Derick Dillard, Israel Dillard, Jill Dillard, Samuel Dillard
Jill and Derick Dillard have just announced some exciting news! They have been living in a rental home but are about to move into a new home that they just built. The house has gone up quickly over the past several months. It's a ranch-style home with a brick front and siding back, located in a subdivision in Lowell, Arkansas, which is only about 20 minutes from Jim Bob and Michelle.

Wow! Congrats to them! I wish they would say how they could afford buying land and buying a house! I know Jill doesn’t work and Derrick is in school. My husband and I both work and we are nowhere close to having 10% to put down. How did they do it???
ReplyDeleteI think it’s from Jill’s money all the years she was on tlc
DeleteSave.
DeleteMore than likely savings from TLC
DeleteTheirs is the first style shown here. This company builds homes and finances them itself, including to people with low/bad credit. For their style, it's a cost of about $920/month. Only 1,400 square feet. They must have some money from Jim Bob to pay the down payment and several month's payments and the company is taking a chance on them (or maybe Cathy also co-signed).

8:11 PM -- Thanks for the info.
DeleteDid Derrick come into an inheritance? Going to law school and building a house takes a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteNone of your business!
DeleteThis is a fair question considering they were seeking donations a short time ago.
DeleteI'm not really a fan of Derrick, but I am happy to see him "cutting the cord" and making his own way in the world. Going to law school so he can earn a good living to support his family and moving some miles away from the family compound.
ReplyDeleteSomehow I doubt this move is true evidence of cutting any cords.
DeleteHe was already an accountant with a diploma. He was already able to support his family with that
Delete@2:04 He worked for one year as an accountant and then became a missionary and started asking for donations to support his family!
DeleteHe is in school, not working. Very likely cash from Jim Bob. Remember that Joe mentioned building a new house this year and Austin/Joy have been doing the same. It's probable Jim Bob has given them all cash to build a small/modest home, as this appears to be. This works fine for Jill's small family. I expect Jessa will also be building soon, but a bigger home as she will probably have many more kids.
DeleteVery excited for them; but how do you pay for it without any income(no TLC, no job)? Maybe, it’s a development JimBob is building and gifted them one of the lots.
ReplyDeleteYou don’t know anything about their income!!
DeleteI think the 4 oldest girls minus Jana had a huge lawsuit against the city so they probably got a huge pay out. Jinger is moving to LA which is an expensive place to live so it's probably lawsuit money. Because none of them have a job.
Delete@6:57 No payday. The lawsuit was dismissed.
Delete@6:57 I thought the girls' case was dismissed or was still being appealed. I don't think there's been any payout or that would have been in the local news. Josh did not prevail on his related suit. That was announced recently.
DeleteI don't think the lawsuit went in their favor.
DeleteAnon @ 6:57 As far as I know the case the girls have against the county is still ongoing so there would be no payout yet. Also there may never be a payout as no law was broken in releasing the information.
DeleteIt may not be any of my business, but my vrother's a contractor and I know what he charges and how many subs (subcontractors) he has to pay, as well as insurances and the cost of materials. I also have a pretty good grip on how much land costs as well, even if it's just a 1 acre plot. Sorry, but Jill & Derrick get no passes from me on this. Honesty? Integrity? I'd like to see a little here.
DeleteMary 5:47 do you know details about their income, or know them personally? There is nothing wrong with raising questions when things don't add up or make sense....they don't have to answer them.
Delete8:32, their honesty and integrity is on the line??? Assuming you don't know them personally, why does this matter to you? They are not accountable to you. They used to be on a TV show. Now they are not. They are not going around lecturing others on finances. They are not asking the public for donations. They are not running for public office. They are under no obligation to explain themselves.
DeleteNew house, new baby goes the old adage!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to them on their new home. I can see it now people making rude comments like how can they afford to build a house.
ReplyDeleteNo one is being RUDE,,Read what folks have to say about the Clan when People Magazine writes an Article! π€£
DeleteThe Duggars and Dillards have made it their testimony to give advice on financial strategies such as not incurring debt. It is only normal their fans would be curious, since they voluntarily have talked so much about finances themselves.
DeleteWhy is it rude? They are outspoken about their lives and lifestyle, asked for money for their “mission” in Central America, and claim to have received no money from the TLC shows. Banks don’t give mortgages to unemployed students and stay at home mothers.
DeleteNot rude. They claim to be frugal and have no debt. If that's so, Jim Bob clearly gave all the kids a large amount of cash and several are using it to build/buy homes. Joy/Austin, Joe is now building, Jessa will be soon, etc. Next up John/Abbie, although he alreay has a small house.
