'Jinger's Double Surprise' Recap

Counting On "Jinger's Double Surprise"

  • Jinger is 25 weeks pregnant, and she and Jeremy are setting up for a gender reveal party. It’s an obstacle course, and two teams will compete to make it to the light-up “Baby” sign first. The winning team will pull the cord on the sign to reveal the gender.
  • “My siblings, I think, have used nearly all the traditional baby gender reveal ideas, and so Jeremy and I have had to brainstorm to come up with something that’s unique,” says Jinger.
  • “We want fun, but we kind of want fun mixed with embarrassment,” adds Jeremy.
  • The Duggar family (minus Joe and Kendra and the Forsyths), Grandma Duggar, and Aunt Deanna, arrive in Laredo, as do Jeremy’s parents. Jim Bob is the captain of Team Pink, and Chuck Vuolo is the captain of Team Blue.
  • The obstacle course includes hula-hooping, “dizzy spinning” around a bat, hopping, a child-sized tunnel, and an ice cream eating competition. The ice cream part proves to be the most difficult for some, as they try to push through brain freezes. “I think I was eating the ice cream a little slow for Jessa’s liking,” admits Ben, who says he is “not super competitive.”
  • Jessa, on the other hand, is very fast. “It’s not really an amazing thing to be known for, but I can put away the food when there’s a time crunch,” she says.
  • Some of the older folks, like Jeremy’s dad, go through the tunnel, while others, like Jim Bob, opt to have a child go through on their behalf.
  • The pink team wins, so Jim Bob and Michelle get to pull the string to light up the sign. When it turns pink, everyone screams. Jinger and Jeremy spray pink silly string at the guests. “We’re more than ready to be grandparents for the first time,” says Chuck.
  • “I really thought it was going to be a girl,” says Jim Bob. “Anyway, I am just so pleasantly surprised, Michelle, and I’m so thankful for this little granddaughter.”
  • The following day, a friend in Laredo throws a surprise, co-ed baby shower for Jinger and Jeremy. Jana and Jessa tell Jinger that they want to take her shopping for baby clothes. While they are shopping, the friend calls to ask Jinger and Jeremy if they would come over to look at a crib that she has for them. When they pull into the driveway and Jinger sees a taco truck and pink decorations, she realizes that something is going on.
  • “Jinger is very easy to surprise,” says Jessa. “She just kind of goes with the flow. It’s just easy to pull things over on her. She just doesn’t catch on very easily.”
  • The house and yard are FILLED with pink decorations and treats. Chuck shares a short message, and Jim Bob leads a prayer. When it comes time to open gifts, the Vuolos are blown away at how many there are. They are very grateful for everything their friends and family have done for them.
  • “It is just amazing to get to be there with Jinger and Jeremy before the baby arrives, just having a peaceful time there,” says Jedidiah. “I think it just makes it special.”
  • In Arkansas, Kendra’s parents help Joe and Kendra prepare for the birth. Kendra is 36 weeks pregnant, and her mom is 12 weeks along with her eighth child. “It’s super neat to be expecting at the same time,” says Christina Caldwell. “But Kendra got married young, and so we were hoping that we could still have another baby or two, but at the same time, we’re content, so we’re excited.”
  • When Christina was pregnant with her first (Kendra), a car accident at 36 weeks caused her labor to begin. For the next three weeks, her labor was on and off leading up to Kendra’s arrival.
  • Paul and Joseph install the car seat and pump up the labor ball, while the ladies make a baby book and pack the hospital bag. After checking those items off the to-do list, Joe and Kendra say they feel ready for Garrett's arrival.
  • On another day, Joe and Kendra do a time test to see how long it takes them to grab their things and drive to the hospital. Kendra is hoping for an all-natural birth.
  • Joe makes sure to take plenty of snacks. “Joseph, when he gets nervous, he stress eats,” says Josiah. “I’ve seen this condition because actually I experience the same thing.” The entire process takes only 28 minutes during rush hour.

  1. Such a nice episode. nice she got a 2nd party

  2. I think it would’ve been more fun if Jinger and Jeremy didn’t know the sex before hand and they got to find out along with the family. Finding out before hand and then making this huge elaborate thing to tell the rest is just weird

    1. I AGREE.
Appeared that others knew before the gender reveal OR how could they plan and decorate for the baby shower.

    2. Did Jill & Derick and boys attend either the gender reveal and/or the shower (obvisouly off camera) - it is sad if they are not included because of a TV show.
I noticed Anna and her children, did not see Israel as we did at Joe & Kendra's gender reveal.
Please let the fans know. THANKS

    3. 12:59, not really your business is it? That’s being said Derick had a job at this point in time, and probably couldn’t take off just to come to a gender reveal party.

    4. I'm sure the couple who hosted the baby shower (who did NOT come to the gender reveal party) were told in advance that the baby was a girl so they could buy the correct decorations. That doesn't mean all the Duggars and Vuolos attending the gender reveal party knew as well.

