LA Bound

The Vuolos are headed west! Jinger, Jeremy, and Felicity packed up their belongings and are on their way to Los Angeles, California. The Counting On film crew is in tow, so you will be able to watch their road trip this fall when the Duggar siblings' reality show returns to TLC.

Which of the guys in the photo do you recognize? Some have been with the crew for many years and have become like family to the Duggars. To read more about the Vuolos' new adventure, look back at our announcement post from March

  2. That's a huge move, from Texas to California, with a baby and house full of belongings all while being filmed for their TV show. They've got to be patient people, that's for sure. I don't know if I could handle it. Blessings to them on their big day. Hope they're moving into a residence maybe provided by the Masters program Jeremy is doing.

    1. No, it's like moving when someone is paying you to do it, and sending along at least 5 babysitters. You want to know what a "huge move" really is? Try driving yourself and your baby and your pet across the country because your husband in the military is being stationed elsewhere. He's deployed during the move, and there's nobody around to help you. Now there's a situation of sacrifice and hardship that none of the Duggars will ever experience. I'll bet other military families can relate.

    2. I have never heard of a school offering free housing to its students no matter what program of study they choose unless somehow he received a full scholarship of some kind. Usually that is just for free tuition, not for free housing. Do they do things differently at that school he will be attending? I sure do wish my school would pay for my house, I would decide to further my studies so I would have free housing.

    3. It's not so huge an ordeal. Just hire a moving company to move your stuff then you get on a plane and go. It doesn't have to be a long drawn out thing unless they choose to make it so for the sake of a television episode.

    4. That is a huge move! My hisband and I and our 11 almost 12 kids (i was preggo too) kids moved from Los Angeles CA to Texas last year...I would say be prepared for many many stops but theybjust have a baby so you all should be good! Good luck in crowded L.A. I love being in Texas!!

    5. 6:03 thank you for the sacrifices your family makes for us. I have 2 sons and a daughter-in-law in the A.F. 2 of them deployed to the middle east. I raised my children alone; their father chose to leave us, so I understand some of what you feel.

    6. Schools don't normally offer "residences" for married students who are in a program of some sort. If you live in any sort of student housing, you're expected to PAY for your housing. Schools are not in the business of paying for the lives of their students.

    7. Moving across the country with one child and no pets (unless they kept Jake) is not that big of a deal. My dad is in the Army and I moved 12 times in a 16 year period, two of those times across the country, first with a one year old and the second time with a two and a half year old in the car +4 other kids (including me, I was 13 and then 14 at the time) and a dog. The first one was a seven day trip and the second was a nine day. Moving is stressful, but under their circumstances they should have a fun trip.

    8. It's not a big deal TX to Cali with a 1 yo.. I know someone drove from Cali to DC with a 1 mon baby. You just do what you got to do.

    9. I don't want to hear any whining from anyone, even a Duggar, about how hard this move might be on them. They have no idea what single parents and military families go through.

    10. All the comments about their show they aren't on tv that much wish they were on more, and they would have moved the same way without the crew.

    11. 10:03, I suspect their tv show affords many of the past and present opportunities this family enjoys. If they opt to be filmed during a cross-country move, that’s their choice-all in a day’s work.

    12. 6:03, I appreciate your perspective-thank you for keeping it real for the concerned fans.

    13. I have friends who drove from ALASKA to FLORIDA (they’re military) with a one year old. Do you know how long that takes?!! The drive from Laredo to LA is nothing lol

    14. Retired last year after as a dual military family and with combined service of 45 years. We moved across the country and around the world multiple times, with and without the support of each other due to schools and deployments. Three kiddos, 2 pets and cars and household goods in tow.

Don’t forget to mention they DO move you. Even unpack and remove packing materials if you request and be adamant. It is stressful trying to clear and then in process in a short amount of time (esp with kids involved), but I was never without support of my brothers and sisters in arms.