DeleteI wonder who actually built this house? It's good to see them striking out on their own. I hope some of the others follow suit.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new home and make lots of memories. I also live close to my mother and two married children. It' convenient if something comes up like babysitting and doctor appts.. God bless the Dillard family... Jane
ReplyDeleteHow great! Congrats to them!
ReplyDeleteI saw the pictures on their blog. I noticed that they used a construction company instead of asking some of the brothers or Austin, Who have house flipping businesses. I wonder why they didn’t just ask family for help.
ReplyDeleteSince none of the family are licensed contractors they couldn't make that work in the subdivision. Besides that if the family helped put the house together how would they be able to work at the family business?
DeleteAustin may be in the middle of a flip or 2 and just couldn’t do it right now.
DeleteBecause it’s in a community where all the homes are being built and sold by a developer.
DeleteThey want to be independent!!
DeleteCongratulations - relax and enjoy it with your family
ReplyDeleteGood for them. I think Derrick is rather arrogant but it's nice to see him making this move.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! New Easter, new beginnings. Miss 'counting on' with y'all! ❤
ReplyDeleteWow, that's amazing. Just a couple of years ago Jill and Derick were begging for donations. How can they afford to build a house with Derick in law school??
ReplyDeleteThe donations were not for personal use but for mission work! That's how missions work! Stop acting like they were asking for money for there personal use.
Delete@12:51 Derick spelled out exactly how much his family needed per month when he asked for donations. They had asked for money more than once. You can't say for sure that none of the donations went for personal use.
Delete12:15- Jill and Derick explicitly said on their GoFundMe page that the donations were for them to support themselves while they were on the mission field. It was for their personal use
Deletethat's how missions work!! People ask for help with expenses so they can be in the foreign country and work for the charity as missionaries. The mission organizations often don't pay anything or help with living expenses and expect the missionaries to raise money to live on and get extra for the mission outreach as well. I guess you wanted them to go broke by working as missionaries and spend all of their savings while not getting paid. Although that would be amazing but they weren't using the money to live in the lap of luxury. Just to live on while serving the lord. You may not like missionaries but what they did was normal.
DeleteBefore you judge them, just imagine yourself having some savings from work and then deciding to take a year or two to do charity work. Most of you who complain about the donations probably wouldn't make that kind of sacrifice unless the organization at least paid for your living expenses. Think about it. Their organization expected the to pay their own way to help them!!! That's the way most of the mission organizations work and those who do it are not asking for donations to get rich but to sustain themselves while serving.
DeleteCongratulations Derick & Jill!! That’s lovely you could build. (Would be neat to see at least the outside of it π)
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for you! Congratulations on your new home, and I hope you will share some pictures.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for this family! I really wish they were still on Counting On!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear an update on the Dillard's. Miss seeing them on Counting On.
ReplyDeleteThey were able to get a ranch house slapped together in a matter of months? Boy, there must not be any demand for contractors in that part of the country. Where I am, you'd wait a year or more for your house from agreement to build til you get the key, and that's being optimistic. A neighbor's remodel took a year because there were just too many other demands for contractors and subs.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I was wondering about that too. There were so many delays on MY house. Weather, inspections, people not showing up as scheduled, etc. etc.
DeleteIt doesn't look like a very populated area, so that makes sense.
DeleteI saw on their website they built a timber framed home probably prefabricated and just needed to be assembled on site, that's why they just took a few months, when I have enough money thats the kind of house I'm going to build as I dont have the patience to wait years,I've already been informed a prefabricated house of a single storey can be ready to move into in a space of three to four months.
DeleteMaybe they did most of the work!
DeleteI have never heard of having to wait that long. In Tennessee and Florida, we had houses built in six months or less from time we signed the contracts.
Delete@5:56PM You can build year-round in FL without winter delays. You can't do that in other parts of the country. Maybe in Tennessee, there were a lot of contractors lined up waiting for work. Other places, contractors have more work than they can handle and a long waiting list. Add in the inevitable delays and no-shows and it certainly can take much longer than 6 months to finish a house.
DeleteWhen we had a house built, they broke ground in April and we moved into our house in August.
DeleteI understand it can take longer up north due to weather conditions. Arkansas is west of us, so their winters are probably not bad. We have new houses in our subdivision being built right now. These are minimum two story 2500 square foot houses, and they are built in around four months. Jill’s house doesn’t look very large, so it wouldn’t take a long time to build. There are a lot of houses in our city being built right now. It is one of the fastest growing cities, and they still manage to find enough workers.
DeleteWinter delays? Written by someone who never lived in a northern climate. I live "way north" of Arkansas and we build 12 months in a year. even in the depths of winter. Construction only stops when it gets colder than -30/-40,not including windshield or during heavy snow storms. Given Arkansas's mild winters, I seriously doubt that winter would stop construction.
