Michelle and Samuel

Michelle Duggar and Samuel Dillard

Now that Jill and Derick Dillard are no longer part of Counting On, fans rarely see footage of them interacting with the rest of the Duggar family. Below are two new videos of Michelle Duggar playing with grandson Samuel Dillard at the "big house." Michelle is now called Grandma Duggar, while Jim Bob's mother is Grandma Mary.

    1. Love her. Miss seeing them. And Jana. I love counting on. But I miss the old shows when everyone was in it. I’d love to see how they are adapting with so many of the older kids out of the house now.

  3. In the first video Jessa is wearing her breastfeeding coverup. I can’t believe she’s still breastfeeding Henry!!! I guess she’s making up for the fact that Spurgeon weaned himself at 6 Months old!

    1. Henry is only 16 months old, it’s not uncommon to breastfeed your baby until it’s two if you can.

      Delete
    2. It's her shirt.

    3. Heavens, it seems Jessa's first order of business every day is to drive over to her parents' house.

      Delete
    4. Get over it!!! Jessa breastfeed as long as you can!!

    5. Henry's only 16 months, isn't he? That's not too old to breastfeed.

    6. Anon @ 10:41 Maybe shes using it as a form of contraception, although it shouldn't be relied on solely. I remember Michelle saying she weaned her babies at around six months to enable her to start trying to get pregnant again.

      Delete
    7. So what if she is? It's really her decision providing Henry still wants to nurse.

      Delete
    8. Why is that surprising? The WHO recommends breastfeeding until 2.

      AWW SO CUTE.

    11. Maybe she does not want to get pregnant. Of you are breastfeeding you can not get pregnant.

      Delete
    12. Who cares how long she nurses Henry? It's not impacting you after all

      Delete
    13. @3:56. I got pregnant with 6 of my babies while still breastfeeding. So, yes, you can get pregnant while breastfeeding.

      Delete
    14. 2:11, other people recommend it too, honestly it’s no ones business how long she decides to breastfeed him, if you can do it until you baby is 1.1/2-2 that’s great. You just have to go with what’s right for you.

      Delete
    15. I think it's a bit much to breast feed a 3 year old, it really isn't our call to tell someone how long to nurse their child

      Delete
    16. Yes you can get pregnant while still breastfeeding.

    17. You can get pregnant while breastfeeding! It is not reliable contraception...
Anyway, this is a precious picture and I miss seeing Jill and Derick and their boys. Precious souls. God bless!

    18. 1.27pm and 3.56pm you CAN definitely get pregnant whilst breastfeeding I know! Take note: Breastfeeding is not a form of contraception at all - that's a myth, old wives tale.

      Delete
    19. Anon @ 3:56 That is an old wives tale, you very definately can get pregnant while breatfeeding, it is not a reliable firm of contraception!

    20. You can get pregnant while breastfeeding as your cycles can return at any time and you ovulate before your first cycle! It's perfectly fine to BF for as long as your child needs it and encourage natural weaning after 12 mths when a child can have other natural non formula milk formsb(who guidelines are until 2yrs) ... Babies don't naturally wean fully off breastfeeding (solids introduced at 6mths though) before 1 Yr yrs probable that Spurgeon weaned due to a change in Jessa's milk due to pregnancy with Henry she thus had to introduce formula. Her cycles obviously returned early despite breastfeeding enabling her to become pregnant! My cycles returned at 3mths and 4mths with both my children. We use barrier contraceptives for this reason. I'm still ebf baby no 2..... A lot of surprise babies are a result of this myth.

      Delete
    21. Breastfeeding isn't a contraception! You can very well get pregnant while breastfeeding. Look for example at Hilaria Baldwin, Alec Baldwin's wife. They had 4 babies in a row (now aged 4 and a half to a month old). Every time the fell pregnant she was still breastfeeding her latest baby!

      Delete
    22. I have breastfed each of my children until the next child was born almost to age 2. And you can get pregnant while breastfeeding. I have 6 times. I am currently pregnant with baby 6 and still breastfeeding.

      Delete
    23. 3:56 - oh yes you certainly can get pregnant while breastfeeding!

