Joe and Kendra Welcome a Baby Boy

Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwell Duggar baby Garrett David Duggar

The newest grand-Duggar has arrived! Garrett David Duggar was born yesterday, June 8th, weighing 7lbs 8oz and measuring 20.5 inches long. What's the story behind the name Garrett? It's Joe's middle name, as well as Michelle's father's first name. It also happens to be the middle name that Josh and Anna Duggar chose for their fifth child, Mason.

Garrett made his appearance nine days ahead of his June 17th due date, on Joseph and Kendra Duggar’s nine-month anniversary. Both mom and baby are doing well. To view the first photo of the family of three, visit the Duggars’ website.

The new parents share a message with fans in the video below.

  9. So exciting! How fun for Joy and Kendra to be such close friends and get to be brides 15 weeks apart and then become moms 15 weeks apart from each other!

  10. He's beautiful and his parents look ecstatic. I'm wondering if others have experience with reusing names like the Duggars seem to? My family really doesn't use a name more than once in a generation and I want to know if it's a commonly done thing.

    1. My children both have their dad's middle names. That's what I did, but I can't speak for other people.

    2. Yes. Even in little families it happens. My best friend in grade school, on her mother's side, her grandpa's name was John. Her only uncle was named John. And one of her two boy cousins was named John. Then her dad was named John. And because they felt there were already too many Johns in the family, they named her one and only little brother, Daniel John. So. Yeah it happens in other families.

      Delete
    3. Not uncommon for cousins to share a name, especially if it is a grandparents name. My dad's brother and 3 cousins were all named after their grandfather.

      Delete
    4. It is Joseph's middle name, so I think it is nice they used it. Cute name too!

      Delete
    5. I think it's more common down south. Up here in NY, people often get offended when you "steal" their baby name. LOL

      Delete
    6. In my family it is common to pick names that honor a relative, but the name isn't necessarily exactly the same but a variant. My name is very similar to that of my paternal grandmother, but not spelled the same.

I know a lot of families where it's traditional to have the oldest son's oldest son carry on the name of the father, I even recall meeting a "_____the 5th" once. And no they are not descended from royalty.

Also, many Christian families believe they should only use "Biblical" names, but also don't want to saddle their kids with a name like "Methuselah" so they wind up reusing the limited number of names that are both in the Bible AND considered a "normal name" by mainstream culture. Oh, and also not the name of an evil character such as Jezebel.

    7. Super common I’m our family. My mother in law was upset for years that everyone named their boys are my father in law in some way, but she didn’t have a namesake 😂. Super sweet tradition and a neat honor to those he’s named after. Wonder if they go with all G names or have a theme with their names! Love this family..

  24. Congratulations on the birth of Garrett David. Let me guess. Is David the name of one of Kendra's grandfathers, since Garrett is the name of one of Joe's? He looks like Joe.

  25. Thanks for the link to the picture!

Okay, I really admire Joe and Kendra for 3 things:

    1. They didn't sell the first baby picture to People or some other tabloid, but posted it on the Duggar website, free for all their fans to see.

    2. They seem to have had a home birth, based on their wearing normal clothes in the photo and there being plain wallpaper in the background. But they were smart to NOT make their birthing plan public beforehand, thus avoiding judgmental comments about it.

    3. Joe is looking at Kendra while she talks to the camera, not the other way around.

I also found the handful of baby bump pics in the TLC clip to be very tasteful.

    1. My guess it was a hospital birth. Notice they are wearing hospital bracelets.

    2. I think they seem like a really sweet couple, and I love that they’re doing their own thing and being private since that’s what they want. I’m pretty sure she had him in a hospital though, because they’re both wearing hospita bracelets.

      Delete
    3. Anon at 9:48PM again. I hardly ever reply to myself, but many posters have pointed out the hospital ID bracelets Joe and Kendra have on, so I have to correct myself. Seems the picture was taken just after they got home from the hospital. But I still think it was smart for them not to disclose their plans earlier.

I also feel bad that my first reaction was to praise Joe and Kendra by comparing them to the other Duggars who made different choices. I usually protest when other posters "praise" of one Duggar or another, as a cover to make passive-aggressive jabs at others. Sorry I fell into the same trap myself.

    4. Think you'll discover it was a hospital birth due to tags on Joe and Kendra wrists seen in photo. Looks like a Curtain behind to me.

      Delete
    5. Hospital birth; wrist bands and curtain behind them in the photo. Doesn’t matter as long as all went well with mom and baby coming through the process without extra trauma.

      Delete
    6. They are on people so they did Shell the picture. They are on tv so why not?

