Yesterday, we shared Jill and Derick Dillards’ exciting announcement. They just built a house and will be moving soon! Below are a few pictures of their new place. We’re curious to hear from our readers—have you ever built a house? What was your experience like?

Very nice house. But how does a full time law student and a SAHM conjure up the money to PAY for it? I doubt they'll ever explain it.

DeleteIt's new but it is very basic, no upgrades and very small .I built a house at the beach in NC and know how much everything costs, and with Arkansas being a very cheap state they probably only spent around $150k. They can get a mortgage based on his future earning potential as a law studebt.
DeleteAs a person with mortgage experience, they would not qualify for a loan with a stay-at-home mom and a student (even if he might work part-time). That said, either his mom or the duggar parents (or both) paid for this. It looks to be a pretty small home that will work fine for them since they will have a small family and probably would not have cost a lot (not over $150,000). Joe (Kendra) also commented on the season finale that they plan to build a house and we saw pictures of Joy/Austin building so it's possible Jim Bob has given them each a large sum to build. Very likely that's how this was done.

Delete@7:52 Nothing wrong with parents helping their kids. Most parents I know with money are doing that. Better the kids have the money when they need it than wait till the parents die.
DeleteI do not know how strict the mortgage rules are there but here, they would have had to have someone, with a steady income, cosign the loan. The only one capable of doing that for them would be Jim Bob. No one gets a mortgage, in anticipation of future earnings (he is ONLY in first year Law.)
Anon 6:20. "Future earning potential"? Banks don't make home loans based on speculation. There's no guarantee Derrick will complete law school, pass the bar and get a great job. Jill is a SAHM with no work history. Setting that aside, there's the "debt free" life they follow. My guess is that they paid cash for this house which would run about $150 - 200 K in their area.

DeleteI would guess they most likely had some money tucked away in savings for a down payment and/or family helped them. I've seen Jill promote some stuff on her instagram account so that would count as income and if I remember correctly Derrick is a licensed accountant. He could easily be doing some freelance accounting work. A house that size in a part of the country that isn't expensive wouldn't have that large of a mortgage...

It's a bit over 1,400 square feet and the builder finances the homes, even with low/bad credit. The cost of that house is listed at $918/month. I suspect Cathy or Jim Bob co-signed for them unless the developer required a significant down payment (likely from the parents). It's a cute little house but nothing near the guest house or stoney brook they have lived in. The kitchen is absolutely tiny and there's no second family space and barely room for an eat-in kitchen. Once the boys grow it will seem very small. I think this may indicate they don't plan to have more children (or can't). Either way, it's a nice little starter house. It also tells you Derick doesn't plan to relocate to another part of Arkansas once/if he finishes law school.
Jill has been on TV for over 10 years. Good income/savings there alone.
DeleteDoes that $918 a month include taxes, insurance, utilities, and upkeep? Because suddenly your $900 a month house can be $1900 a month, or more if you need to do an improvement project.

DeleteAnon 10:46. Jill is a LAY midwife. She's never had a job as a midwife and could not work in a clinic or hospital as a medical professional. Her paid work experience consists of appearing on reality TV. Derrick quit his job as an accountant after marrying Jill and has appeared on reality TV, been a missionary and gone to school. Who knows where the money came from to buy the house?
DeleteThey aren't necessarily paying a $918 /month mortgage. Derek worked for some years in the accounting field before he met Jill and may have saved up a sizable amount for a house. Also, we don't know whether he and his brother have an inheritance from their father. Jill may have savings from the book sales and TV appearances. This might cost them less than renting an apartment. And if it is 4 bedroom, they could even have a boarder to help pay utilities and taxes, if they want to.
DeleteDerick worked for Wal-Mart from the time they got married until they decided to become missionaries. The blink of an eye, one year or so. You can't save up a "sizable amount for a house" in one year. Even living in one of Jim Bob's houses, you still have utilities and food and insurance and all sorts of expenses.