Delete@8:40AM If you don't get a foundation poured and a house framed up and roofed over before winter sets in, you don't build. Fresh concrete doesn't like temperatures below 40 degrees F. You can't even lay brick or block if it's too cold. I've never known a foundation to be poured in winter or construction to start then. You can work on the inside of a house in winter, but you have to do all the other stuff before then. My friend's father was masonry contractor "up north" and his off-season was November thru March, often with no work at all for several months in there.
Delete12:59- I live in a northern climate with severe winters. Houses have been going up at temperatures well below freezing all winter, including laying foundations. There are additives mixed with the concrete that I'm told allow it to cure properly. I wouldn't bet money that these homes are well built, but they are being sold and people live in them.
DeleteThis family with no one having a paying job can afford to go to law school, purchase a lot and pay someone to build a house for them. I wish I could be that blessed by God.
ReplyDeleteI, too, would like a better financial situation here on earth. It seems like not having enough money makes everything harder. But if we repent and follow Jesus, we'll be blessed beyond measure in eternal life.
DeleteMaybe buy a lottery ticket. Jimbob won the TV lottery a decade ago and it’s still paying off.
DeleteThey wrre payed by tlc on counting on and before that 19 kids, probably simce Jill was 18 so they could have quite large savings and thats what they are using to live on and pay for law school,I don't know how much tlc payed the family but it must have been good money if Jim Bob was able to keep on investing in more property.
DeleteI think they must be thinking of adopting.
ReplyDeleteWhyππ€¨ maybe they’re happy with two boys only.
DeleteHow do you come to that conclusion? I hope no more kids because there won't be room in this small house which looks to be a 3BR only.
Delete@10:31 I would love for you to have to explain your comment to literally every other country’s citizens, who regularly raise much larger families than two children in much smaller homes.
DeleteI'm wondering what Derick is doing for a living now and if they are still involved in missionary work.
ReplyDeleteHe’s in law school and no!!
DeleteHow do you know that he isn’t working while going to school? A lot of people manage to work and go to college.
DeleteCongratulations to the Dillards!
ReplyDeleteBeing 20 minutes from JB and Michelle is a LOT better than living next door, IMO.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to the Dillards, what a lovely home! Wishing them a lifetime of blessed & wonderful memories in their new house !
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Sydney Australia!
GOD BLESS them!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!! May God continue to bless this family.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to them. Many people can't afford a house let alone one custom built. It's amazing how they can do this somehow while being a student and a SAH mother.
ReplyDeleteGod takes care of his childrenπ⭐️⭐️
DeleteMary- So, God "takes care" of some people and ignores the rest? How do you identify His children, anyway? There are plenty of wealthy people in Hollywood and politicians in Washington, livng in the lap of luxury. Do they belong to the club? What about the countless children suffering from neglect and abuse and what did they do to be excluded? Love, logic and compassion doesn't appear to be a part of the equation if God is supposedly taking care of his children.
DeleteI'm God's child too, but I had to work 2 jobs while raising 5 kids after their dad walked out and was a deadbeat. Does God have favorites 5:40?
DeleteMary B.- Saying the God takes care of his children was a rather patronizing platitude I heard growing up. I didn't believe it then and I still don't. Way too many rotten things happen to good people, and too often good stuff happens to the rotten people.
DeleteMary didn’t say that God removes all problems from his children. He does take care of His children. God gave you the ability to work two jobs to take care of your children after their dad walked out. He gives us the very air that we breath to keep us alive. God gives people a free will which means there are evil people. Evil people have an affect even on those who don’t go down that path. God will one day wipe away all tears, take away all pain, and give us new bodies. Until then, God sends rain on the just and unjust. He loves mankind and wants them to come to Him. He doesn’t remove all of our problems, but He helps us carry them.
DeleteGod takes care of those who help themselves. Just asking when people asked for their donations back did they get them? I'm just asking.
DeleteAnon 4:10. Telling someone who had to deal with life's inequities that "God gave her the strength to work two jobs" is extremely patronizing. No one want to have to spend that much time working to support their family and be exhausted 24/7. Stop making excuses for God in that manner. Thank you.
DeleteThere is a popular opinion that being rich in Hollywood and a powerful politician is going to make you happy and content. I would take health and love over money and living in Hollyweird anyday! Have you seen those people and their morals...no morals? Look at how many filthy rich, mighty rich and powerful celebrities are still not satisfied with their lives! Money and lap of luxury is not everything! Actually, it can be very harmful.
DeleteNot that it's any of my business, but how do they afford this with Derrick in school and Jill not working? We must be doing something wrong.