      Delete
    24. To all you women spreading the lie that you can't get pregnant breastfeeding, please stop. That is untrue and one should make a point to not share falsehoods. The chances are lower but women get pregnant all the time when breastfeeding

      Delete
    25. Yes you can get pregnant while nursing .
I did get pregnant while nursing . I just weaned at 17 months .
I was started to wean after I found out I was pregnant but sadly when I was down to one feeding a day I lost my baby at 12 weeks.
So now I have no baby coming any more ( baby is in heaven) and a toddler who is no longer nursing since I was weaning for the baby.

      Delete
    26. I'm not a Dr. but I did work for OB/GYNs for over 13 years. You CAN get pregnant while breastfeeding. It does lower your chances for the first 6 months (but it can still happen), but after that your chances increase greatly.

      Delete
    27. Actually it's not as simple as "If you are breastfeeding you cannot get pregnant". Although LAM (the lactational amenorrhea method) is very effective as a "natural birth control" method while the baby is exclusively breastfed, it requires the baby to be nursed on a very frequent schedule for actual suppression of menses. A 16 months old is no longer being exclusively breastfed.

Jessa still breastfeeding Henry may explain why she, personally, is not yet pregnant with baby #3. But I would not recommend any other woman to think "as long as I keep breastfeeding I won't get pregnant" and rely on that as birth control.

Since, though many women who use LAM or other natural methods, just want to space kids a little and wouldn't mind a "surprise pregnancy" earlier than expected, others are in situations where that would be disastrous.

      Delete
    28. Hi, 3:56! As a mom who got pregnant with baby number 2 while breastfeeding, I recommend not relying on nursing as a sole method of contraception. (Of course, surprises can certainly be wonderful!)

      Delete
    29. @ 3:56 PM - Yes, you can actually get pregnant while breastfeeding. It has happened to many women. If you want to prevent a pregnancy, breastfeeding is not a reliable method to prevent it.

    30. 10:46 So sorry for your loss!

    31. Michelle did not wean her babies early so she could conceive again. She typically conceived when her youngest was 9 months old and they would wean themselves because of the change in her milk.

Some couples don't "try" to have lots of kids, it can just happen when you start young and you're not preventing it 😉

      Delete
  4. I’m sure Michelle tries, but she is not a natural with children. Always seems forced. I feel badly for her as I remember years ago her saying she asked The Lord to give her a love for children. I think she has spent her life trying to do something that does not come about organically.

    ReplyDelete

    1. All the Duggar videos seem rather "forced" so I don't think we should judge Michelle's interaction with her grandchildren by them

      Delete
    2. I completely disagree with you. She seems to genuinely love all of her children and grandchildren.

      Delete
    3. She seems great with babies to me, not forced at all, but with older kids she seems more awkward. But I mean that could just be because they’re on camera and you really aren’t going to act like your natural self on camera.

      Delete
    4. 11:07. I agree to an extent with your observation, and I remember her saying that too. I think when you put up such boundaries as to literally only side hug your children and grandchildren a natural flow of affection is obviously stunted. I can’t imagine not bear-hugging my children! It’s sad really because I think Michelle does try..she and JB have just created so many rules.

      Delete
    5. If Michelle didn't love children, I doubt she would have had so many.

      Delete
    6. I absolutely disagree. Michelle is incredibly nurturing and natural in this video... She is amazingly loving and caring with this little one.

      Delete
    7. I think it's just that she is aware that she is being recorded. It's hard to act natural when someone is holding a cellphone recording you. My family has taken videos and pictures of each other and we have promptly said Do Not Post that!!, after we seen ourselves in the video or picture. LOL

      Delete
    8. That would explain a lot

      Delete
    9. My goodness, I completely disagree. Respectfully of course, but I have 2 little boys close to the age of Jessa's kids and what I wouldn't give for my mother in law to show that level of interest in them. Even if she is 'forcing' it, she's rising to the plate. She's trying. Give her some credit, whether it is forced or not.

    10. that is one of the craziest things i have read on this blog and believe me their are a lot of haters with no life that love to spread hate here. Michelle Duggar is one of the most natural loving mothers i have ever seen.

    11. I have to agree with you. At the start of the video where she is singing to Samuel he looks at her as if to say 'who are you'?, my children would look and react to strangers like that at the same age.

    15. I've probably watched every single episode of 19 Kids and Counting and Counting on. From what I've seen Michelle Duggar has always demonstrated a love for her children and grandchildren. She is a beautiful woman and wonderful example of how to be a godly mother, grandmother, and wife.

      Delete
    16. Nothing wrong in asking God to help you love your children - I've uttered that prayer many times.
Also, I'm sure half the parents across the world are not naturally gifted with children but it doesn't disqualify them or mean they can't try to parent and enjoy their children and other children.

