his family perfect? No. Can any of us claim to be perfect? Of course not. That is why we need our Savior. This country needs constitutional-minded leaders who will uphold Judeo-Christian values - at local, state and federal levels. If God is leading Jim Bob to run for office, we should be praying for him, not insulting him and his family.

    1. I agree that no family is perfect and we’re not supposed to judge, but leaders ARE and should be held to higher standards. The VERY serious situation in their life right now sheds doubt on his ability to be a leader. I’m sure there are other conservative candidates who might be a better fit. I’m also surprised that they wouldn’t see the inappropriateness of this choice right now. Doesn’t sit right with me somehow. Just my opinion anyways

    2. It's not an insult to say that the timing of this seems very strange, when we know that the Josh story overshadows.

  61. One would think he would want to focus on raising his family at a time like this instead of putting more public focus on them, especially considering the impact on the younger children still living at home. I respect people who run for office based on their personal conviction, but I think a parent should always consider their children first. I can't help but think Jim Bob is putting his personal ambition above the well-being of his children. Surely there are conservative candidates in Arkansas whose family lives are not quite so burdened.

    2. Right now he's running without an opponent so unless another candidate steps up soon, he'll acquire the office by default. How fast he entered the race leads you to believe this was being arranged in the background before the current guy stepped down.

  62. Politicians are a dime a dozen. If JimBob wants to truly do something to benefit society, he should step up and drive a school bus. There's a severe shortage of drivers right now.

    1. Did you step up?

    2. Why should he drive a school bus? His children and most of his grandchildren don't go to public schools.

    3. I like that idea 5:46. Who better to deal with a large vehicle full of children? :)

    4. 9:55 With that reasoning, he shouldn't hold public office either because he'd be making decisions and drafting legislation that would affect public education.

    5. @5:46 OP here. Yes, I stepped up in a bit different capacity. I spent 36 years teaching in our public schools.

    6. Zing! You're quite right, 2:58.

    1. Major cringe Yes!! That family does not live a normal family life…. That is not a normal Christian family .. I know I grew up in one.

    2. @ 6:32--Agree! Growing up in the public eye, without a voice of their own, it could be that this is very discouraging for the kids who may "crave' some normalcy and privacy. It's been a roller coaster for them for years. Maybe the less in the public eye right now, the better.

  65. I hope that Jim Bob would win. I trust him and Michelle and his family. Josh happens to have a sinful addiction. Hope he can get the help that he needs and I’ve been praying that if he is not guilty in this newest charge that this will come out in the trial and he will be vindicated. I have a feeling this could hurt Jim Bob’s chances but I would vote for him. I guess it depends on how the trial comes out. Child pornography is not good. Pornography is not good. Adultery is not good. But yes we all need a Savior!

    2. That was merely TLC's way of saying they were done with the Duggars without saying they were done with the Duggars. It's like the way politicians leave office "to spend more time with family."

    3. Frankly, I think it rather selfish of JB to run for political office and expose his family to all the nastiness of a campaign while the issue with Josh is unresolved and still an open wound.

  70. This is really bizarre. I can't fathom that the GOP or any organization would support this, considering the past and present criminal case going on. While Josh's criminal charges are his to face, there is enough to question JimBob's judgment and handling of his son's serious problems starting many years ago. I don't believe he's fit to be making public policy on anything. And yes, there are likely other politicians holding office with questionable backgrounds. That doesn't justify having one more in the mix, especially one with such extreme views.

  72. I believe he thinks if wins they won’t convict a Senator’s son. The truth will come out no matter who his father is at the time of the trial. They need to focus on what will happen to Anna and her children if he is convicted. Then go into politics if he believes this is the will of the LORD God!

  73. @ Jennifer Sumner, I believe you are correct. Some commentors have stated Joe Bidens son has done worse. I have never heard about his son downloading CP and I don't belive you can get any worse than that. I think Jim Bob and Michelle should just concern themselves with Anna and her kids. They are the ones who will truly need them

    ReplyDelete
  74. With all the comments about Jim Bob running, no one is asking the big question....did Anna give birth? In what Jim Bob said, he mentioned that he and Michelle have 20 kids and 22 grandchildren...now I know the only ones that are expecting are Anna who is due in the fall and Katey..unless Katey and Jed miscarriage, I would count Katey and Jed as grandchildren 23, and since their baby is due in April and Anna said Fall, baby M7 would be born between September 21 and December 21 as December 21 is the start of Winter.

  75. The position opened up and Jim Bob was poised and ready to take the opportunity to get on the ballot unopposed (so far). Was the fact that the other senator was stepping down on Friday widely known in Arkansas or was there insider information?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Definitely have mixed feelings about this. They parted ways with TLC to deal with things privately. Running for public office doesn’t seem to be a very private life, and I can just image opponents bring the allegations against Josh up constantly. I don’t know why they would do this. It’s going to bring their family under even more scrutiny. I feel bad for the kids, all of the kids, that have no say.

    ReplyDelete
  77. He has 19 other children. How are they doing? What happened to innocent until proven guilty? And look at all of us who are commenting. I think he does have a lot of support. And wasn't it social media who wondered what he would do for a living since TLC decided to cancel their show? Well, he's going forward seeking what God has next for his life instead of giving up. God bless him!

  78. What date is this election? He is running unopposed? That means he's already "in".
    Is this true?

  79. If JimBob is running as a "pro-life, pro-family" candidate, I wonder what his thoughts are about his state's high infant and maternal mortality rates. Their literacy rate is also quite dismal, as is health care in general. Arkansas ranks near the bottom in both education and economy. Arkansas also ranks in the top ten states with the highest homicide and death by firearm rates. As a pro-life candidate, it would be interesting to hear how he would solve these problems in his state.

  80. I'm thinking he's doing this for Josh. In case he doesn't get an Acquittal, he can somehow help his son while he's behind bars.