OP, if u struggle check ahead into housing, childcare, sponsors, family support group and taking extended leave during PCS to relieve some stress. You’re not alone!

    15. Anon 6.03. As a military wife while a young mum twenty years ago I totally relate to you. Obviously the UK is a much smaller country than yours but I had to make a journey to Ireland alone as my ex husband was already deployed there, at the time I was 5 months pregnant & had to pack up a house alone & journey by car then ferry, while suffering severe pregnancy sickness.. 2.5 years later I did the return journey with a toddler just turned two & a 10 week old infant, again alone. I totally get your stress, & wish you & your family every good wish & safe deployment wherever your partner is stationed. Bless your family.

    16. Why are we comparing one move to another and concluding that the Vuolos' move is no big deal because others have had it harder? I've moved out of state a half a dozen times, with my husband and between one child (2 weeks old) and five! Guess what - every move was hard and stressful. Why do we have to discount someone else's experience to make ourselves look or feel better? Just stop.

      Delete
    17. @8:52 We should keep the Vuolo's move in perspective, that's why.

      Delete
    18. There is no need to keep their move in perspective. Moves are never a piece of cake. There is no need for one upmanship or comparison games. There is no badge of honor for suffering more than another person.

      Delete
    19. @5:17 Yes there certainly is a badge of honor for suffering more than another person. It's called the Purple Heart. God forbid we have any more Americans who earn it.

    20. 5:41, I stand corrected. Certainly the Purple Heart. But for a circumstance like moving, no. That's just ridiculous.

    5. Yes. Situation is deplorable through the state. LA has about 60,000 homeless alone. SF next city with huge homeless population. Governor Newsom not doing anything except catering to illegals. It's not illegals that are the homeless in these numbers.

      Delete
    6. From whaty friend tells me it is indeed everything you listed and more. I'm praying for their safety.

    7. No idea but i heard la has highest percent of homeless than seattle does

      Delete
    8. Look around - homelessness is everywhere. Maybe it's time to vote for people who care about this issue and will work for and fund ways to solve it. It's actually a result of other issues some politicians like to ignore, too - mental health, substance abuse, cost of living, cost of medical care, job creation, etc. etc.

      Delete
    9. My daughter and I were in LA. We did not see filth and trash. At the most we saw a few homeless tents in parks. I think you often see or don’t see what you are looking for. Besides, I can’t imagine the seminary is in the midst of the worst.

      Delete
    10. 2:19, you do realize that someone who needs medical care can apply for Medicade, correct? Also substance abuse is a choice, and the fact of the matter is many people could go to rehab centers, but they don’t WANT to. I know this first hand with many many family memebers of mine. It’s incredibly sad, but st the end of the day most crappy situations people are in (not all but most) are a result of them not TRYING to get out of them.

      Delete
    11. Thank you 2:19! I think the US must be one of the most heartbreaking places to live. To have access to the words of Christ, to have people saying they are following Christ and yet having third world like poverty all around you. How is it possible that so many in the church have no compassion for the suffering of those around them?

      Delete
    12. 10:22, you obviously have never been to America, or a third world country for that matter. We DO NOT have “third world like” poverty. We do have many broken systems (the main one being the foster care system), but it is no where close to being like a third world country, saying that is laughable and pathetic. I also find it outrageous that you say the church does nothing for those around them, that is simply not true.

      Delete
    13. 10:22 the US is not full of third world poverty, not even close. And why, because some homelessness exists, does it mean that Christians have no compassion? Have you ever heard of the Salvation Army, for example? Churches provide food and other necessities for the poor all the time.

      Delete
    14. I don't know about tents, but anything west of the Rockies gets pretty filthy every summer because it doesn't rain in the summer. I lived in the SF area for a few years and the dust and grime builds up along the sidewalks for months. It's pretty clean in winter though.

    15. It's like the 3rd world in some parts, just like Chicago, Detroit...

      Delete
    16. @5:36 That's not how Medicaid works. Medicaid does not stop anyone from financial hardship or ruin.

