Abbie told Us Weekly that John has been an "angel," caring for her and doing all the housework. They have chosen a name for their little girl but are keeping it under wraps. I think Princess Kate has this condition also. Apparently, it gets worse with each pregnancy. This may make it difficult to have a large family, unless they adopt.

DeleteActually, I had it very bad with my first but had a “normal” amount of morning sickness and no vomiting with my next. Everyone is different.
DeleteNope, I had it in my third pregnancy very severely and more mild in my fourth. They were both girls. My first two were boys and I just had regular morning sickness not to the point of hospitalization.

DeleteDefinitely not the case for me! I had debilitating morning sickness with my first two, and after cleaning up my diet (plant-based, organic, lots of herbal teas), my third pregnancy has been a breeze! Didn’t even have a hint of first trimester nausea! I read some research that suggested the more your body needs to detox, the worse your morning sickness is. That’s been true for me!

ReplyDeleteThankfully HG is a condition that usually improves quite a bit after 16-20 weeks & in some lucky women it can stop completely. On the other hand there are some mums that have this dreadful condition all through their pregnancy & often for a few days after delivery too. Thankfully it seems Abbie isn’t in this bracket though. On the plus side it does not harm the baby, though if the mum is being sick a lot & is dehydrated the baby maybe of a slightly lower birthweight than usual, but it looks like Abbie is improving thankfully. I hope things go well for her for the final few months, HG is so severe it stops mums enjoying what should be such a joyous time. My heart goes out to Abbie it’s a very unpleasant condition. I’m sure she will be following the recommended diet for women with HG & all those things will help her feel better.
ReplyDeleteI had hyperemesis with all of my pregnancies and it would usually last until the birth of the baby in my case. The ER and maternity staff knew me by name and with one of my children, I was put on bed rest after my I became so dehydrated I started to hallucinate.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry she's going through all that but it's wonderful to hear John was and is a great support. It's not your fault your so sick and it's well worth the extra misery to hold your little one. We just have to work a little harder than some other Mamas do 🌻
Well, it’s definitely not for every woman to “ work a little harder” and suffer like that in order to have a child. Sometimes I think our bodies are telling us when enough is enough. If you were willing to put up with it more than once, that’s fine... for you.
Delete8:48, a little defensive? You missed the point of the OP. If every woman had HG, it wouldn't be a medical condition, it would be a normal part of pregnancy. The OP said absolutely nothing negative or judgmental about other mothers. She has gone through a lot to give life to her children. Why not give her credit for what she has endured?

DeleteWell that explains why Abbie and John were out of sight for months. Abbie was in and out of the hospital with severe morning sickness. I'm glad she's doing better now.

DeleteGoing through that once would be enough for me! I hope she does not feel pressured to have multiple pregnancies. I also wonder if Kendra had the same issue, since she and Joe spoke of how sick she was while pregnant with Garrett.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if researches have discovered what exactly causes hypermesis gravidarum. Some say it’s the woman’s sensitivity to the hcg hormone and others say it’s the diet. You would think it would get more research after the duchess of Cambridge made it well known.
ReplyDeleteAnon 3.27. To be fair there have been many trials into what could be the definitive cause of HG & most keep coming back to the fact of the rapidly increasing pregnancy hormone HCG (which causes all morning sickness in general). Some trials have suggested that a previous multiple birth can be to blame as the HCG levels are higher in multiple pregnancy & sometimes this continues in subsequent ones. However I know many women that have only ever had single births & had the condition. Also if you have this condition once there is a far higher chance of you getting it in subsequent pregnancies. Apart from that there is unfortunately no set in stone answer.

ReplyDeleteI hope she is feeling better because it's awful. I was diagnosed with it 25 years ago when I was pregnant with twins. I was so sick that I was admitted to the hospital at 21 weeks and stayed there until I delivered at 29 weeks. I weighed one pound less when they were born than when they were conceived. There were other issues with that pregnancy but the vomiting was the worst.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry Abbie. I have a couple of friends who also struggled with hyperemesis gravidarum. I know they were pretty miserable. I'm glad you have the support of John. Hang in there, you will have a beautiful baby girl soon.

ReplyDeleteI think duchess Catherine suffering from hg made this condition well known. I think a lot of people including me would have no idea what hg is if Catherine would not have suffered from it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely horrible that she suffered from it but her pregnancy and hg diagnosis splashed around the world made hg a household name. I don’t think Abbie Duggar, or Amy Schumer’s hg diagnosis would have made worldwide interest.

ReplyDeleteReally? I would say that if you are married and you choose not to have children because of possible morning sickness, then you miss a lot! Motherhood is so well worth any of this!
DeleteIt is brutal. I puked the whole time, and even felt queasy after. They gave me an anti-nausea drug that didn't really work. A few months after giving birth, they pulled that drug from the market because it was causing birth defects! So I was mad on top of it all.

DeleteMost things don't involve the risk of puking your guts out every day for months at a time to the point of hospitalization. Throwing up is one of my biggest fears. I'd rather get an injection or give a speech in front of thousands of people. To me, nothing is worth the risk of throwing up, not even a baby.

I hope Abbie doesn’t feel pressured to have many pregnancies if she’s not up for it. My cousin had hg with her 1st pregnancy and said she was done. She never had any more babies after that because she was so miserable pregnant. I really hope Abbie put her needs before being “quiverful”
ReplyDeleteThis entire family is preoccupied with having babies. I'm not sure how much pressure Abbie will feel in that environment. My hope is that she does what is best for HER and if she's not up to having many pregnancies doesn't.
DeleteI feel badly for Abbie. That condition sounds horrible, with the intensity and the length of time it hangs on. I’m sure that John is incredibly helpful. He seems to dote on her, and that’s just was she needs right now. I’ve never known anyone that has suffered with such intense morning sickness. Are you horribly worn out and weak when and after the baby is born?
ReplyDeleteThere are risks to anything. Not ever being pregnant increases you’re chamces of breast and uterine cancer so🤷🏻♀️
ReplyDeleteI feel a certain kinship with other women who experience HG. With 2/3 of my pregnancies I vomited all day for my entire pregnancy. It was so hard. I hope she feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteI worked with a woman that had HG during her fourth pregnancy and only daughter. She never had it with her three sons. She was sick until she delivered. But obviously not just a carrying a girl thing, because Princess Kate has had with all her pregnancies. Poor Abbie😟
ReplyDeleteA former neighbor of ours had this with her 3 pregnancies/ all girls. Coincidentally her name is Abby and she is/ was a nurse!! After the 3rd, and worst pregnancy, she said not a chance of going thru it again!! Good luck Abbie. I’m sure it’s going to be worth all the discomfort when you hold that new baby!
ReplyDeleteMy friend had that too. The doctor told her no more babies. She tred to have another one and samething happen with the 2nd one the second baby died last year at 8 years old.