ReplyDeleteWho knows? I had to work my way through college and then save for years to be able to buy a house. Maybe they have a "money tree".
DeleteWell is Derek still gonna go to law school? isn't that kind of far away from his school?
ReplyDeleteMy my myπ₯΄ aren’t you nosey π€₯
DeleteIt's a shame the comments are getting snarkier, the farther down the page we go. Some civil conversation would certainly be a welcome relief.
DeleteMy my my aren't you rude!
DeleteGood for Derrick and Jill! congrats on your new home~
ReplyDeleteSo happy for you..You are a beautiful and sweet family.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new home. May you grow many memories there.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Jill and Derek I can't wait to see the new pictures of your gorgeous ranch style house I love ranch style homes can't wait to see it god bless you
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new home. Love your family and show and y'all. God bless you all
ReplyDeleteCongratulations derick and jill on your brand new house and god bless you both
ReplyDeleteGood for them!
ReplyDeletewhat a cute house!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Jill and Derick!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful! So happy for you all! Miss seeing you guys on the show. Love the new pic! Your boys are so cute and have gotten so big! Enjoy your new home!
ReplyDeleteI might as well post this question, because everyone is asking. How are they PAYING for a house when neither of these two people are employed? They have no new money coming in each month to qualify for a mortgage. They either paid CASH for the construction of this house OR someone gave them the cash money. The silence from this family on things they purposely post, then don't address the 'whys and how's are astounding. How did the Dillards pay for this house?
ReplyDeleteNo one’s business. If you are paying their bills, you may be on the need to know list. I doubt you are. Because you and others watch their show or keep up with them on this blog, does not give you the right to ask questions about their finances. They’ve accomplished a big thing. Happy for the Dillard family.
DeleteI doubt that any of the Duggars, or the Dillards, are going to reveal their financial status or how they pay for things. Obviously they have money. The end.
DeleteIt's called saving. I'm sure being on the show paid quite a bit, plus Derrick had a job before meeting Jill. I have never seen so many people so obsessed with how a complete stranger uses their money until I read all the comments here. People act so surprised and shocked whenever they spend money. True, an ordinary family could never come up with money for a house as a stay at home mom and student, but they're not an ordinary family, they've been on TV. It's truly not that complicated.
DeleteThey don't post the whys and donts because its none of our business but since we choose to make it our business think about it people keep saying how they are taking advantage of tlc keeping the show as long as possible so can earn as much as possible, but all tlc employees are doing that,at least this family is using their money sensibly to invest in their family's future, they have been saving the money they earned all those years on the show so they can have a stable life with no money worries and invest in their future,I'm sure the money they've saved won't last much longrr but tey have made calculations that it will last until Derek becomes a lawyer.
DeleteIt’s none of your Business!!!
DeleteWhy is this your business?
DeleteWow, none of our business! Really, not one single reason we need to know. How they live their lives does not affect my life one bit.
DeleteExactly! Jim Bob especially believes in zero debt, not even a mortgage, so it would have to be CASH. And those houses in Powell are around $200K! Perhaps Jill and Derick are creating their own rules, and have debt (a mortgage). But with no income, how is that even possible.
DeletePerhaps it is a gift from Pops!
DeleteThey are truly blessed monetarily! I think we all would like to know the secret to their financial stability. They had to have money saved in some kind of trust from Jill's days on tv, but if it's a gift, I would be shouting from the rooftops praising the Lord. His blessings are nothing to keep quiet about!
Delete8:31, that is no $200,00o house. It is very tiny and simple. It looks like a builder developed a sub division and they bought one of the houses.
DeleteI agree a quick Google search for Lowell Arkansas real estate show similar looking homes for $180-200 000. But we don't really know what Derrick had saved from his accounting job. We don't know what his mom contributed. We don't know what Jill has earned from TLC. If public figures show a home, it would be nice for the fans to understand the finances but clearly they are not going to tell us in this case. Just as they chose to not explain the circumstances of Samuel's birth.
Delete8.31 I thought exactly the same. This house looks like a very modest construction to me too. There is no way a property like that cost $200.000. Iv just watched an American tv show about lottery winners & very fancy houses, & the couples in question were being shown homes for the value of €350.000-€400.000. I was amazed at the beautiful properties they were shown, some of which had moorings for a boat & 5 bedrooms & 4 bathrooms, plus stunning outdoor gardens & patios. I thought wow . . . I wish I lived in America as property is amazing value. I paid £300.000 (almost €400.000 dollars) for my very modest 3 bedroom semi with 2 bathrooms & a medium size garden 11 years ago. The home the Dillard’s are living in looks like it cost a lot less than €200.000. I do understand people wondering where they get money to buy property while Derick is a student & Jill doesn’t work & i’m sure their reality tv show couldn’t possibly have paid that much when it was split between a family of 21 people. However I have said it before & il say it again, it’s nothing to do with anyone & I wouldn’t want to have to explain my financial situation to anyone so why should they. However I know my son & his girlfriend who have both just graduated as a doctors, could not afford to buy a home together for another few years till they save more money, & both of them have money from small inheritance payments & still can’t buy a home for a few years (or afford a wedding). So perhaps it’s not just inquisitiveness that make people want answers but more that they are genuinely interested as how this family can do these things & want tips on being able to achieve a similar lifestyle.