      Delete
    17. @10:22 have you ever been to America? Yes there are homeless people, but churches do help them!!!! Have you ever heard of the Salvation Army. They're just one of many churches that help. There's also homeless shelters to help people get back on there feet again. Not only do they give them a place to stay, but if needed they give them job training and clothes to wear on interviews. I'm sorry, but as a American Itake offense. The only thing that is broken here is the health care system.

      Delete
    18. People can always apply for medicaid if needed. Also in my state if you are on medicaid you automatically get mental health coverage along with drug and alcohol coverage to get the help. But, and here's the but you have to want the help. It's a choice for some people. Not all people but some. There's help out there for almost everyone, but you have to want the help.

      Delete
    19. Hello! Lived in Los Angeles all my life. No reason to be alarmed. They'll be fine.

      Delete
    20. Medicaid! Ha. My friend had to be nearly impoverished before Medicaid would pay for her stroke-disabled husband to be covered. She even considered divorce for financial reasons. You're allowed something like $2000 a month to live on if your spouse draws Medicaid. That's only $24,000 a year (try paying bills and mortgage with that), and there's a cap on what savings or other assets you're allowed to have too. Medicaid doesn't automatically solve everything, especially if one person is seriously ill and the other isn't, yet can't pay for medical care alone.

    2. I get so sick of people continually asking if any of these married girls have an announcement to make. This isn’t a maternity show they are making, it’s meant to be about their lives & struggles & Faith, though it could easily turn into one. There is so much more to life than having one child after another. Let Jinger & Jeremy enjoy felicity as long as they can before adding another baby into her (& their) lives.

      Delete
    3. Not a maternity show? Could have fooled me. What's about to air? Oh that's right...Jessa has a BABY.

      Delete
    4. Unfortunately, its the Duggars themselves who have made it a maternity show-it's all about who's pregnant and hinting around around "big announcements". It seems to be all they have to offer these days-far from where this family began talking on TV about their Christian faith and what that looked like in their daily lives. Please don't tell me that they no longer talk about it because the public (or TLC) is so anti-Christian. That didn't stop Paul or any of the other disciples and this culture is far from Rome or actual persecution (try the Middle East, China, north Korea, or Africa). Their lives really aren't hard and aside from the Josh-thing, they don't really have struggles (not from what they choose to share or show). They live a pretty privileged life-no jealousy my part, just a factual observation. I'm not sure why fans "admire" this family.

      Delete
    5. They are all young married people that's what you do grow your families it's theirs and GODS choice how many children they have

      Delete
    6. I do agree this show has deviated so much from what it originally was about. I do also think the initial premise that JB & Michelle had all these kids & how they lived a frugal religious life was an endearing & very interesting one to most families that only have 2 or 3 kids. However I am finding it increasingly more difficult to watch now as it has become all about the older kids & who is pregnant or who will announce next & this blog is just the same with people continually going on about “who will announce next”, & barely giving these girls time to recover from one birth before they want them pregnant with the next. I don’t think it’s a good thing to see these young women continually producing babies at a yearly rate, & most of them have no proper pre natal care. They all seem happy (or at least that’s what they want the public to see & I pray they genuinely are), however I do worry that these young women are not really given any other option & having babies is all that’s expected of them. If the next series goes on the same way with continual births & little else to show of these young people’s lives I fear it will quickly come to a conclusion as i can’t see it being the only thing viewers want to see & I’m sure this large extended family have so much they could show of their lives. I know I would like to see more of Jana & what she does, & more of their lives & what they do with the children they have. Initially what drew me to this show was their large family as it was something I was studying within my work & they fascinated me, I did not think all these years later the children would all be on the same path of having continual births & even for someone who is with pregnant mums & babies every day of the year (except my 4 weeks annual leave) I would like to see other things from this family. We have enough actual maternity shows on tv, the Duggar’s show wasn’t meant to be all about birth, it was about raising a large family. I also don’t think all the fans admire everything about this family, that is starting to come through in people’s posts here & many like myself would like to see other things shown about them. Yes there are some who will have nothing said against them & forgive everything any of them do or say but that’s wrong as every family has problems & no one is perfect & equally everyone is entitled to their own views about them without people coming back saying they are being nasty.