      Delete
    7. Anon at 1015AM: They may have sold some pics but People didn't get an exclusive on the FIRST picture. If they had then this post would have contained a link to the People website, not the Duggar website, as has been the case with some other births. I'm sure People would have paid even MORE money for rights to show the picture first.

I get the sense Joe and Kendra value having a measure of privacy, over a publicity blitz designed to maximize their income from tabloids. We didn't even get "baby bump" pics until AFTER baby was born.

I wonder if one reason for this is because Joe was away from the cameras for the year he went to Crown College. Maybe he actually came to appreciate having some privacy. Josiah also was away from the cameras for months when he went through the ALERT program. I wonder if that affected him the same way and he'll also be more private? Time will tell.

    8. I believe they did sell the photos to People.

    9. @11:one very important detail you overlook. The same company who owns TLC owns People Magazine. The magazine would NOT have to pay the Duggars for the pictures, maybe just a small amount. It would part of their contract for the show to advertise the show.

      Delete
    10. @9:17 Discovery, Inc. owns TLC. Meredith Corporation owns People magazine. They are not affiliated.

      Delete
    11. 9:17 - The couples are still using their children's births and weddings to make money even if it is part of a larger TLC contract. Some of the couples also sell exclusives to US Weekly.

  37. A healthy baby and a safe hospital birth. And not to big. She must have been eating healthy foods.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lol funny that you say that... what foods you eat don't necessarily determine the size of your babu. My niece was nearly 10 pounds and my sister in law eats extremely healthy as she is a registered dietician. Oh and this is coming from a registered nurse...

      Delete
    2. Unless you're in Kendra's circle of close frineds or a family member, how would you know how healthy Kendra's been eating? It's not like she's been featured on Counting On for the last 9 months, making social media posts of her/their meals, sharing recipes, or been captured in Duggar family pictures eating at family events over the last 9 months. For all we know, she could have a serious sweet tooth or a penchant for fried, fatty foods. LOL

      Delete
    3. I once knew a woman who had a baby as big as Gideon, but who was actually VERY conscientious about healthy eating, to the point people were worried she was too thin to have a healthy pregnancy, and her husband kept constantly pushing her to eat more.

But she never looked that big and everyone was shocked at the baby's size. She did not have gestational diabetes. Her husband was a tall man who probably weighed over 200 pounds, but he wasn't a big baby himself.

So it's not as simple as "if a baby is too big we can always blame the mother for not eating well/eating too much". People who keep stating this as fact are engaging in mommy-shaming, IMO.

  38. Good for them that they choose to go to a hospital. She looks so good!

  39. Did they have to 'rush' her to the hospital or did Kendra elect to deliver in a hospital from the beginning? Glad all are well.

    1. I think they just went to the hospital for the labor and delivery. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me

      Delete
    2. They did go to the hospital. Sure she wants a normal and safe delivery. Not an emergancy c section

      Delete
    3. 10:17, a home birth doesn’t mean emergency csection. A lot of women feel more comfortable giving birth in their own home, but you need a properly trained midwife with you to recognize any warning signs so if need be you can go to the hospital without needing an emergency csection.

      Delete
    4. For the Duggar girls so far : home labor=Emergency c-section!!!

  42. Congratulations. He looks so sweet. Glad the birth was private, in hospital and he was a mid-range weight so no added complication.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No offense, but you're assuming the birth was private. Perhaps we should wait to see if it shows up in TLC episode first.

      Delete
    2. I agree, that is an assumption. Based on all Duggar history, we can expect the baby's birth to be featured on the show. Perhaps she has some sense and didn't allow herself to be filmed for TV actually pushing the baby out, but the storyline will be covered at least.

      Delete
    3. Anna's last 3 babies were not shown although one of those we saw them going to the birthing centre. Jill's last baby, Samuels birth wasn't shown as obviously had complications they kept private. I'm guessing the storyline will be covered but I'll be very surprised if Kendra will be shown giving birth (yay for Kendra!) going from the few photos we saw of her during pregnancy and Joe is more private than his older married siblings.

  43. So happy for them that Garrett has arrived safely. Joe and Kendra both have on hospital bracelets in Garrett's newborn photo, so I hope that she went there as her first choice and didn't have an emergency. I am not against homebirths at all, but I'm just sad when anyone has to switch from that to the hospital because something has gone wrong.

