Are you looking for a mother-daughter retreat? In August, Michelle Duggar is scheduled to speak at the Commit Conference organized by IBLP (Institute in Basic Life Principles. The purpose of COMMIT, which was founded 20 years ago, is to "encourage young ladies to make Christ the first priority in their lives."

The conference takes place from Wednesday, August 14th, through Saturday, August 17th, in Big Sandy, Texas. To register, call 903-636-2000.

A tentative schedule can be found on the COMMIT website.

  1. Why do you have to pay someone in order to spend time with your daughter? I thought that was free.

    1. I've never understood why someone needs to go to a conference to commit to Jesus. These conferences are money makers for the people running them.

    2. So you don't think one should have a mother daughter day and go out to eat or to the movies because you would have to pay to do those things with your daughter

      Delete
    3. That's what I was thinking. Unless there is homework?

      Delete
    4. A retreat is a time when you can get away from regular life to another setting so that you can spend dedicated time on a specific purpose, in this case having mother-daughter time with other mothers and daughters. Most retreats I've been on have been welcome getaways.

    5. Of course, and the Duggars do all of that often too. These conferences are more formal and put an emphasis on focusing on important commitments to purity and other things the girls need knowledge and support in at this phase of life. I think it is wonderful! Get the girls to share with their parents this chance to stay on track and make the best decisions the can during challenging years. No cheapening of the temple of the Lord or being robbed of a blessed life. I'd be suspicious of anyone who mocks the kindness and attention being given to the young ladies here, it is like someone trying to herd them to careless attitudes and losibg their chance to become virtuous women through learning and being supported, etc.

    6. Forsake not the assembly of yourselves together. Where ever two or three are gathered together in my name I will be there....maybe Jesus like a hen wants to gather His chicks under His wings and nurture them. Like a good spiritual parent so they grow and grow up spiritually.

    7. Its a free for all out there. Girls need a clear voice identifiable and certain defining the truth and way to go. So do boys.

      Delete
    8. What they do and know and all about their various gatherings is by miracle it seems being shared over the world freely on the internet. People can get the meaning and apply it to their own lives if they don't have access to these special events. Keep positive, and glorify the creator, saviour and Holy Spirit....be careful do not speak a word against the Holy Spirit, no joke,

    9. 11:50. Do you believe that criticism of the Duggars or IBLP is the same as speaking against God?

      Delete
    10. 8:31 Thank you, excellent point

      Delete
    11. It is not = to criticising God it is criticizing the Holy Spirit exactly that Jesus warns against in the Bible.

    12. Parents should raise their children in the fear and admonition of the LORD. In many towns their are clubs to teach children all kinds of things. Seeing an event like this for the church and parents to teach girls about their importance in the community and how to conduct themselves and be God fearing, Godly young women - makes more sense than anything that I have ever learned about for youth!!! Its nice to sew a dress, decorate a room with crafts, feed food, BUT, what is the person all this is being done by turning out like?!

  2. what is in michelles hair? she needs to have a make over cut the hair and you would look nicer just a thought

    1. I don't think there's anything "in her hair". It just looks like it's very flat and in poor condition.

      Delete
    2. It looks like a red balloon behind her head, not something in her hair. I think she would look better without bangs but that is only my opinion. It looks too childish for a woman her age.

      Delete
    3. She had a make over on the show one time and looked great but she chose not to keep up that look.

      Delete
    4. Its obvious there are balloons on the counter. Michelle tried the do over and undid it already. Check out the shows.

      Delete
    5. I think it's her choice how she wears her hair.

      Delete
    6. Thou shalt not judge

      Delete
    7. I guess Jim Bob likes her hair as-is, which is why the makeover didn't "take."

  3. Somehow that outfit of horizontal stripes paired with vertical stripes doesn't work well. Michelle should have stayed with her solid black skirt.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. While I'm not into stripes either, my first thought was how good to see Michelle in something different than a black skirt! At least she tried?