      Delete
    17. I disagree wholeheartedly.

      Delete
    18. Wow. I've always been able to see her heart for children. I didn't realize it wasn't obvious to everyone.

      Delete
    19. Michelle has always come across to me (from when I first saw her on one of the special episodes pre-19KAC) as rather detached from her children, treating them more like a schoolteacher minding her charges, than a mother caring for her actual flesh and blood. And many of her children seem more attached to the sister who is their assigned "buddy" than their actual mother.

However I realize this just my perception from watching TV, and not being "natural with children" is not the same as not loving them. She does seem to have a closer relationship with her older daughters and that they are visiting the "big house" frequently. She may just be the type to be more comfortable relating to grown-ups than little kids. I am as well.

So we can see her large family either as an exercise in selfishness (having children when she doesn't feel naturally attached to them and depriving them of a closer relationship with their mother) or sacrifice (having children as she believes this is what God has decided, not out of a selfish wish for an emotional connection). I am personally not sure if I am called to have children or not, myself. I can see it both ways.

      Delete
    20. I honestly wonder how many women (or men) would say that loving children comes organically to them? It's easy for some people to feel affection for a young infant but it can be harder to have those same feelings when they get older and can make their own choices about whether to obey, etc. Love is not a feeling for the most part, anyways.

    21. I think we as Moms pray all the time for help with our children. As a Mother every skill is required to raise a child. We are consoler, nurses, teachers, entertainers, chefs, you name it and that skill is required so yes asking God to give us love and wisdom for our children is a natural cry to God from a Mom.

    1. Gad 1:57- do you laugh much?

    2. She's had 19 children, I'm sure she can judge for herself if babies have too much food in their mouths and are unable to withstand a tickle.

      Delete
    3. Maybe she did not give them food on the table.

    4. Looks like a snack not a meal....lighten up. I think it’s always time to laugh and giggle, those fun times will be what children remember.

    5. Why are you guys jumping on OP? You really aren’t supposed to tickle a baby while they’re eating.

      Delete
    6. I've worked with small children (infants-5yr olds) for 20+ years and I would never, ever tickle any small child who has food in his mouth no matter how much food it is. It just takes a second of distraction to turn into a choking situation. It's just not safe, not smart. You can play before the food comes, before it goes into little mouths, or after they're bored/tired of eating. Truthfully, I felt Michelle's interaction here and the videoing were a little forced. It seemed to had the vibe of "watch me play with Samuel" and "see his personality". Michelle was trying pretty hard to get his attention, keep it, and get him to respond in the first video. In the second video, Samuel looks to the person videoing him (I'm going to assume it's Jill) for assurance before he begins responding to Michelle's efforts. He engages the person videoing and laughs at them and then turns his attention to Michelle.

    7. 8:08 BTW Michelle has also worked with children for 20+ years.

  8. What cute videos. I'll bet it's a lot of fun and family at the Duggar house all the time. I always especially loved their 19 Kids Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes. I just wish the Duggars would ditch TLC and go somewhere else and everybody be back on the show again.

    1. I don't think another network will air the Duggars. They have limited appeal and wouldn't attract a large enough viewing audience.

      Delete
    2. Debbie, 19kac got cancelled for a very good, valid reason. I highly doubt even UP channel would wager with that type of liability.

      Delete
    3. How can you miss seeing everybody on the show when on just about every episode of Counting On, the other family members have been featured? If anything, you should be mad at TLC for pretending to pull the other show when all they did was rename it and continue business as usual.

      Delete
    4. I doubt the Duggars can just leave TLC and find another network. One reason TLC airs so many promos for other TLC shows during the commercial breaks for CO, is because not too many advertisers want to be associated with the Duggars. The current social climate is even less forgiving of the kind of sins Josh has committed, than when they first came out.

Even without that, the current show is really only interesting for people who became fans (or haters) of the Duggars from the first show. The initial "see how mom and dad care for 19 kids" hook is long gone for the most part.

    1. Bottles at 16 months? Are you serious. At that age most children drink out of "sippy" cups.

      Delete
    2. If he is too old to nurse, he is too old for a bottle.

      Delete
    3. Your logic confuses me. If he's not too old for bottles he's not too old to breastfeed.

