In addition to being president of The Master's University and Seminary, John MacArthur is also the pastor at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California. Coincidentally, Jeremy's church in Laredo, Texas, is also called Grace Community.
As you can see in the photo above, one of the many perks of online classes is being able to cuddle your newborn while listening to lectures.

Oh, I've taken online classes, good luck Jeremy! Also, I hate to be that person, but it is really not good for an infant to be so close to a screen, it is not good for her eyes.

Is there some sort of mother’s club that holds meetings about how to effectively troll other people about their parenting skills?! Sheesh! ... So what if he has her too close to the screen?! 11:24 yes doctors have said and continue to advise parents to limit or even restrict screen time for infants. That said, I’m sure Felicity didn’t spend hours looking at the computer with her dad.

ReplyDeleteI wish Jeremy were going to some school other than John MacArthur's. I have a hard time reconciling what the Bible teaches about salvation being free, with Pastor MacArthur's belief that evidences of salvation are necessary, and also that you have to persevere to be saved. Wouldn't that be works when Romans 11:6 says that if it is by works, then faith isn't faith, and vice versa? Don't get me wrong... I am in no way advocating not living a holy life, but our holiness, while being the way we ought to live, can never measure up to God's standard of perfection, so it would follow that depending on persevering or evidences for SALVATION, cannot get us to heaven, which, if I'm not mistaken, is what MacArthur teaches? Please, Jeremy, consider this as you continue to prepare for and advance in ministry.
ReplyDeleteIt is by ones fruits that one's salvation is evident to others. Without fruits of salvation it is to be questioned if one's salvation is genuine or merely a 'prayer to get one to heaven rather than hell'. The fruits and the salvation go perfectly hand in hand. One once saved begins to act as a child of God choosing to please him rather than pleasing self or the world!
DeleteThere are many of us devout Christians who believe that the murderers and thieves and people who do all kinds of evil things will not just suddenly appear in heaven. They have to WANT to be in heaven which means they have to WANT to be good which means they have to DEMONSTRATE a good life. That is the belief of millions of Christians around the world. It is ok if you have different beliefs and you wrote your opinion in a respectful way but just had to respond that many of us are ok with an emphasis on good works and thoughts.

Deleteanon@9:27- Believe and practice whatever works for you. It shouldn't make a difference what doctrine anyone else follows, least of all someone on a reality TV show. This is what turns me off of religion in general- people thinking that their church understands the Bible better than all others. I think we just have to accept the fact that the whole lot of life, the Scriptures, and God is a mystery and will remain so until a curtain is pulled back for us all. If we do our best to bring love and compassion into this world, I hardly think that a loving and logical Creator would forsake us- regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof.

DeleteI personally don’t agree with MacArthur’s beliefs either, but Romans 11:6 is referring to our own works, and works of the Old Testament law (2 Timothy 1:9, Galatians 2:16 and 5:1-4), not the works that we are commanded to do throughout the New Testament. God’s grace itself teaches us to change our ways and live righteously (Titus 2:11) Eph 2:10 says we’re created unto good works, and faith in itself is a work (John 6:29), so if we believe that any works at all will make God's grace null, then even believing would destroy our chance for salvation. And why can we not live up to God’s standards? What sin is impossible to stop? (Phil 4:13)
DeleteThe criteria for Heaven is faith and trust in Jesus our crucified and risen Lord. We can differ as Christians on some things but we can't differ on that Fact. It is the very foundation of our faith. Good works follow a regenerated heart and life, but good works are as filthy rags without Christ as our Lord and Savior. On judgement day no good work will Save you, you will be accepted because of the Saving Grace of Jesus who you put your faith in. It is Christ and Christ alone, it is us being covered in His robe of Righteousness on that day that secures eternal life in Heaven.

DeleteIf we understand that God planned and allowed Jesus to die in our place, taking the penalty for our sins, and that Jesus did so freely and willingly because God and Jesus love us, we're going to be profoundly grateful for the sacrifice of His Only Son. Because of our responding love for God, our natural response will be to want to please Him in what we do. We are literally getting our life back when we receive Jesus's sacrifice on the cross, taking our place instead. Then the work begins of bringing ourselves into line with God's desires for us, purposing to do things and conduct ourselves "in a manner worthy of Christ" because we indeed have been bought with a price. It is work because it requires honesty on our part and being willing to cooperate with God's way of doing things-regularly laying down what we want, what we think we should do, and being willing to trust that God knows what He's talking about (after all, he's got 4,000+ years of experience in Human Psychology). ;) It requires regularly admitting that we do not have all knowledge, all power. It does require courage and perseverance to stand and not compromise (fold) to peer pressure or family/peers/co-workers/society mocking you. In this intolerant society especially, it requires taking a stand and having done all to stand, stand (staking your claim, holding your ground no matter what it costs you because it's the right thing to do). Christianity is the only religion in America that is subject to mockery in every facet of society from the grocery store checkout to the news stand, to the classroom to the workplace to the news media. No one ever says in a fit of anger and frustration "Well, Allah ***!" or "Buddha _______[insert curse word]". No one angrily invokes the name of a pagan goddess or a spirit of nature when they drop/break something or in the midst of a heated exchange. If they did, they'd be immediately remanded over for "Sensitivity and Diversity Training". But the same respect and protection is not afforded to Christianity. Perseverance is the test of character and integrity.

