DeleteYes Derick is my favorite Duggar in-law. I have watched the Duggar family ever since they started on TV. I've watched them grow up as I have grown up. I think because Jill was second to get married and her and Derick fell in love through prayer and direction. It was so sweet. I just admire Jill and Derick. I would love to see Jill and Derick and family back on counting on. I miss them. Natasha B.

You have an adorable little family and beautiful wife and I bet they found nice ways to celebrate you on your special day! Blessings for the best year yet! Next birthday you will be just about done with law school! I admire your perserverance through yet another difficult college degree, you are a good role model to many to go after what you want even when the road is long and difficult. Rooting for you always, Derick, you are going places, God has great plans for your life!

ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo of Derick and Jill. Seems like just yesterday I was watching the episode where JB and Jill flew out of the country to meet Derick in person. It's been sad reading in some publications that JB and Derick have had a falling out now. I do wish Derick a very Happy Birthday, though.

ReplyDeleteWow, Jill changed but I can't figure out how, it's like she aged or something. Maybe it's her hair but she sure looks different.
Her face isn't as thin. I think it's just a little aging.
DeleteJill had never had to take care of herself when she lived with her parents; she always had someone to lean on, she was fully provided for. When she got married, she thought Derick will be that provider and she will be a housewife. But she had to have a very difficult first delivery with Israal, then she had to live in a jungle, with no AC, with a small child. Then got pregnant again, went back home, but the husband had no job and seemingly did not want to work. Then another difficult baby delivery. Jill did not have that ideal peaceful life, she had to grow up and think and be afraid of what's to come. Her other sisters did not have that, they are being taken care either by their husbands or the family.

DeleteYou make it sound like Derrick wasn't providing for her. But they were a team both making sacrifices as missionaries. That was what they wanted to do.

DeleteOk, Jim bob had AC installed in their nice home with all appliances (running water/ fridge, washer/dryer/dishwasher/) While they were living in Central America where bad things happen on the outskirts of town, they were living in a gated area for tourist so they were SAFE. They were not living in the jungle. They were in a house with running water and appliances. And had AC, and were living pretty comfortably given the area
DeleteI stayed in Central America for several weeks, and it was very cool. If Jill lived there with her husband, had sisters and mother-in-law visiting, it does not matter if there is AC or not. Maybe the isolation of that house could be an issue of safety. Or inability to drive to Walmart. It's very nice nature around, great views. A lot of things happened after Sam's birth, still unknown what exactly, but he had to stay in NICU for 2 weeks, and then her family did not provide them with housing anymore, and Derick did not work but had to pay for Sam's hospital and then just general living. Jill never in her life had to think about money, and now probably Derick was relaying to her all these issues. It's an unsafe feeling, like what happens with her kids if they can't afford housing/food/clothes.
Delete3:05 PM: we don't know if Jill wanted to be a "teammate" to Derick. Based on her upbringing, she saw an example of her father providing for his family, and probably that's what she expected from her own husband. Otherwise she would go to college, get a degree and get a good paying job herself.
DeleteNot only what 11:05 said, but they also had armed guards accompany them whenever outside their gated and guarded compound. They posed with the guards for pictures on the beach, and you even caught a glimpse of the guards in the truck on the show one time. So if anything, Jill went from one bubble to another.
DeleteAnon 6:13. I never understood that "missionary" thing they did. How do you reach the unsaved if you live in a walled compound and are surrounded by armed guards?
Delete3:38 and 4:50 Before TLC, the Duggars lived with 16 people in a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house. They lived a frugal lifestyle and I think Jill probably did think about money during those years. While the family was on TLC, however, we never saw Jim Bob going to a job. I am not saying that there are no sources of income other than the show, but I see no evidence that after TLC Jill saw her father going to a job daily to provide for his family.
DeleteAnon 6:13. Perhaps I don't understand missionary work, but I think living in a walled compound and being surrounded by armed guards would tend to isolate you from the people you were there to serve.
Delete3:39, we did see him and the kids cleaning up rental properties several times. The film crew wasn't filming him doing what he did every day, but they did film him including his kids on the job. Just because it's not on film, it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
DeleteThey did venture out, with their guards, to the homes of some of the people in that area. Of course, those homes were very basic and did not include walls or guards of their own. Jill finally stopped going out of her home and had some ladies over instead for Bible study and fellowshipping and banana bread. Jill did admit that she felt scared, particularly one night when something fell in the shower and the noise sounded like someone breaking in. They left not too long after that incident.
DeleteAnon 3:39, Duggars lived in a small house until they started building the "big house" where they moved in 2006. Jill was 14 at that time. Jim Bob actually was doing well for himself, he has a real estate licence, he owns several buildings. From 1999-2002 he served in the Arkansas House of Representatives for District 6. He obviously did some work. By the way, you don't have to go to a job "daily" to make money. You can be self-employed and own businesses.
Delete3:39, mostly Jill saw her mother not working at all and just staying with kids, being pregnant and all. So it was the father who was supporting the family, making main decisions. Girls cooked, sew dresses and played piano. Even like, Jill got interested in being a nurse after they stayed with Josie in Little Rock, but she never thought of getting a real education, becoming maybe a doctor. I mean, Derick already has an accounting degree, why study law now? Why not Jill go to medical school?
Delete8:37- Jill would have to complete four years of college before she could ever go to medical school. Derick has already half completed his law degree and will finish sometime next year. It would make more sense for him to start earning money as an attorney before Jill starts any further education. Perhaps they're also waiting for both kids to be in school.
Delete8:37, she actually saw her mom doing a lot of work. I can't think of anything harder than parenting that many kids. And don't tell me the kids were doing the parenting. A system organized like theirs was takes a lot of supervision, planning, maintenance, etc. Entropy would set in very quickly with that many kids if someone was not doing a lot of work at the top.