ReplyDeleteIf they were able to get the house built with no delays in a few months, they must live a charmed life. Our house fell three months behind due to weather and inspection delays. The rent on the place we were living in was up and after getting a two month extension on it, we ended up in a motel for a couple of weeks. They finally hooked up the water and electricity so we could live in the house while they finished up the back steps, deck and driveway. Then they did the final inspection. Glad they didn't have that experience.
ReplyDeleteWe custom built a house; designed it ourselves and subcontracted it ourselves. We absolutely loved it: the process, the house, all of it. We would do it again in a heartbeat.

ReplyDeleteThis simply doesn't add up. A couple of years ago they were asking for donations to pay for their lives so Derrick could be in the missionary training program. Now he's attending law school and they've just built a lovely home in a nice subdivision while neither of them have paying job. How is this possible?
ReplyDeleteI have relatives who go to a fundamentalist church. When they go on a mission they are required to ask for donations. It does not matter if they have money themselves or not. So Derrick likely needed to ask for public donations and that has no reflection on his own personal income.
DeleteThe missionary donations weren't because they didn't have money. It was for the cause to bring people to the load and all the cost associated.
DeleteAnon 5:18 People from my church go on mission trips regularly. They don't ask for donations. They just pay for the trip themselves. I'll let them know they should ask for donations so they don't have to use their OWN money for the trip.
DeleteA mission trip isn’t the same thing as living overseas as a missionary. Both sets of my grandparents were missionaries for 20+ years and lived on support. Our church sponsors a number of overseas families. You may not agree with it but it’s not new or uncommon

DeleteThose type houses are called ranch houses. Builders usually have a bunch of houses of that type available to their customers. A "custom house" means they pay an architect to make some tweaks to the plan so it's not a cookie cutter house.

ReplyDeleteI don't mind the front door, it's the back side of the house that I find depressing. Obviously the front side is the "show" side and the back is where the builder cut costs. Also, that patio roof looks like it needs a third 6 x 6 support post somewhere in the middle. How can it be code to have only two? First high wind, and that roof will be feeling the stress without much support.
DeleteAnon 9:06. Builders always cut costs where they can. We once bought a home that had been "flipped". It passed inspection but considering the shoddy materials and poor workmanship I always wondered how much they paid to get it passed. Brick is expensive so builders often just do the front façade in brick. If the entire house was brick, they would have "priced themselves out of the neighborhood" because the house would have been so much more expensive than the other houses in the subdivision.

ReplyDeleteWe built a house and it was a lovely experience! It was a two story with a basement. Our children were young, six and three. I took them to visit the house often as it was being built. We baked treats to take with us to give to the men working on our house. My husband and I agreed on everything so easily. Once we moved in it was so fun to live in a place where we had picked every single thing in the house. I hope that some day we can build a house again.

DeleteWe built a house and it was a horrible experience. It took more than twice as long as promised. The foreman got 2 DUI's during the job and was hardly ever around. We had to watch every worker like a hawk. The final straw was when I found a bottle of Mountain Dew left in the studs, except it wasn't soda in the bottle. Not a day went by when we weren't on the phone with someone, fuming. And this was a builder with an A+ rating with the BBB?!
DeleteThe Duggar family has spent years on national TV preaching the virtue of hard work, frugality and living debt free, profiting greatly from this mantra. This couple who have NO jobs owe us an explanation of how they are financing law school for Derrick and the building of a lovely house in a nice subdivision. And we don't need fans speculating or making excuses for their silence on this.

When my very own nephew bought a house, I did not expect him to give an explanation to the family as to how he was able to afford that house. I'm not sure why you think, as a stranger to their family, why they would own you an explanation as to how they were able to afford their new house? It feels very confusing to me that you would expect that. And it's not likely that anyone from the Duggar family actually reads this blog. I think you are confused about the things that you deserve!

However, I'm left with the disquieting feeling that this couple had all this money available to them when they were appealing for donations when Derrick was in missionary training. If they want to get money through donations, so be it. But IMO asking for money you don't need isn't what Christians should do.

It's like you think these adult children of Jim Bob and Michelle aren't allowed to do things differently. Most likely they put down a big deposit or paid in cash with savings from previous income from tv/books. Plus, Derek worked as an accountant at Wal-Mart while. Bottom line is that there is no reason for you to get worked up. They had the money to do it so what's the big deal. Just be happy for them.