Delete9:52 where i live that would be way more than 200,000
Delete9:52 AM: It is indeed a $200,000 house. Check out realtor.com for Lowell, AR. The builder has a brand new build listed on there, @ 312 Woodland St, in Lowell, for $204,882.00, and it is the same builder as Jill and Derick's home, and it looks exactly like their home.
DeleteAnon 9:52. It's a three bedroom house in a nice subdivision. In that area it would run $150K to $200K. Praising the Lord for blessing is all well and good but you do have to wonder how an unemployed couple got this particular blessing.
DeleteSounds like they're putting down roots! I wonder what will happen after he's done with law school.
ReplyDeleteGood for them. I like that they are branching out on their own, close enough to family but far enough away to have some space. I am glad for them also that they are off the show and somewhat out of the public eye. I don't think its healthy to have a film crew following your every move, especially for the children. They need to lead a normal life.
ReplyDeleteI am so confused by the Dillards' testimony. I remember before Jill and Derick were married, they were in a premarital counseling session with her parents, naturally, and Derick vowed to Jim Bob that he would never incur debt, even to purchase a used vehicle. I have always understood strategic, low-interest debt in certain cases to be a valuable financial tool, so it is interesting to me to see a family take such a strong stance against debt of any kind. I do not comprehend how Derick would be attending a graduate school program with a non-working spouse and two children at home, and now seemingly buying a new house without utilizing a student loan or mortgage. Especially since we know he only had a year or so in the workforce which would not have been adequate time to amass the hundreds of thousands of dollars of savings needed to fund his years in school and a cash-purchased home. He previously asserted that he and Jill were never paid for her family's television show, so it is clear they do not have money in the bank from that. I think many others join me in being confused by their debt-averse testimony and then secrecy about how they are making ends meet with Derick out of work for so many years. It would be very interesting to understand how they are pulling it off. It could be beneficial to many of their fans to know the secret.
ReplyDeleteI know. I don't understand it either. Even if they were using "savings" to finance law school, why would they incur the expense of building a house at the SAME time? Also they asked for donations to support them while Derrick was in the missionary training program so where did all this money come from? These questions will never be answered.
Delete9:40- Perhaps Derick's dad had a substantial life insurance policy that paid out when he passed away. Maybe his mom put the money in a trust for her sons. Jill may have savings from her 19 Kids and Counting years. I would hope that JB put the proceeds from the show into a trust fund for all of his kids. She also may have money made from the sale of the books she and her sister wrote. It's a possibility that they haven't had to borrow money. Who knows? In any event, I doubt that any of the family will be providing you with the particulars about their financial situation.
DeleteI highly doubt it would be beneficial, since the answer would either be something most of us can't emulate (gift from a wealthy parent, for instance) or common-sense (investments, saving, holding jobs that they kept private).
Delete9:40 AM. It would not be beneficial to “fans”. It would only encourage “fans” to demand explanations of any and every decision they make. Even people who are in the public eye deserve consideration of their privacy. They have made a decision to have their own home. It is a happy time for them. Kindness from “fans” would go a long way.
DeleteTlc is the secret, they payed wellwhen they were on the show, how could he possibly get a mortgage without income
DeleteAMEN
DeleteI was thinking the same thing that it sure would help me and my family to know how to afford that. I wish they would share that secret!!!!!!!
DeleteIt does seem strange. Being on a reality show does not pay as much as people think. They would be paid one lump sum as a family, and the Duggars also had the expense of raising all those kids. Book sales? Doubt those made any substantial money. Authors get only pennies per book and the books were far from best sellers. Do not forget the expensive planes these people have bought and the numerous trips these people seem to take.
DeleteSo, yes, this does not add up. Here is a young couple, with no income plus one attending expensive law school.
What do you mean they were never paid it was called Jull and Jessa counting on and they only paid Jessa and all the other siblings that made an appearance?now that sounds silly, and Derek never said.