      Delete
    7. Fuzzyferet you are absolutely right. Alot of us do not watch the show anymore but instead just pop in on Ellies blog off and on. We can't even remember at this point who's child belongs to who because there are alot of them now. I always imagined that when they got older like this that if they were still on tv that the premise of the show would be them opening up businesses and working together. The only one who done that was cousin Amy. There is no volunteering anymore, there is hardly any talk about God anymore. Why would we just want to see birth after birth like they are showing. Those things happen all the time in our own lives. I'm sure the sons and daughters can come up with more things to do in life. This show won't last much longer being this type of show.

    8. Iv just had friends come back from living in LA for 2 years with their work & they just loved the city. The outdoor life, the weather, & they said the Californian people were so very friendly & welcoming to an English family who had never been to california before. Their only negative was that it’s very expensive to live there, & this was from two university research doctors (so not short of cash). They did also say they found a lovely Catholic Church to attend on Sunday’s & they were made to feel part of the church community immediately, with their kids loving the Sunday school (something our local church here doesn’t run for kids). I’m sure LA can’t be all bad. Maybe it’s not so fundamentalist as Arkansas but since Jeremy & Jinger are moving for his preaching course then I’m sure they will be advised of where the best places to attend services are. I wish them well in the move & hope it’s another aspect of life we will see on the show, it would be very interesting to see their life out there. I also like when we see them visiting jeremy’s Family too, it’s always a nice episode to watch. We never see Ben’s family & I loved the cabin they lived in, it seemed so rural. I would love TLC to incorporate things like that in the shows. I’m sure they must visit Bens family & it would be nice to see more of them.

    9. 1:35- I have many relatives who live in LA. Except for the high cost of living, they really like it there. My uncle pastored a Lutheran church there for many years until his retirement. You can’t always believe the negative hype coming from ultra-conservative media or clergy. There are negative as well as positive elements wherever you go.

    10. Interestingly enough, 7 of the top 10 states with the highest crime rates are in the Bible Belt. This holds true for divorce rates as well. None of the Bible Belt states are in the bottom 10 for either crime or divorce rates. There are many places more dangerous than LA/California. Curiously, the Bible Belt has a higher population of conservative evangelical Christians than any other region in the country. I'd rather take my chances in LA than anywhere in Arkansas or Louisiana.

    9. Agree anon 7.12. We do not know everything about their lives & we don’t need to really. However the people on here who go on about them being tv personalities & that reality tv pays their living are simply deluded. These shows pay around $40,000 per episode, the length of the series are getting shorter & shorter & there are an awful lot of them for that $40,000 to go around. These men must have other incomes, otherwise they could not live any form of decent life. Personally if I were on tv I would limit what I told the public too, who tells strangers all their financial details ?

      Delete
    10. Having a film crew come to your house 2-3 times a year is not a job or else the Bates men would be sitting home doing what the Duggar s do. Hard working men are a good example and a good testimony to younger men, teaching them what it is like to be a man and to be responsible. Why do people make excuses for men to not work??

  12. Poor kid, a year old, strangers following her around taping what she does. She'll never have a private, normal childhood. I can't believe the next generation of Duggars has to grow up like that, too. It's the parents who are making bad choices for their families. You'd have thought they would have learned after what happened the first time around when the focus was elsewhere and not on the children. It's time to stop this media circus. The show is boring, and here are the kids, paying the price with their privacy once again.

    6. They don’t have cameras around 24/7. Between all the different family members, no one is shown too often. They probably don’t film nearly as much as you think. They only show a few episodes per season, so they can’t be filming all the time.