  49. Congratulations on the safe arrival of your sweet baby boy! The best advise I ever got was our first doctor. He advised (after my mother telling me I was starving my baby) that a lot if people would tell me things. He said for me to listen and keep anything I agreed with and toss the rest! This is your baby and you will know as his mother what is best for him and you! All babies are different so what people share may have worked for them, but your situation is not thiers. The Dr also told me that nursing would be more relaxinformation (which helps the milk "come down") Also, if you feel you don't have enough milk, take some brewers yeast. Finally, make a sign to put on the door "shoo, baby's sleeping" you could put it on the door as you start to nurse and leave it on as long as you feel you need to....including a nap for you! :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Congrats! :) she looks a bit different in the video, more mature in a good way :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Aww, congratulations! He’ll probably have some pretty blue eyes, seeing how both Joe and Kendra do.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Wow, normal size baby, normal hospital delivery, happy looking parents, normal name!

Joy-Anna looked all tired and exhausted after having her 10 lb baby. Makes me question how come Duggar daughters all have huge babies and dramatic deliveries. Hope Jinger will be an exception.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's partly genetics the duggar girls have large babies then the Bates girls so far are at the other end of the scale and have had tiny babies around 5-6lbs. The girls hardly look pregnant at 9mths!

      Delete
    2. I think it’s genetics, because Michelle had big babies as well, and both Anna and Kendra have delivered smaller babies.

      Delete
    3. Well Joy ended up needing a csection and was in labor for a while prior to that, so yeah I can see why she’d be tired. I’m fully pro home birth if that’s what someone chooses, but I’m glad to see Kendra felt comfortable having her baby at the hospital and not that she had to have her baby at home since some of her in laws did. Garrett looks adorable😍

      Delete
    4. Wow, what a brilliant post that manages to bash every other married Duggar in the guise of praising Joe and Kendra.

Personally I find an old-fashioned but classic name like "Henry" or "Gideon" to be much more "normal" than a surname-turned-first name like "Garrett". But it's not my baby to name.

We also don't know exactly what happened or if there's going to be TLC footage or a magazine exclusive on the way. So I hope you don't wind up disappointed if there turns out to be some drama involved.

      Delete
    5. Jinger will go to the hospital too. She is smart and will not take a risk.

      Delete
    6. 5:17, you don’t know what Jinger will do, so don’t state something as fact. I’m thinking she’ll go with a hospital birth too, but we’ll have to wait and see what she chooses to do, and be respectful of her choice either way. Home births are amazing IF you have a properly trained midwife.

      Delete
    7. Glad that Kendra did not wants a dramatic delivery and she was in the hospital with a real doctor.

      Delete
    8. The Duggars should look at Kendra. As a first time mom she makes safe decissions. I think Jinger wil do the same.

      Delete
    9. I hate to say it but Jill, Jessa, and Joy all took “eating for two” quite literally. Kendra, Jinger, and the Bateses seemed to be more mindful of their eating and exercise, which is why they stayed fit and had/will have no complications.

      Delete
    10. I'm pretty sure none of the Duggars WANT a "dramatic delivery". Some very cynical people here are insinuating some of the Duggars are actually deliberately making unsafe birth plans and WANT to have a dramatic complication that can be aired on TV and increase ratings.

Really? Then why did we never find out what exactly happened with Samuel? There seems to have been some complication, but that birth wasn't on TV.

There is an oversimplified message some people are pushing here of "home birth is always unsafe, hospital birth is always safer, and mothers who choose homebirth are all reckless, irresponsible and lacking in common sense".

But while I do think Jill is now a very high risk mother for a home birth, and Joy-Anna may want to seriously ponder the risks as well: Anna never had any problems having her babies at home, and Jessa had no complications when birthing Henry. And what happened with Spurgeon could have happened in the hospital as well.

I personally would plan to go to the hospital to have a baby but I have no problems with home birth for low risk mothers. Most of the problems happened with mothers who were NOT low risk.

      Delete
    11. The Duggars have not been very good at explaining their reasons for home birth attempts and repeated home birth attempts, you must admit that. We've seen the results of those attempts. It really does make you wonder who's behind the decisions, OB/GYNs or Jill-type people.

      Delete
    12. 2:09 PM == I think Duggar girls just overfeed their babies. A baby grows only as much as mother eats, unless the mother has gestational diabetes. I highly doubt that all 3 daughters have gestational diabetes. Michelle had much smaller babies, Jessa was the biggest at close to 10 lbs I think, others were smaller.

      Delete
    13. Jill was really high risk and she still was at home. It went terrible wrong.

      Delete
    14. Praise to Joe and Kendra. She looks fantastisch and had a normal baby and was safe at a hospital. Others could learn from them!

    1. I'll try but I must admit I'm already weary of people bashing other Duggar couples while "praising" Joe and Kendra. We don't even know if they planned on a hospital birth from the start or not.

Already dreading what will happen if Jinger also has a "drama-free normal hospital birth".