DeleteTo go into the mission field requires a lot of sacrifice from living in 3rdand 4th world conditions so you can reach the people to leaving for the mission field with no debt at home--- missionaries rely on DONATIONS only to get by usually supplied by churches or reaching out to the Christian community to help fund them while they are in the mission field --- That is how it works not because they were too poor...
DeleteUnknown: Derick and Jill were not living in third or fourth world conditions, they were living in a very first world comfortable home with all mod cons including air conditioning, it was also located in a guarded compound, they didn't exactly suffer on the mission field.

DeleteI'm not bitter, jealous or a troll. I also made a donation to their mission fund. They have never given an accounting of what the donations were used for. Religious organizations and charities are required to make public fincial reports of how donations are used. I have never owned a home, I'm happy that they will have a place to call their own....I just have questions.
DeleteThey could have owned a fully paid for home like this one this one they are moving into now when they married. Having made her done with school at 16 and not marrying until her twenties and the show you’d think she would have enough money for that. Not to mention he worked a real job and went to a real school. They could have then rented this home out and used the money to support themselves while abroad instead of needing people to give them money.
Delete@11:59 I thought awhile ago I saw a very basic financial statement like the ones all 501c3's have to give. It wasn't very informative and didn't say exactly how the funds were used, though. But since they were a charity, they were obligated by law to release a financial statement each year. Look for theirs - Dillard Family Ministries.
DeleteI think people believe they they are entitled to an explanation because they donated to mission work. Derek is in law school and they bought this house. If the money people donated for one thing is being used for something else, they have a right to know that.
DeleteI know from experience that having a house built can go well with no surprises, or it can be a very frustrating ordeal when things out of your control delay the progress or there are unanticipated expenses. I guess all you can do is go into it with your eyes open and expect the unexpected. The same is true for remodeling!

DeleteMy grandmother was as Dugger-type wholesome as you can find. She was in church everyday as a volunteer cleaner, bell wringer, invoked in choir and the children’s ministry. She had 2 children and helped raise her grandchildren. She was also a CWAC from WW II as a postal clerk that yet died at 47 from her body eaten alive from cancer. She didn’t see her oldest child past the age of 25. Was she not glorifying enough?

DeleteIt's a nice neutral color and will help hide dirt/stains from young children. They can brighten it up with colorful furniture, window treatments, wall decorations, etc.

DeleteThe nice thing about starting out with a monochromatic color scheme is you are flexible to add other contrasting touches and decorate around it. It can be quite striking. Gray is popular right now and I find certain shades of it rather soothing. It might not suit everyone's tastes, but it's not supposed to.
DeleteJana chose gray for the master bedroom update. I'd get someone else to decorate unless they want even more gray.

DeleteGray is the new 70's avocado and gold or 80's peach and dusty blue. It's everywhere, and it's going to look badly dated not too long from now.
DeleteI'm very sensitive to color. I don't consider gray a "neutral" color. It's very depressing IMO. When we moved into our house I let my daughter talk me into painting the den this orangey color called "Yogurt". I should have known better as she's somewhat color blind in the green/blue/purple range. It was awful. After a year I couldn't stand it any longer and painted the room a nice neutral color called "Doeskin". If the Dillards like gray then they should have it.
DeleteYou do realize that sofa, drapery, chairs, accessories will likely be in other colors, right? Gray is a nice neutral background and reminds some of us of a foggy day, which is one of the best kinds of days.

DeleteThose walls would be more inviting if they were a very light pastel blue, like a robin's egg blue but lighter. Maybe a lighter version of the color they paint porch ceilings. At least it would look like a sunny day, not a fog bank or a perpetually rainy day. There are so many pretty pastels out there that are soft and inviting. I think Joanna Gaines is responsible for the Duggars' love of gray interiors. She loves gray and they love her.

DeleteMy husband and I had our house custom built and we love it. It kind of irks me when people say they built their own house, when really they had someone build it for them. I know people who have actually built their house with their own hands, and it is hard work that I could never claim to do. Whenever someone asks me if we built our house, I say we had it built for us.

DeleteThere's also the Matthew verse about not laying up treasures on earth. I can't help but think of that one whenever I see the packed Duggar warehouses or the multiple properties or the numerous planes and cars.

