Garden Like a Duggar

The warm weather is here to stay, which means it's time to start planting! Last year, we showed you photos of the beautiful garden and outdoor space that Jana created, with help from her siblings. Earlier this spring, we also shared a video of last year's garden.

This week, Jana Duggar and the Duggar siblings are hard at work getting the garden ready to go.

Whether it's growing produce, doing landscaping at one of Jim Bob's rental properties, or tumbling down the hill on a giant slip 'n side, the Duggars love being outdoors. While writing this post, we came across a couple gardening photos from previous years.

  1. It's a great project for the kids!

  2. I wish I could get my younger siblings to do that.

  3. Why do the Duggars need to mow the grass on their rental properties? Most landlords expect their tenants to mow the grass and maintain the yards surrounding the houses they occupy.

    1. Beats me. My parents had rental houses for well over 20 years. They did any needed repairs to the houses and the tenants did whatever yard work was done on the property.

    2. Not commercial properties.

    3. I've lived in both situations. I much prefer when the landlord mows, of course. :)

    4. Who knows? The only way it would be cost effective is if they were charging their tenants for maintaining the yard in addition to the rent they're charging them.

    5. Some landlords take care of landscaping to ensure the property is well kept. Consistent outdoor maintenance prevents a situation where more money needs to be invested to bring a property back to its original state. I also think that the Duggar land holdings include commercial properties.
I've known property owners who incorporated lawn care into the rent.

    6. It depends upon the rental agreement. Some tenants will have the landlord do it and some the tenants will do the lawn themselves. I've lived in both situations.

    7. It’s commercial properties, not usually residential

    8. Not here in the northeast!

    9. I think that they own commercial rental properties.

    11. No, that’s not the case. About 1/2 of the homes Ive rented have lawncare included in the rent. Just depends on the landlord.

    12. I'm a renter and I know lots of renters, none of us do any mowing or shoveling snow. That is our landlords job. If we offer to do any of that then it's money off our rent!

      Delete
    13. What?! No! That’s the benefit of renting—no yard work.

      Delete
    14. The rented house we had once, we did all the outside stuff, even the lawn. The landlord lived across the street but he had his own house and yard to take care of. We were half his age and had done yard work growing up, so why not do our part? After all, we lived there, so we felt responsible for the upkeep. We did it for free, as we would have done anywhere we lived.

    15. I'm a renter and we do our own yard work. Previous tenants didn't do some of what we do though. The landlord did the extras. One guy hired a lawn cutting service. I'm sure if the landlord had offered or had multiple children who could help, the tenant would have had them cut the grass.

  5. Thank you for sharing. It's nothing like eating vegetables right out of your garden...Jane

  6. It so sweet to see all the siblings work together. Please post more picks and maybe Jana could share some tips.I remember my parents had a small garden. We had box turtles that would eat all the grub worms.I loved the miniature tomatoes they were always the best straight from the garden.

  7. I thought the Duggars didn't eat vegetables.

    1. ??? They seem to eat a healthy diet, none of them have a weight problem.

    2. Well, ya thought wrong. :) Even in the days when it seems like they were eating straight from the pantry, they had rows of canned vegetables. Then there was the time Jim Bob snacked on a can of peas when he was working with a trainer. More recently, I usually see a big container of salad when they're going through the line in their kitchen, usually when they have company. I'll bet they've always eaten veggies, but I'm guessing it was the frozen or canned varieties in the earlier days.

      Delete
    3. Canned vegetables? 5:45...there's not much or no nutrition in canned vegetables. The high heat they go through kills any good that's in the vegetables. Just research it!

      Delete
    4. Frozen definitely is better and more nutritious than canned!

      Delete
    5. 8:28s, of course canned vegetables are not very nutritious! I never said they were. I was just responding to the person who said they didn't eat vegetables. A canned vegetable is still a vegetable.

  8. Fresh fruit and vegetables are always good. I wonder if the Duggars can or freeze any of their crop. My blackberry bushes are loaded with blooms. With any luck I'll have a good crop and be able to freeze some for later.

  9. Funny, years ago the Duggars never did anything outdoors!!!

    2. Really? In the older shows they'd show the kids playing, biking, swinging, etc. outside fairly often.

      Delete
    3. Or maybe the show didn't feature that aspect of their lives until now...