      Delete
    7. 12:52- We have no way of knowing how “better off” the Duggars are. Having a camera crew following you around your whole life is not normal under any circumstances.

    8. What is "normal"? Having two parents and two children in one house with a big yard? That's only normal on TV! Lots of people have a single parent or have two parents plus four kids or live in an apartment or are homeschooled etc etc etc. You don't have to be "normal"; you just have to be happy with your choices.

    9. 1:34, studies show children do better in a two parents house hold with both a mother and a father.

      Delete
    10. WHAT studies?? @11:24

Children do better in a household with responsible, healthy parenting, and it doesn't matter if that's one parent or two, or two of the same gender. It's about quality, not quantity.

      Delete
    11. Does matter. Read stories of children who grew up in same-gender parental situations and have significant issues because of it. I just read another's story not long ago, and it was truly sad. A mom and a dad bring different things to the table, and a healthy parental relationship with one of each gender is the best case scenario.

    12. The Duggars grew up with a camera around them, but I see that experience as a positive. They are now great communicators, think fast on their feet, and are very well spoken. That comes from having to articulate ideas in front of a camera. I think those skills will serve them well.

Jeremy I agree he is just getting education in the field, though he actually does have college degree already.

    3. Ben has a job? Derrick has a job? What do they do?

    4. How do you know that Felicity is always happy? They only show glimpses of their lives. She is a normal loved baby, and even such babies can be fussy at times. It wouldn't mean that parents are not doing a beautiful job. Just thinking logically here.

    5. well said 5:03. Some complain that they don't choose to college and when some of them do they complain about that too. Many have to work by going to college but if you don't have to why would anyone complain about them taking time off from work while in school. They will most likely finish school faster and not spend too much time away from their family if they don't have to work while in school. More power to him for continuing his education.

    6. 5:03- So only Christians are afforded opportunities and possibilities? That’s ridiculous! Here’s the thing, the Duggars have put themselves on public display for profit, so it’s rather disingenuous for fans to discredit anyone asking questions, showing curiosity or expressing legitimate criticism.

      Delete
    7. The Bates work and everyone actually know what their men do, but with the Duggar s not one actual real job can be mentioned. Reality show is not an actual job or else all the hard-working Bates would only be doing that. The Duggar men and in laws all use studying as an excuse not to work.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous @5:03- It's really presumptuous and incredibly offensive to assume that readers you do not know the first thing about, must not know the Lord because they question or disagree with something a Duggar does. Just because their name is Duggar does not mean that each one of them has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and is following Him in their personal lives (as we all saw in Josh's personal life). Please refrain from making such overreaching statements and leave judgement to God.

    9. @9:56 So true. Most young couples I know, Christian or otherwise, cannot afford to go to school , while supporting a family.

  15. It will be interesting to see how they do with this culture change. I live in So Cal, and while the weather is lovely, it’s become a difficult challenge for Christians in a lot of ways. If it weren’t for family ties, I’d be finding a way to get out. I’m wondering how long they’ll last here. Seems like the grass was definitely greener where they came from...and the drive to anywhere was a whole lot easier! Even a quick trip to do errands in LA can be a test of patience. Praying you have a blessed experience!

    2. LA is a large city, but I don't understand why it would be "difficult" to be a Christian there. I'm curious as to what makes it so difficult for Christians to live there.

    3. Hopefully they choose a nicer area.. I've seen all the trash pile up on the street.. disgusting and sickening...

    4. They will do fine. Christians aren't persecuted in California. Large churches do quite well there. We should always expand our horizons and try new things.

    6. Why is it difficult for Christians there.

    7. 8:09 -- Unless you were on Skid Row or other isolated areas of homeless people, there's no general problem of trash piling up on the streets. Maybe you didn't stay in a nice area of town? We have great sanitation services here. Also, it's not hard to be a Christian here. We have many great churches, large and small. In any event, if you go where God leads, you'll never go wrong! :)

  17. It's interesting how they will settle there - will they buy a house? Rent? If they won't have a house, that would be a move down, especially for Jinger who is a housewife and probably values the most good living conditions.