      Delete
    4. What?! 16 months isn’t too old to be breastfeeding! If you can’t do it that long that’s fine, but if you can and it works for you it’s a great thing to do until your baby is around 20 months old, give or take. Why the judgement?

      Delete
    5. Bottles no child should be given a bottle unless there is an issue with mom/baby resulting in failure/problems breastfeeding. God designed mom to feed her baby bottles are not natural and its disgusting to see toddlers sucking dummies/pacifiers and drinking from bottles due to lack of assurance and comfort from mum! Bottles are a last resort when the problems of our fallen bodies in a sinful world come into play.

      Delete
    6. Breastfeeding is way better than a bottle. And when you transition off of breastfeeding and they are older you switch to a cup not a bottle.

      Delete
    7. American women wean way early. It is recommended to breastfeed for 24 months

      Delete
    8. Lots of children are breastfed til 2 yrs old then go straight to a cup and not even a sippy cup. Personal family choice.

      Delete
    9. My daughter breast fed all three of her children till they were 2. Usually after age one the feedings were just before bed or nap time. They never used bottles. How long you breast feed is determined by a mother and her child and not “social norms”. Bottles are harder to take away...a child can’t nurse and run around the room at the same time.

      Delete
    10. Well, if you're going to decide when Henry should stop breastfeeding rather than letting his mom decide, you should also know that babies should make the switch from a bottle to a cup when they're around a year old.

      Delete
    11. As others have stated, the WHO recommends breastfeeding until age 2 (and I think that's actually a MINIMUM not a maximum age to wean), so Henry is far from "too old" for breastfeeding. Also, not all babies like to drink from bottles.

Now there is room for argument that the WHO guidelines apply to all countries including those where babies may not have as much access to food and formula. The AAP recommends breastfeeding for one year.

But unlike some other Duggar parenting choices where I understand reasons for concern, I don't see how breastfeeding at 16 months has any risk of harming Henry. It may not be socially acceptable in some circles, but I can think of many other things the Duggars do that I'd question before this one.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I’m sure this is in response to the above judge mental comment regarding how long Jessa is breastfeeding. Good for her! Why would she switch to bottles? Bottles are bad for tooth and palate formation while breastfeeding is good for it. Why have extra bottles to clean? Why give a manufactured product when her body makes the perfect nutrition for her son? WHO recommends breastfeeding to age two “and beyond” so long as it mutually desired. Is there an age where broccoli is no longer nutritious? Why would her milk no longer be nutritious? Because it makes you uncomfortable? Oh, what about the argument that if they can ask for it it’s too long... hmmm, a one day old infant knows how to ask for it if you understand nonverbal communication of sucking hands. You know who gets to decide how long a child breastfeeds? The mother and that child. No one else’s business whatsoever.

    1. Spurgeon was seen with bottle in mouth past the age of two. He would even carry it around by only his teeth. Jessa doesn't have a problem giving her sons bottles, she just wants to breastfeed Henry as long as possible. Spurgeon self-weaned at six months around the time Henry was conceived.

    3. 4:31, it's not possible for you to know if your statement is true. I would venture to say it's not necessarily true. It depends on the grandparent's mental state and how invested they make themselves with their grandchildren. I know a man who has literally dozens of grandchildren, prays for each one of them by name every single day, and can rattle off their names in a matter of seconds. He has invested his time and love into his grandchildren. I think Michelle and Jim Bob are much the same way. With true love and care, with taking the time to do one-on-one things and purposefully have meaningful conversations, they can certainly get to know them as individuals.

They were the healthiest kids I’ve ever known-even now as young adults they are far healthier than their friends. Breast is best because of passing on immunities:):) HOWEVER-to each mother her own!!! She knows her baby best. I’ve found that it’s best to focus on all the things a mom/grandson IS DOING RIGHT to encourage them. Unless the child is in immediate danger...and no, tickling between bites of corn is not immediate danger....

  22. I don't understand something. People write on here complaining that they don't see Michelle and Jill's boys so then Ellie posts something and all you guys can do is complain?
If you watch the video, it looks like it was loaded in such a way its reversed. The one on the bottom shows more food in front of Sam than the one on top where Michelle is tickling.
As for jessa and her visiting her mom, how do you the poster know she goes to her parents every morning? Also, why do you assume she is breast feeding just because she looks heavier because of the design on her top? Quit judging and belly aching about a family that you really don't know. Be thankful you get to see these clips at all. A lot of the public don't want to see them in any format.