      Delete
    2. Amen! The horizontal and vertical stripes together is bad taste

      Delete
    3. Agree. Not a fan of that dress.

      Delete
    4. That is a cute outfit d I like it. If you haven't got anything nice to say don't say anything at all.

      Delete
    5. It’s funny, Michelle wore that dress several months ago when visiting Jinger and the comments were all positive.

      Delete
    6. I have noticed that when someone criticizes what another is wearing what they are saying is why don't you dress just like me

      Delete
    7. When you put an outfit on some will like it and some will not. That's why I don't ask my husband or anyone else if they like my outfit.Because if I like it I really don't care what anyone else thinks. Oh, I do like Michelle's dress. Jane Renae

      Delete
    8. Patricia, I personally love that people have different style choices, however what Michelle is wearing is not flattering to her body, which is why so many people are commenting on it.

      Delete
    9. No, Patricia that is not case. I have no desire for anyone to dress like me and my personal style probably isn't that great. I still think we can all have opinions on dress if we like it or not.

      Delete
    10. I agree her dress makes her look wide

      Delete
  4. Michelle is getting paid because she is one of the speakers and her young daughters are going along because it's a mother-daughter retreat. Michelle sees her young daughters everyday, they live in the same house. Jane Renae

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just because you see your child in the house every day doesn't mean that you connect with them emotionally every day. If Michelle is busy speaking at this conference, when will she have time to devote to her daughters? She'll be in Public Persona mode, connecting with others there not her own daughters.

      Delete
    2. There will be workshops and activities for the girls. Michelle is not the only speaker she will have an opportunity to spend time with her girls. Why do people criticize everything this family does?

      Delete
  5. Maybe you see the red balloon that's behind her on the counter. Michelle's hair always looks nice. Jane Renae

  6. Anon 6:32. Your comment is ignorant. Of course you can do many lovely free things with your children. Sometimes you want to do something a little special - go to a waterpark or a good children’s movie or a zoo. It costs money. This is like that - a special bonding time. If you don’t like that idea, choose an alternative activity. Also, for the other posters I think Michelle looks lovely. I wish I had looked so good at her age.

    1. @6:13 So you don't agree with someone's comment...that automatically makes it ignorant? I don't think so. Did you look at the prices for this conference before you compared it to going to a water park, a movie, or a zoo? You can "bond" just as well for free, with a sprinkler in the back yard (a water park), a movie on TV, or a trip to PetSmart to look at all the little critters they have there. I see excited, squealing kids with noses pressed to the glass cages every time I go there. How about volunteering at an animal shelter? The SPCA has a program where kids read to the dogs and cats. You don't need to teach your kids that the only fun, excitement, or meaningful things in life are the kinds you pay for.

      Delete
    2. Nobody said they are teaching their kids that they can't have fun doing things for free. Some people on this blog just enjoy being negative and judgmental for some reason. It's obvious who the non christian commenters are on here.

      Delete
    3. Why does anyone care if the retreat isn't free? There are tons of things i cannot do with my children because of the cost, that's life. Seems like some are envious of others who can actually afford events like these.

      Delete
    4. If it's to expensive for you don't go

      Delete
    5. No one ever said you can’t do things with your children that are free. As I the OP said - there are lots of great things you can do with kids for free. It’s wonderful that you do those things, especially the animal clinic suggestion. Kudos for you, really. That is a great idea, one I’d like to do with my grandkids. If the type of gathering that Michelle is speaking at, is your thing, you’ll make it a priority. Don’t fault folks for their choices. I bet people who attend the conference do plenty of free bonding with their children.

    6. 11:08- Anyone with whom you don’t agree is not a Christian? That’s over the top !

  7. I like Michelle’s outfit and her bangs look cute. If anything she keeps looking younger.
Jennifer is growing into a lovely young lady and Jim Bob doesn’t seem to age either.
    Such a nice family....