    1. Really? Even housewives in apartments value good living conditions. Jinger is the wife of a student now so a “move down” is to be expected.

  19. It's not a big move, California is close to Texas. They also probably will be just renting an apartment in LA, so should not be much stuff either.

  21. I wonder how Jinger feels about it. She grew up in a family where women dont work and she has lived in more rural areas. She might feel uncomfortable living in an apartment and not have this relaxed lifestyle in LA. And family will be much farther g from California.

    1. Remember, Jinger was the Duggar that wanted to go to New York and loved it there. She seemed to be the type to thrive on the hustle and bustle, the always-something-new. I think she'll do fine in LA.

      Delete
    2. Grandma Duggar had a career. Michelle was too busy having babies. The daughters (and daughters in law) seem content (or have been programmed) to think that ladies should depend on men financially.

      Delete
    3. I doubt this is a permanent move. She’ll survive.

      Delete
    4. Jinger lived in an apartment for several months as a newlywed. She has lived away from her family her entire married life, it isn't like it's her first time away from home. She'll be fine. They were already separated by a plane ride or long drive from Laredo to NW Arkansas. Now it will most likely be a plane ride unless the family wants to recreate the trip in the RV they took in an early special.
The Vuolos also have a built-in community of "like-minded" people since Jeremy is going to seminary school. The school isn't in the city of LA. Surrounding communities have more of a neighborhood, suburban feel.

    5. Anon 10:26PM - Jinger never said she wanted to live in NYC; she wanted to live in a city, have coffee shops and Walmart around, opposite to living on a farm.

    6. Jinger lived away from her family since November 2016. I think she will be ok without her family being so close. Another thing is that she always lived in houses (except for couple of first months in Laredo). They had a 4-bedroom house in Laredo. Now she will have to downsize. She probably wanted to live in a big house as a real housewife, not in an apartment. Maybe though first year or so she will be just excited to live in sunny California and explore.

    3. Wouldn’t they have recruited another pastor? Isn’t that what all churches do when their minister moves on?

      Delete
    4. I think it's safe to assume that they will have a new pastor.

      Delete
    5. It follows logic that another pastor has already been placed there. Jeremy isn’t the only one qualified after all. Clergy tend to be transient anyway, at least they have been with those I’ve known personally.

    6. Good question, I was wondering why a Pastor would buy a new Church building and move the congregation there and then 2 months later up and move to take classes in another state. To be honest with you the whole family seem like they are teenagers without any direction. Thank God for the Bates and their show. They seem so grounded and I love the example they are especially to my brothers who are becoming young men in life.

      Delete
    7. Anon 11:14. I don't think Jeremy "bought" a church building. Pastors don't do that sort of thing. The CONGREGATION purchased the building so they would have a nice place to worship. Pastors come and go at churches. It was normal for Jeremy to move on especially since he wanted to further his education.

      Delete
    8. Jeremy didn’t “buy” a new church. Why would anyone think that?

      Delete
    9. Anonymous at 11:14 Did Jeremy purchase the building himself or did the church purchase it?

I know of a pastor who left his position for a different one when things were going well. He felt the Lord was leading him to something different. It happens. Maybe Jeremy possibly didn't know that he had was accepted into this program when things were put in motion for the church to move. Even if he did, things don't just stop because he's going to be moving on. It's not really that unusual for pastors to move around a bit.

  33. I personally wouldn’t want to live in Los Angeles. It will be interesting to see the family visit them because people there don’t dress with the same modesty standards as the Duggars. There is also a big difference in the cost of living in TX vs CA.

    1. Very few people, anywhere, dress with the same modesty standards as the Duggars. I’m sure they’re used to seeing a few shoulders and maybe even a little cleavage here and there. I’ve not seen them fall over in an apoplectic fit over it yet.