ReplyDeleteWhy would the neighbors WANT to live near a famous person? I can't think of a worse fate. I value my privacy and wouldn't want to live near the Duggars or any other famous person for that matter. I wouldn't want curious fans prowling around my subdivision.
DeleteNot only that, you'd probably get those tabloid magazines scoping them out for pictures, or paying neighbors for stories.
DeleteMaybe the neighbors will enjoy having a law-abiding, quiet family in the neighborhood? I have celebrity on my street, and you would never know it.

DeleteI am really wondering how they payed for it all, considering Derick is a full-time student and Jill a SAHM. Not attacking them, seriously want to know because I can't even afford a new bathroom and I work full time and don't have any kids. I am seriously so jealous of them!

DeleteWe've seen Jill's decorating style already. Brown sofa, brown piano, brown table, brown chairs, brown flowers on the piano.
DeleteThe toys that they scatter all around the house are munticolored and so are the dozens of framed snapshots they coat the walls in.

DeleteI can't stand brown leather sofas, or worse, brown "pleather" sofas. They look crumpled and frumpy in no time, like a worn pair of shoes. And if you have pets, forget it. One claw in the leather and it's game over.

First I’d like to say I don’t mean this in a rude way but I know that can get lost over text, but how does the size of their house effect whatever house size you are looking for?
DeleteIt has the master bedroom and 3 more small bedrooms. No family room or communal space other than the living room. No dining room. A bare bones starter house.
DeleteSweet Lawd! Wish them well or say nothing. I am impressed by their tenacity. It appears they truly TRY. That, in and of itself, makes them better than the glass house dwellers ceaselessly throwing stones at them! And? There is such an animal known as an exposed ranch home which has a finished basement and access to the outdoors. I live in one.

DeleteThey originally came together due to their common goal to do missionary work. Buying a house here and law school seem to have ended what they thought their calling was.
ReplyDeleteThey went to the mission field and it didn't work out. It seemed they were unhappy there and obviously it wasn't their "calling" after all. They've moved on to something else.
DeleteDerick also was called to accounting and that yearlong ministry program they solicited donations for. He is called to do a lot!
DeleteBut they did say God called them to missionary work. God can call you but you get to decide when you want out? It is still posted on their website that they have a heart to to do mission work.
DeleteI guess I just don’t understand how you can know that God is “calling” you to do something or not. They seemed very sure of this calling to be missionaries until it was hard and a bit scary. I think many times people want to do something and claim it’s God’s will to justify going forward with their plan. God doesn’t send us a text or email letting us know what we should do.
DeleteInterest in being a missionary is one thing. Actually doing it was another as Jill and Derrick found out the hard way. I was left with the impression that when they discovered it wasn't a "glam" job, but was difficult and demanding they cut their stay short and went home. Anything they say about being missionaries is a "talking point" now.

DeleteWhite appliances have been around forever, and have outlasted pink, blue, avocado, gold, beige, black, stainless, and copper.
DeleteI once owned a black car. After that experience I would never have a black appliance. Black shows streaks, water spots and finger prints. If you want one, be ready for that. lol

ReplyDeleteCute house... though I don't understand the advantage of buying a totally new house while their family is literally famous for renovating old ones. They probably could get more land too if they got some old house and fixed it. This house does not seem to have a decent yard, or trees.
ReplyDeleteA lot of home buyers can only afford this type of house and yard and they like the safety of being in a cosy neighbourhood where most people are caring.
DeleteSome people have previously stated Jill and her siblings helped build the house her parents built. I think that Jill and Derek may have had siblings help build their house. For Jills own safety I hope she is not pregnant with another child since both previous preganancys haqve been dangerous for her. And that could be why Derek and her moved to this house.
ReplyDeleteThe house was built by the contractor who owned the lot & is building that subdivision. I don't know any contractor who would let unlicensed relatives of the buyers work on a house. The siblings didn't even help them move in - Cathy did.
DeleteExactly. No licensed contractor would let a buyer's relatives "help" build a house. Too many liability issues involved.

ReplyDeleteIt was nice of Jill to invite everyone on a walk through their new home! She has been a busy mom! I like the open living room kitchen space. I think Jill should get busy and hold garage sales!