      Delete
    2. 10:19 - I would hope you would be happy that Jinger had a complication-free birth if she does safely deliver in hospital. At the end of the day, I think it's universal that posters want the Duggar women to have safe labors and healthy babies.

      Delete
    3. Of course I'd be happy for Jinger. I won't be happy for Jill, Jessa and Joy, for the bashing guaranteed to be directed their way. And not just in a "I want them to be safe" way, but a "Those women are so reckless, ignorant and irresponsible" way.

      Delete
    4. Jeremy will decide that they go to the hospital.

      Delete
    5. The vast majority of posters who have praised Kendra and Joe for going to the hospital do so without even mentioning Jill, Jessa, and Joy. Even then, the praise comes from Kendra having access to highly trained medical professionals throughout her labor.
Where I see people bashing the girls now is the size of their babies compared to Garrett, who still came in at a hearty weight. That has nothing to do with where the women decide to give birth.
There are some unfair comments, however, they'll probably be present whether Jinger has no complications and safely delivers at a hospital, birth center, or home birth. It's the training, decision making, and actions of those attending the Duggar women that most of those commenters have concerns about.

      Delete
    6. 5:26, funny typo, let me help you out there, “Jeremy and Jinger will decide together if they want a home or hospital birth.”

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Having a baby at home doesn’t mean you aren’t using common sense. Using an unqualified midwife does. If you want a homebirth (which I am 100% for if they’re done right) you need a CNM not a CPM. CPMs simply don’t have enough training.

      Delete
    2. The duggars don't use CNM. Thats why it went so wrong.

  69. its funny how they are the 3rd duggar couple to get pregnant on what seems to be their wedding nite makes u wonder about the timing or are their courting rules only for telly

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not really. It’s not uncommon to get pregnant on your wedding night if you aren’t using any form of BC. For all we know the girls could track their cycles and then purposefully set their wedding date for when they think they’ll be ovulating.

      Delete
    2. How rude. None of them have had their babies at a time that would have made it possible for them to be pregnant before their wedding.

      Delete
    3. I think the "rules" are for real. How well Jim Bob and Michelle can enforce them is open to question.

      Delete
    4. Why wonder? The brides are young and healthy. And so are the grooms. Fertility is high when you are young as my grandmother would warn me when I was a young girl (wait till marriage and don"t be taken in by some smooth talking guy. Once is all it can take been you are young) They do not smoke or have problems with weight (either too much or too little). They are not using birth control. So, it is not surprising that they have their first child within 9 to 11 months of getting married.

      Delete
    5. I think the "timing" remark was about how they could be counting monthly days for when they can schedule a wedding & honeymoon. I don't know any other family who's had 3 honeymoon babies and counting. It does seem to defy the natural odds.

      Delete
    6. Oh please. These are healthy young women who don't use BC. A pregnancy immediately after their wedding is quite likely. Get real and stop trying to spread rumors.

      Delete
    7. Time 10:12PM Mon 6/11
That comment you made sounds rude who cares about how they got pregnant It's not our business.

      Delete
    8. If you look at the overall picture, it is statiscally out of the norm. Yes, they are young. Yes, they do not use birth control but there is a small window each month during which a woman can conceive and, even then,it is not guaranteed.

Needy,it was not a rude post but an observation. The Duggars believe that the more children they have, the better. And they preach that belief. If they practice natural methods to encourage conception, those who want to emulate the Duggars and have large families would find that information helpful.

      Delete
    9. of course it was beyond rude. it was an awful accusation. only reason more people don't have honeymoon babies nowadays is that most people are together before marriage now and are on birth control.

      Delete
    10. Three honeymoon babies in one family does go against the odds. You only have about a 25% chance of conceiving any month when you're in your 20's.

  70. I think if you look at Kendra's wrist you will see a hospital ID bracelet so I think she most likely delivered in hospital, but you are in & out so quickly if all is well she could have been back home within hours. Kendra looks fantastic & the baby is just gorgeous. Bless all three of them.

    2. I've never been to Arkansas so maybe they do it differently there, but I've never heard of any hospital allowing a mother and child to leave "within hours" after birth. At the very least they recommend a 23 hour stay. And as the announcement was made the day after the birth, maybe that's what happened. Or they found a place in the hospital to take the pic that looked "homey".

Also, free standing "birthing centers" DO allow for mother and child to return home in a few hours, this was the case for Alyssa Bates. So maybe Kendra went to one, too. That might be a good compromise between the comforts of home and the support available at a hospital.

    3. I've had five children and I always go home from the hospital as soon as is allowed which is 24 hours after giving birth if the baby and I are healthy.