DeleteSome other thoughts: To 1:52 p.m. - could it be that James is saying that if you have faith and no works, then your faith is dead before men? If he meant that faith without works is dead for salvation, then it would contradict the clear parts of Scripture that say that salvation is a free gift from God, and in fact, he goes on later in the chapter to say that Abraham believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness. To 4:29 p.m. - the Bible teaches that there is only one way to get to heaven, and that is through believing the gospel, which is that Christ died, was buried, and rose from the dead, taking our sin upon Him, and giving us His righteousness in exchange. There is no other way to be saved, so it is imperative that people study the Bible to find out the truth. To 9:21 - regarding the Eph. 2:10 and Titus 3:8 (I am thinking you meant Titus 3:8 and not 3:11?) passages... in both instances, the preceding verses make clear that salvation is a gift (For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast - Eph. 2:8,9, and, Not by works or righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by His Grace..... Titus 3:5-7) Titus 3:8 then follows, saying that those of us who are following Christ should be careful to maintain good works, for these things are good and profitable to men. It does not say to salvation, and I take it to mean that it will be profitable to us, both in this life and in the next, if we maintain good works; but our salvation is free, as pointed out in vs. 5-7. Likewise, in the Ephesians 2:10 passage, it says that we SHOULD walk in good works, but the preceding two verses make clear that we are saved by the gift of grace. Regarding the John 6:29 passage, my KJV says, "This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." It says nothing about it being our work. In fact, Romans 4:5 says "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." Also to 9:21 p.m., as far as why we cannot live up to God's standards, James 2:10 says that if we keep the whole law, yet offend in one point, we are guilty of all. Likewise, Galatians 3:10 says ".....Cursed is everyone that continueth not in ALL things which are written in the law to do them." (Caps mine.) See also Rom 3:11 "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident; for The just shall live by faith." Just one more verse of the many that say that we are justified by faith alone, and not by works. Again, please don't take from this that works are not important - they are essential to living a successful life here on earth, and receiving rewards in heaven. It is just that they cannot buy you salvation. That is free.
I was surprised to find out that the Duggars were Calvinist. I know Jeremy and Ben are and I'm pretty sure Jim Bob would never have encouraged his daughters to marry them if Jim Bob wasn't a Calvanist himself, because it that radically dIfferent that other denominations in that it teaches predestination.

ReplyDeletePastors study a lot and need access to a lot of material. They may only read sections when studying a particular subject. Some people spend their extra time reading not watching tv or participating in social media.
DeleteI think there are a lot of reference books. It's part of a Pastor's library just like lawyers and doctors, etc have a library of reference material.
DeleteStudying theology is his job. So it isn't "down time" at all, but rather work time. I'd be more inclined to say the Duggar women are the ones with likely down time, since for some reason none of them can ever work at a job.

DeleteJeremy is 30 and he's probably been working on this book collection at least since he graduated college, or even before, so he's had 8-10 years to build it. He may not have read every single word of every book, but I'm not that surprised by the size. I have a friend who's kept collecting books from junior high onward, and has even more books.
DeleteI am not a pastor, but I do read a lot. Over the years, I've amassed quite a collection, fiction and non-fiction, that lines many bookshelves in my home. Why do you find it difficult to believe someone has read that many books?

If you can, download the grace to you app. You can listen to him expound on any versein the New Testament as well as quite a few in the Old Testament. John MacArthur in no way teaches ia works salvation. If you read John chapter 15 we naturally have fruit as true believers. God says to work out your own salvation in fear and trembling. In other words, be concerned if you say you were saved because you prayed a prayer but your life has not changed. Jesus said to take up His cross and follow Him. I feel totally opposite of you. I appreciate Pastor John MacArthur and his teaching so much. He is a man after Gods own heart. Watch some of his messages on YouTube, read his book the Gospel according to Jesus. Masters seminary and Masters University are excellent schools! They are some of the few that teach a six day creation. John MacArthur will be speaking at the Creation Museum in October. Maybe you can go hear him then. He is such a nice man and he would love to dialogue with you on his beliefs if he has time. God bless you, but Jeremy has picked the best seminary in the country, one of the best 😄✝️🙏👍🏻 listen to messages by Steve Lawson on YouTube as well. He is one of the teachers at the seminary. I did not mean to be rude at all but I had to speak up for Pastor John MacArthur. He has been my Bible teacher on the radio for 40 years. I am so thankful to the Lord for John MacArthur and his teaching! John MacArthur would never say you could live a perfectly Holy life. He totally understands that we are sinners saved by grace! God bless you and I pray that you can listen to a few of John MacArthur's teachings.