  8. My daughter has just shown me the dress she is wearing for her graduation on 4th July, it has horizontal lines on top & vertical on the pleated skirt. It actually looks stunning. Mind she is 21, with a model like figure, so a black bin bag would probably look good on her. Not sure Michelle’s outfit would look good on me either as I’m more Michelle’s shape & age. I do however like a green blouse she has, I think it really lifts her complexion & takes years off her. Maybe a bit more colour on top is a good way to go. Mind you I’m in no position to give fashion advice as like Michelle I spend my life away from work in long black skirts & grey baggy tops, comfort is more important at 50 than what I look like.

  9. I looked at the website for this conference and did not understand what the workshops would entail. All that was given was workshop titles. More information needed. Eileen

    1. Any organization would have to pay to use the venue for an event, there is the cost of printed materials, there may be food or security and yes paid speakers. No one can expect speakers to appear for free...travel costs, hotel, etc.. Events must charge.

    1. So true, 11:43. I would never think of going on the site of another person, whose faith was different from my own, and criticize their choice of dress. I am Christian but don’t adhere to a strict dress code, yet I appreciate that the Dugger’s do and I admire how lovely they look.

      Delete
    2. Anon 11:43 If someone sells their privacy to the public for money you will get all kinds of comments from the public. That's why most people don't do it. They live private lives and have jobs so they can support their families and keep their lives and their children's lives safe and private.

    3. How do you know who's a Christian here and who isn't?

      Delete
    4. It's because the Duggars have presented their hair and fashion choices as the most righteous choices for Christians-- wearing skirts, covering shoulders, long hair, etc. They used to not let the boys wear shorts in the summertime either. It is inappropriate to promote these ideas as being "Christian", because their dress code is not a requirement for Christianity and even non-Christians know that.

      Delete
    5. @11:43 How do you know the posters are non-Christians?

      Delete
    6. Why would you complain about anyone who's not a Christian? Is that a Christian thing to do? I thought the Duggars had non-Christian friends. Jill has mentioned that.

      Delete
    7. There are plenty ofchristians who gossip, slander, etc. Christians are not perfect, and sadly there are a lot that don't even read their bibles to learn how to live a Godly life.

  35. Wow, Michelle looks incredibly beautiful! 19 kids and she looks like she is in her early 30's! She was so pretty when she was really young and never lost that! I wish my hair would grow that long and have that gorgeous natural curl, I admit, I am so jealous!!! Her figure is amazing, too! Jim Bob looks great as well. Gee, I wish I was in their genetic line, I wouldn't be nervous about aging! Truth!

  36. I would lovve to go , but I wear pants . Says women in skirts that hit the knee! Am I not good enough since I wear pants would I be allowed to go? Just a question. Not all Christians wear skirts/dresses.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since it's a conference, not a fashion show you'd think the people attending would be able to wear comfortable casual clothing including pants. If you go, you might want to call and ask about what is considered "proper" attire.

      Delete
    2. Nothing to with "not being good enough." It's the conviction of the organizers that women shouldn't wear pants, and they have the right to make that request of the attendees. Then you have the choice of going and abiding by their dress code, or not. If you don't want to wear a uniform, don't go to a school that requires uniforms. Same basic idea.

      Delete
    3. I will never forget the gospel accounts of when Jesus preached on women’s attire. Those are very impactful verses to me and should be to all of you.

      Delete
    4. Anon 1:46. Oh yes. Thank you for your reminder.

      Delete
    5. My mind comes up blank that Jesus preached anything at all about women's attire in gospel accounts. Please say what verses you are referring to, I want to read those.

      Delete
    6. Jesus never preached on a woman's attire anywhere in the New Testament. Paul addresses it, in speaking to Christians in the early Church, who were living in a pagan culture (many of whom came out of those same pagan religions) where the women dressed seductively/lavishly as a rule and women "working" the pagan temples often shaved their heads. Homosexuality (both sexes) was both "normal" and rampant in a sensuality, humanistic culture, so Paul had to direct new Christians back to their God-given identity and the role clothing plays in that (i.e. boys shouldn't dress in girl's clothing and vice-versa).