    5. 12:57, they probably told friends who lived near them before family. Alyssa Bates did too, it’s no big deal.

  3. Those are not very nice "sisterly" things that Jessa called Jinger.

  4. I loved the way the gender reveal party was thrown. I like the way Jim Bob found out he was having his 3rd granddaughter. Anna looked nice. Natasha B

  5. Did anyone notice the crucifix over the doorway where the shower was held? I wonder why they have a CATHOLIC symbol like that, yet attend Jeremy's church?

    1. A crucifix does not signify Catholicisim.

    2. The couple may very well have converted from being Catholic to being evangelical / Protestant. But I'm sure they still have Catholic friends and family, and may not wish to offend them by taking the crucifix down.

And AFAIK, while evangelicals prefer to focus on the resurrected Jesus, there's nothing about the crucifix itself that is theologically "wrong" from an evangelical point of view, the way keeping statues of Mary and the saints would be. I've seen a lot of non-catholic artwork featuring the Passion.

    3. anon@12:11- I find it incredibly bizarre that so many religions focus on what's theologically "wrong" with other churches and denominations and have the audacity to think their doctrine is the only one based on truth. Could very well be that they all have it wrong on many levels.

    4. This is one of my main thoughts.....God is one and there are so many churches that won't recognize the other. Why can't any church person have a crucifix in their home. Blood on the doorway goes back to the passover in Egypt. That was a foreshadow of Jesus who was to die once for all. So it makes perfect sense for anyone accepting Jesus as their saviour to put a symbol of him on the doorway. And He said I am the door no one goes to the Father in Heaven their creator but by Jesus. This is not a Catholic idea only, it is Judao Christian. I think Jesus crosses into all churches beyond the ideas of people about stuff like this.

    5. The cross is for everyone and each person chooses to accept it or not. The crucifix is just a symbol of that.

    6. It was likely a wedding gift and since Jeremy is a pastor he can appreciate any and all Christian symbols meant to represent Christ.

    7. I know quite a few nonCatholic families who have crucifixes in their homes, no big deal

    8. Catholics typically use a crucifix (Jesus hanging on a cross) vs. an empty cross, which is what Protestants use.

    9. If they are Catholic, they sure are going to the wrong church.

  6. Why did Kendra bring two huge pillows with her during the practice hospital run?

  7. This episode was quite confusing. TLC tried too hard to stick a number of events in to one show. Two hours was also too long.

Question: How could the Vuolos' friends put together that baby shower with all that pink over night? Jinger & Jeremy revealed the sex of the baby 'the day before' at that child-like backyard birthday party. Not real IMO. TLC paid for a nice party if you ask me. So, what did Jinger's parents get her for a shower gift? We saw that nice BRAND NEW stroller that Jeremy's parents gave them, but no mention of what Michelle gave.

    1. Jinger and Jeremy knew the sex already since we saw that last week. Jeremy mentioned that he had called the woman that had previously offered to do the shower when the Duggars mentioned the idea of a surprise shower for Jinger, so he most likely told her it was a girl then. It’s not rocket science

    2. Maybe Jeremy told the hostess so she could plan the party. The reveal was just for their families.

    3. My understanding was that Jeremy, his parents, and the Duggars coordinated with the friends to put on the baby shower. The party logistics could have been done weeks in advance since travel arrangements were pre-planned. Jeremy would have had to tell them what the sex of the baby was before their families, but that happens in "real life" when couples ask one or two close friends to help them set up a surprise reveal or baby announcement. TLC may have paid for the party or they have wonderfully generous friends. It may even be that the friends used TLC money to pay for food and decorations while having actually planned the party. It was beautiful and Jinger really seemed to appreciate it.

  8. I find it odd and disturbing that they intentionally want to embarrass people and equate doing so as fun. That is hurtful, hateful, and a form of bullying. I really like this couple, but this idea was not a good or kind one, and seems out of character for them and not good Christian behavior in general.

    1. I agree, it was off putting that they tried to make an obstacle course that would embarrass their guests rather than make one that they thought would be the most fun. They did seem regretful about the ice cream at least.

    2. It is called stepping outside of your comfort zone. If we never do it, we'll eventually get so stiff that our faces crack if we smile. And for a gender reveal party what a comfort to the pregnant mom to see people stepping out of their comfort zones. Take a picture perfect young woman and give her a huge belly, puffy cheeks and general weight gain, dizzying morning sickness, and hoops to jump for the next years of life and expect her to take it all with singularity in her stride? Jinger probably loved every minute of these peoples challenges at the party! If anyone did not want to participate I think they have all learned about the little word no.

    3. Oh lighten up. Everyone had fun and enjoyed the party!

    4. 7:52--- I completely agree! Who invites guest over to make them do stupid things and intentionally embarrass them for the host's entertainment?? And what guest would put up with that? If I were invited to a party and the host expected me to perform at the cost of me being demeaned I would definitely leave. Who treats their friends and loved ones like that?

  9. Oh my goodness, Joe and Kendra are so cute together!!!