Delete12:56- The premise of the Duggars show has been to be a "testimony" about how an incredibly large Christian family manages to provide for and take care of so many kids. You could say that their motto has been, "Buy used and save the difference." They've willingly shared some of their financial philosophy with the TV audience. It stands to reason that people would like some clarification on how they finance some of their life
Deletechoices, when most others have to take out college loans or mortgages. I think what the Duggars want to avoid talking about is how much a TV show has contributed to their wealth. If they didn't want their privacy invaded regarding this topic, they should never have made this particular "testimony" a focus to begin with.
10:27, Jill and Derick are not her parents. It's their chance to run their family and finances in the way they choose. They're not on the show anymore. Stop confusing this generation with the last one.
DeleteDear Jill and Derick, my parents and I would love to see Israel, Samuel and you and also your new house on counting on. We would really love to see all of your family officially back on counting on starting the season 11. Natasha B
ReplyDeleteOooo can't wait for pictures! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to them but the house and lot don't look very big for an expanding family maybe 3 bedroom 2 baths. mho
ReplyDeleteI think someones finances are private matter. In my country, Young People save for years, than get married and are able to buy a home. Or they are given the money by their parents or they inherit something... they dont share every little detail with the world and social media and I respect them for that. It is their intimacy
ReplyDeleteMost people don't put themselves on TV and share with the world how they managed to support such a huge family. The Duggars were more than open about it when the cameras first started rolling. It was the whole premise of the show. So to say that now, it's an invasion of their privacy to ask questions about how they afford certain things, is like closing the barn door after the cows get out.
DeleteAnon 10:32. Well said. They were struggling to make ends meet, now they don't want to disclose anything and there are fans that buy into it.
DeleteObviously they have made money from the show. They don’t need to come out and state that. They also invest into properties and fix them up and rent them out. They buy and sell cars, etc. Hard work and savings and no debt is how they have the freedom to do more now.
DeleteCongratulations on your lovely home. Such a wonderful milestone in life. You are a beautiful couple with a beautiful family. I wish you the best and expect only the best for you. I cannot believe some of the silly comments and questions about how this lovely family can afford their home. There are innumerable ways this could happen and it is none of anyone's business. I could not care less. I am just happy for them. Just because they are in the public eye, they owe no one an explanation of their financial situation. Good grief. I am sad that a fan site has so many commenters who are so negative and are not fans.
ReplyDeleteThat's nice... All look well in the pic.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Wish you were on Counting on so we can see your updates and here from you.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that people genuinely believe they should be privy to people’s financial information. 1. It’s a modest builders grade house. They probably went through a contractor that has a series of cookie cutter floor plans and lots available to choose from. Where I live these houses are going up everywhere all the time. They aren’t ridiculously inexpensive (for a house) and the mortgage payment is cheaper than rent in most cases.
ReplyDelete2. Maybe they did have a relative help with the down payment. So what?
3. Being in the public eye does not mean you have to be forthcoming about money.
This family kept asking for donations to support them. People donated when they went to Central America and when Derrick was in that missionary training program. I think some accountability is in order. If they had all this money why were they asking people to pay for their lives?
DeleteIf they had money in the stock market, it may not have been worth anything years ago when they went to the mission field. Or maybe Derrick has an inheritance from his dad’s death that didn’t pay out until he was almost thirty. There are many ways they could have gotten the money recently. Since they didn’t ask anyone to donate to their house, then I wouldn’t worry about how and when they got the money.
DeleteIf they had money in the stock market, it would have been going gang busters when they were in the mission field. If they had it in the market in 2007, it would have gone way down. But I seriously doubt that any Duggar invests in the stock market. That's akin to gambling. They buy tangible property with their money - planes, houses, land, etc.
DeleteRegarding the comments about how the Dillards can afford a new home while Derick is in law school: I think it's entirely possible that some fundamentalist Christian organization may be financing his schooling. It stands to reason that they want more representation in the legal professsion to promote and support their conservative agenda. Maybe he has a contract with such a group to work for them once he graduates. The end game may even be politics. I don't think the Duggars or Derick are stupid people. They know how to work the system as well as anyone. As far as financing the house, Jill may have money from the 19 Kids and Counting years. JB likely set up a trust for each of the kids. Considering reruns and deals with Amazon, ITunes, etc., the revenue would add up, along with their book sales. It is curious that at one time the Dillard's were asking for donations to their ministry.
ReplyDelete@5:11 Book sales will be minuscule. Reruns? What reruns? And the actors do NOT get paid for reruns. They are paid ONLY once.
Delete@ OP That's what doesn't ad up. If you have enough money for law school and a brand new house, why ask for donations too?
DeleteMy daughter worked as a background actor in NYC while she was in grad school. They only get paid for their appearance on a show. Period. Unless you have a contract with residuals, you don't get paid for reruns. Any book sale money would have to be shared with the REST of the family. I'm not sure where this money to finance these activities came from but I doubt it was from the TV show or book sales or "deals" with Amazon".