    4. My experience as a labor and delivery nurse is that there is no hard and fast rule about how long a mother “must” stay. The 23 hour rule comes from the insurance industry. If you stay less than 24 hours you are “outpatient” if you stay over 24 hours you are “inpatient”. Once you check into the hospital as either an inpatient or outpatient a doctor must discharge you as medically ready to go home or you would be leaving against medical advise. Once a mother gives birth if there are absolutely no complications and baby is eating well and maintaining their body temperature, they may go home. Most pediatricians would recommend a check on the baby within 7 days to make sure birthweight is being maintained and that jaundice has not developed.

Arkansas does not practice medicine differently than other states and both a hospital and a birthing center recognize a healthy mom and baby using the same criteria.

      Stop arguing about these topics.

  71. I love the name! I wonder if there is an older relative named David or just a biblical name they like. John shares the name along with Israel, I think. I love the name David, just wondering.

    1. Little Israel's middle name is David - perhaps the Duggars of Michelle's family have (had) a David.

I like the name Davie also.
THink about 19 kids coming up with baby names - so far I've liked them all - even Spurgeon

    1. Yep. Seems like Kendra wanted a birth where there was trained medical staff on hand should a problem arise. Good idea, especially for a first child.

    2. Maybe homebirth centers are giving out their own bracelets now.

    3. I don't know how it started that Duggar daughters want a homebirth. Michelle had hospital births, and I'm sure Kendra's mom also went to a hospital to give birth to her kids. So seems like Kendra also had a normal hospital birth. And look at this cute baby! And happy looking parents!

  78. To be fair I don't even live in the US let alone Arkansas, I live in the U.K. & here mum's can go home 6 hours after delivery all being well (just look at the Dutchess of Cambridge after the birth of her son in April). I went home 7 hours after delivering my second child, though stayed in 2 days with my first as I had a post partum haemorrhage. So my thinking was as the US medical system is portrayed so well I assumed (maybe wrongly) that new mum's (all being well) would be able to go home within hours if they want to the same as here in the U.K. I know many woman who have gone home within hours to get back to their normal environment as soon as possible.

    1. The U.S. has notoriously horrible healthcare relative to other comparable economies, including a maternal mortality rate 1.5+ times that of the U.K. American mothers also have 0 weeks and 0 days of guaranteed maternity leave.

    2. I like the UKs laws. Here in the US you typically stay 2 days in the hospital if you had a normal birth.

    3. New “moms” here in the US can leave within a few hours after birth, that is a decision made by the woman and her doctor. I picked up a negative attitude in your post. I am proud to live in the US and believe we have fabulous, modern healthcare. No system is perfect, no doubt we could improve. Don’t put the US down if you have never experienced it for yourself.

    4. After a normal vaginal delivery, and a healthy baby and mom, they can go home after 24 hours.

    5. 6:40, listen we really don’t have the best health care here, Fuzzyferrets comment didn’t seem at all negative to me.

    6. I am sorry if you felt my comment was negative in any way, it was meant to be the total opposite, I have always thought the us were well ahead of the uk in many medical advances though we have a wonderful system here called the NHS which I have been proud to work & be apart of for 30 years. I would never dream to put your country's health system down as my only knowledge of it is what I have read or watched on tv (which has always impressed me). The only thing that has worried me is that it's not available to all as it's based on ability to pay. Im sorry if I caused you offence. I have not wrote on this blog in a few months because I felt there were many negative comments from people toward others, I'm quite sad that the first time I'm back in a while they have been directed at me when I have been trying to be positive not negative.

  80. I would also like to say my comment was in response to one I did further up the page but it hasn't been slotted in as a reply to a previous comment so maybe that's why when read it sounded offensive. In my first comment I mentioned I thought Kendra had a hospital delivery due to the wrist bracelet & perhaps she had a very normal uncomplicated delivery & all was well with mum & baby & she went home a few hours later. There was then a response from a reader which said she didn't know the rules in Arkansas but she had never heard of anyone going home a few hours after giving birth. It was that lady's comment I was responding to & stating tbf I don't even live in the US, but the response wasn't put in under her comment & that's why perhaps my post seemed offensive. Again I assure you this was not the intention at all. I really don't wish to offend any readers.

    1. Fuzzferet, I'm the lady who you replied to and I didn't find your comment offensive at all. I also think the people offended on behalf of the US health care system were actually replying to the poster who stated "the US has notoriously horrible healthcare" and it's obvious to me that's not your opinion. Thanks also for not jumping to conclusions based just on what you see on TV. I hope you stick around. Your comments are very thoughtful and more reasoned than a lot of the short Twittersque posts I've read here.
