Jackson Duggar's driving lesson

In case you missed the scene from last week's episode that featured Jackson's driving lesson, we have embedded the clip below. Jim Bob Duggar and a few of the Duggar brothers take him into town for a lesson with a local police officer.

A person learning to drive doesn't need to have several siblings in the vehicle during the lesson. The cop just wanted to be on TV or he wouldn't have allowed all the passengers during the "driving lesson".

ReplyDeleteIt's a small town that the Duggars have a lot of influence in. As for the vest, who knows? Maybe the Duggars had guns with them.
DeleteIt’s such a weird premise to set up for the sale of the show. Most people take a class or get lessons from a family member. The vest is completely confusing though. Maybe the police officer wanted to look cool for thecameras??

DeleteIt's part of the uniform for any cop these days, isn't it? I haven't seen a police man or woman or dog without Kevlar in years.
DeleteWow! Kinda of lax down there. Here, a young driver, with a learner's permit, is not allowed to drive around with a bunch of people in the back seat. Back seat drivers are a distraction and definitely NOT SAFE. There should be only one person giving the more driver instructions.
ReplyDeleteAnd a three point turn not important? Really? Here, student drivers practice that as well as parking, backing up and other maneuvers until they are perfect. Where are the experienced drivers telling him otherwise?
9:34, yes their laws regarding driving are very lax. It was legal in Texas to get a drivers license at 14 but that was changed to 16 in the 60’s. No 14 year old should be driving, especially with a bunch of backseat drivers.
DeleteThis would be illegal in Oregon. You are able to get a learners permit at 15 and limited to only the driver and instructir in the car. The first six months you have your license no one under age 18 may ride with you. Penalties for breaking the rules are pretty stiff up to and including suspension of your drivers license until age 18.....Kinda hard to believe this wasn't just staged for the cameras. In my opiniom very irresponsible of Jim Bob.
DeleteJackson said he had driven on their farm several times, so this wasn’t his first time driving at all. No one was screaming or being rowdy to cause distractions in the back seat. Large families are used to a lot of siblings around. It is just normal.
DeleteThree point turns are not that important in normal driving. Most of the time there are places to turn around if necessary without doing a three point turn.
My cousins live in Georgia on farms. They start driving tractors and equipment at young ages. By the time they are driving cars, they are already pretty good drivers.
Anon 6:15. Driving on a farm or other private property is a good deal different than driving on public roads and in populated towns where there are other cars and traffic signs, signals and pedestrians. It's much more complicated than simply knowing how to make the car go where you want it to go. It takes a good deal of practice to drive well when you're dealing with other cars, etc.
DeleteI recently read a study that looked into the accident and death rate in Arkansas based on age. Those young people whose parents allowed them to start driving at 14/15 and a much higher accident and death rate, even years after.
DeleteI learned to drive at 10, got my permit at 15, license at 16 and now I’m middle aged. I’m not dead yet, learning to drive is different in the country, there are way less distractions

ReplyDeleteWhy on Earth did the cop allow all those passengers in the car during the driving lesson? In my state, someone learning to drive isn't allowed to have passengers in the car, just the student and their instructor. Of course you have to be 16 to get a learner's permit and 17 to get your license. Letting 14 year olds drive seems strange to me.
ReplyDeleteSome states it’s 15 to get a permit and 16 for a license, that’s what it was for me, every state is different, I got my license and a brand new car on my 16th birthday, don’t say that u have to be 17 age for license, it varies by state
DeleteMy question is why there was a bunch of people in the vehicle with Jackson. There should have been one person with him whether it was the father or another qualified driver. I realize that they were going to have a police officer doing an assessment of his driving. With that many people in the vehicle is a chance for disaster like a real bad accident. I don't think the father was using his brains when he had so other people in the vehicle. I believe in most states with a learning driver, there is to be only other person in the vehicle. I am happy to see that he is wanting to learn but that was ridiculous with so many people with him.

DeleteI can't believe that they liked all those people in the van while this boy was taking a driver's lesson with the Police. Why on earth would they expect this tiny young man to take his driving lessons in an oversized van while sitting on a pillow. Good grief

DeleteHe is the grandson of Michelle's older sister. The older sister had custody of him until she had a stroke. The Duggars took legal custody of him then. They did not adopt him. Tyler's mother had some trouble with the law, which has been resolved. Why Tyler remains at the Duggar house and is not back with his mother has not been explained.

DeleteIt was o nice to see Jackson,Justin and James, my have they grown up...and so handsome. I just realized that all the boys but Jackson and Justin have biblical names and none of the girls do.I wish the seasons were longer😊
ReplyDeleteThat's right, they finished up the J names from the Bible, but their middle names Levi and Samuel are Bible names, I reckon Lauren and Josiah will use the same initials for their children as Lauren's parents did that with their children too like the Duggar.

ReplyDeleteA 14 year old too short to see over the dash driving a big van filled with commenting brothers and father with a police officer riding shot gun is just rediculous. Give this boy a couple of years to grow and mature prior to sending him out in traffic, thank you!

DeleteReally short people usually have their cars permanently adjusted for their needs. Years ago, my father's secretary was a little person. Her car was adjusted for her (pedals raised, seat raised) and she drove just fine.
DeleteBut I agree, that boy is too small to be driving that vehicle. Sitting on a pillow is not a safe or smart solution.
6:17 I think your response was a bit of a stretch to try and justify a short young man learning to drive and having to learn in a huge van with a police instructor along with his Dad and brothers tagging along. The poor kid had to sit on a pillow to drive which in most states you would not be allowed to do and also would never be allowed to have a load of family members in the car.

DeleteI sure wouldn't want a cop, my dad, half my family in the car and a film crew with me when I went for my lesson - lol. Talk about pressure.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, I agree. Having my dad, not the most patient person, was bad enough. There was a day when I was trying to learn stick shift that I will never forget!!
DeleteSo sorry to be negative, but this was obviously staged so Jim Bob and the brothers could be filmed. Kind of an oops, in my opinion. Jackson is cute as ever though.

DeleteWhere I live, if you called the cops to say that your 14 year old with a learner's permit wanted to be filmed driving the family around with a uniformed cop in the front seat, they'd hang up on you.
Deleteso many things wrong w/ this clip.....the police officer seemed completely uninterested, it's so unfair to be driving a big vehicle like that to start out with and why are there so many people with them? It seems the parents should be giving the lessons! I felt so sorry for Jackson

ReplyDeleteGood question. I think Jim Bob should have let the poor kid drive with just the instructor in a car instead of that huge vehicle. There is no reason that he had to drive along with his son and have the other boys tag along too, other then wanting to get airtime. There were so many things wrong with this.
DeleteJackson didn't stop at the stop sign. Jackson will be 15 in May.

DeleteAll police offices were bulletproof vest know. Here were I live kids are not allowed to driving when they are that small they have to be 5.6 and talker.

DeleteOdd that an on duty policeman is giving a driving lesson - dont you have driving instructors in the US. Here in UK you can’t drive until you’re 17yrs when can see over the steering wheel! I’m glad my nearly 14yr daughter won’t be driving anytime yet!

DeleteOh, goodness! So many being so negative! Jackson seemed just fine with all of those in the van with him. He even commented positively about it. He did just fine!

DeleteI find it disquieting That JB can arrange for a driving lesson for Jackson from an on duty police officer in his hometown. I wonder what other "favors" he's been granted.