DeleteActors get paid for reruns. Not as much as they did for the original show but as long as a show is in syndication they are getting a percentage. Did you not hear about the actor from The Cosby Show who had to get a job bussing tables to make up for the loss of the reruns being taken off the air?
DeleteThe deals with Amazon and iTunes would not include payments to the Duggars. TLC maintains exclusive rights to all the Duggar material from all their shows.
DeleteSyndication means that the original network is selling the rights of reruns to other stations. The Duggar shows are syndicated.
DeleteTLC is pretty generous to its stars with perks in addition to the money (10% of the receipts per episode) but since Jill is no longer on the show I don't see how she would be getting much income from TLC. Book sales wouldn't amount to more than pocket change as the book isn't selling that man copies now. There may be some residuals from reruns but again it would be rather small as it would have to be shared with the siblings. Most likely a payoff from JB for all those years Jill appeared on 19K&C and didn't get any of the money JB and Michelle were paid.
DeleteBecause they want to be independent duh
ReplyDeleteIs Duh a nice way to address people? In my opinion your comments have been rude, you commented more than ten times. Take a break.
DeleteCongratulations on your new home! I have a theory. They probably didn't get paid when they appeared on their parents show, but I think they did get paid for "Jill and Jessa Counting On". They probably sagely saved all the tens of thousands they got per episode. Plus, they were still being filmed while on missions.
ReplyDelete"10s of thousands"... Doubt that. Being on a reality show on TLC is not like being an actor in a money or top-grossing TV show. The "whole family" would be paid a lump sum and that amount would have to be divided between ALL participants.
DeleteIf they had all this money, why were they asking for donations when Derrick was in missionary training? No one should appeal for donations if they don't need the money. I'm sure they were paid to appear on Counting On, but the money would have been spent during the time they were on the show for their household expenses. It's not all that lucrative and I doubt they saved very much.
DeleteCable TV shows are pretty low budget. I doubt anyone was paid "tens of thousands" of dollars to appear on the. They would have to share whatever was paid per episode with everyone who appeared. Union scale for background actors is $150 per day, a bit part is $350 per day. Main actors (like the Duggars) would get more but it's unlikely they go more that $1,000 per appearance. So I think your theory doesn't hold water. I'm not sure where this nest egg came from but since they hadn't appeared on the show for a couple of years I don't believe it was from TLC.
Delete11:08- I don't think any of the Duggars want the public to know just how much they make on the show, because this is supposed to be some kind of ministry for them. If it was a paltry amount they earn as you suggest, they'd let that be known. They are opportunists, something learned from the patriarch of the family, and I really doubt they'd be allowing camera crews in their homes on a regular basis if they weren't being handsomely compensated.
DeleteTens of thousands per episode.....then why did they need donations to support them while they were on a mission?
DeleteAnon 10:51. Yes the Duggars are extremely secretive about how much money they got off the TV show. But since they weren't on primetime broadcast TV I don't think they could command 10's of thousands of dollars per appearance. Also this show isn't in reruns of syndication so the income from it wouldn't have continued after the dillards left the show. IMO the bulk of their money comes from speaking engagements and appearances at various events. Having TLC pay for stuff like weddings, honeymoons, trips, etc. doesn't put $$$ in their pocket but does keep their expenses down.
DeleteBig name TV stars like Tom Selleck make $200 K per episode for popular broadcast TV shows the rest don't. Jussie Smollett wa unhappy with his $20 K per episode. If you do some research you can find out what they make. It's no secret. However, the Duggars aren't big name stars and it's cable TV so they couldn't command huge sums of money. Maybe 10 K an episode max and the Dillards haven't been on the show for two years so they wouldn't have any more income from it.
DeleteAnon 10:51 People in the entertainment industry gossip constantly about who is paid what. It's common knowledge that TLC pays the Duggar family 10% of the receipts for the show. That works out to be roughly 30K per episode. If JB didn't want people to know what they made on the TV show, he didn't understand how the industry operates. I'd say $30K per show is hardly a "ministry".
DeleteIf their family grows much more they will need a bigger house. This only looks big enough to be a 3 bedroom. I wonder why such a small house. Perhaps they are done having children with just 2 children.
ReplyDeleteIt's 1470 sq. ft. with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The rooms must be small. There's no separate dining room. There's just a living room, no second family room area.
DeleteI have five children in a 3 bedroom house. It’s easy. Don’t worry about it. :)
DeleteWe have 7 people in a 3 bedroom.
DeleteThey could have a basement, or add on later or double up, or not decide to have that many kids. Who knows, I'm sure they will make it work, they have a strong foundation in faith and family support that so many many dont.π
DeleteAnon 10:45. They don't have a basement. You can't just add one after the house is built. I guess they could add on, but the lot appears rather small and subdivisions usually have restrictions on how much you can add on to a house in them.
DeleteThere's no basement in that house. It's on a slab.
DeleteAnon 10:45. You can't add a basement to a house that was built on a slab. Adding on is a possibility, but subdivisions often have restrictions on that sort of thing.
DeleteI find it astounding how materialistic we have become. A 3-bedroom home can easily accommodate a family of 6, and even much bigger. 90% of the world’s population lives in a fraction of the size of homes that North Americans feel is a must.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in 1170 sq. ft. with 3BR and 1BA for 4 people. I can tell you a house that small really impacted our social life. It was hard to have friends over or family visit. We were too crammed in. Thank goodness I had my own tiny bedroom because there was no other space in that house to be on your own. None of us were happy in that little place. We eventually moved to a bigger house, but I felt we had endured too many stressful years in the old house. When a family has room to spread out and entertain, it really makes a positive difference in their lives.
DeleteTHANK you, soul sista!!!!!!
DeleteThere is nothing wrong with wanting comfort form your hard earned money.
DeleteIf you want to live how people in other countries live, go ahead- you are free to choose that. Choose a tiny home if you like. It's not materialistic, however, to choose to live in a similar manner to others in your own country, city or neighborhood.
DeleteExactly. Jim Job and michelle lived in a 3bdr 1 bath home back when it was only 14 kids!! And nothing horrible happened with those types of living conditions. Nothing bad at all.
DeleteI agree. We tend to be a bit spoiled. Siblings can share rooms. It won't hurt them, and will teach them how to live alongside someone who may be very different from them. Good training for moving off to college and having roommates.
DeleteIn my state, if you crammed 14 kids into a 3 bdr home with that tiny square footage, Social Services would be taking your children.
DeleteActually plenty of horrible things happened in that set up. But Jill married five years after her mom. She isn’t going to have 19 in the next 10 years if at all. She could have 8 and be fine in that house. This sort of home should have been bought free and clear when the kids moved out since they should have been profiting off being on the show while kids. It’s nice they could own a home that has nothing to do with the in-laws.
DeleteAre you suggesting we should have big families and small houses? I grew up in an old 3 bedroom farmhouse with one tiny bathroom and there were 8 in our family. We also had no washer and dryer. We survived. However, would I want to live like that today? The answer is no. There was little privacy. I don't need a mansion, but I do want to be comfortable.
DeleteBuilders are building new homes on the bigger side these days. I'm surprised to see a brand new house that small, frankly.
Delete10:58- Nothing bad happened? You're forgetting about Josh.
DeleteIf you foster kids or adopt, you have to have a certain amount of space for each child because they come visit homes to see the environment the kid will be placed in. You cannot simply cram them in like sardines people
DeleteThe parents are the ones who spouted all the frugality and money saving things being brought up by posters on here. Not the kids. The kids may have a different style or whatever you want to call it. Circumstances aren't the same as in their childhoods now that they are married. Adjustments are made accordingly.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how much these posters are exactly following what they grew up doing? If we looked at the posters lives as critically as they look at the duggars would they want that? Would they want us to pick them apart and deride how they make decisions. I know I wouldn't. Look in your mirror and ask if it's kind, helpful, or judgemental. If someone said it to your face would you be able to listen and learn.
I think you are right that the children have an entirely different mindset than JB and Michelle. JB and Michelle were starving when they landed the TLC gig and have pursued every possible source of money to build their fortune. By all accounts their children aren't "builders" but are enjoying their prosperity and aren't such go-getters. In the end the grandchildren will be back where JB and Michelle started out. Unfortunately the Duggars do come off as a bit self righteous and some find that annoying.
DeleteThere's a saying "shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations". The Duggars will prove that to be true. Their wealth won't last past JB and Michelle's kids.
DeleteThey were starving? They didn't look particularly emaciated on the original TV special, and their Aldi's pantry wasn't exactly bare.
Delete5:47 4/22. I think she was being sarcastic!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! May you find lots of joy, peace and comfort inside the walls of your new home. I believe many of God’s children look forward to that special day that he opens the door of a new home just for that family like he has done for your family now. I hope some of your family can move close to you so your kids can grow up together.
ReplyDeleteHow does God choose who to bless with a new house?
DeleteSister: God is not in the business of rewarding people with houses as sign of his favor. I don't think it's a good idea to suggest that people can somehow "earn" a house by doing something to curry favor with God.
DeleteIs their another baby in the oven if so congrats to this family πΌπΊπΆπ»π