  10. Nothing like fresh vegetables straight into the pot! Box turtles; great idea! 🌷🍇❤

  11. Landlords like to mow the grass on their properties so they can keep an eye on their tenants and to make sure that their properties are in good shape while they are being rented. Besides, some renters may not have lawn equipment.

  12. These are old photos. I remember the one with the little girl picking something from the garden with no shoes on. We've already seen these. I wish this blog would quit trying to pass off old photos as being current ones. If the ladies wish to post old photos, please identify them as being posted before. That would be the honest thing to do. It is mid May and this is NOT a time to START a garden, obviously.

    1. Hi there,

The first two photos are new, and the others, as stated, are old. May is a great time to plant a garden, especially since many places in the U.S. have had a cold spring and are just finally starting to have warmer weather. :)

    2. Time to start a garden..depends where you live. People here have already prepared their gardens by mid May. They may have planted seeds. Planting of already sprouted plants is May 24th weekend.

    3. Anon 4:25 AM. It’s obvious you didn’t read the whole post before writing an ugly comment. It’s best to get your facts straight. Lily and Ellie stated, “While writing this post, we came across a couple gardening photos from previous years.” First of all there is no need for you to be ugly and second of all think before you write. Be kind. Thank you Lily and Ellie for your hard work on all your blogs.~C

    4. Not sure where you live, but even where I am in northern Canada, many people are starting a garden now, in mid May, even after a brutally cold winter.

    5. 425 AM, you need to go back and re read the post before you make your disrespectful rude remarks to Ellie. It clearly states in her post by pictures that after the first two the ones there after are "from previous years".Try being kind and respectful next time and maybe even say thank you to her for the pictures!

      Delete
    6. Anon 425. Before you go off on people, it specifically states in the post that some pics are from previous years. I think an apology to Lily and Ellie is warranted .

      Delete
    7. What do you mean obviously? I live in alabama and we always start our garden in may.

      Delete
    8. Ellie said some of the photos were older ones, as well as a couple new ones. Ease up! Just ask whatever question you have. Ellie will always respond if she is able. No need to be rude. I have NEVER seen these ladies try to pass off older pictures as new. They always explain the dating of any pictures.

  13. The Duggars are such resourceful people. Jana and Jason made a good Youtube video about their garden's produce, which I enjoyed a lot. It's called "Jason and Jana Share Produce Tips/Counting On," if anybody would like to watch it. I wish Jana would do a video series and share her knowledge on things. She's a very skilled and talented lady in a lot of things.

  14. Gardening is good. It strengthens our bond with the Earth and helps us draw on its energy.

    1. I don't think my bond with the Earth would be strengthened by operating a front-end loader. They should be out there with rakes and shovels, if they want to get the real gardening experience.

      Delete
    2. Anon 9:41. There's that. Using a front loader to pile up a mound seems a bit different from any gardening I've ever done. I have no idea why they do that.

    3. some people have to complain about anything.

    4. I've got to agree with Anonymous @ 9:22- I'm 50 and come from a long line of gardeners and have known countless gardeners. I've yet to know anyone that makes a mound/berm to garden. I know some cultures planted sister crops in small mounds spaced out across their fields, but not one long high berm. I've honestly never seen anybody (contractor, gardener, or landscaper) use a front loader in such a small space for that type of task either. ;)

  15. To all you renters that think yard care is the "landlord's job", you are paying him/her a hefty amount for it and most likely far more than a lawn service company would charge. It might be included in your rent so you have no idea how much extra the landlord is making off that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. How about being a nice decent person who takes care of your home, even if your name isn't on the deed? How about not worrying about what sort of profit the landlord is making on anything? After all, you agreed to live there, at an agreed-on price. Now do the right thing and show some respect for the house and the owner by taking care of what you can by yourself. It's not a big deal to mow a lawn or shovel snow. You will be rewarded with a good reference for the next place you want to rent. No amount of money can buy a good reputation. That's earned through hard work and good character.

      Delete
    2. Properties rent for whatever the market allows. If a prospective renter didn't think a property was worth the desired rent, they would live/work elsewhere. It has nothing to do with what the landlord does or doesn't profit.

      Delete
  16. It would be fun to see a list of all the fruits and vegetables they harvested and approximately how many pounds. As always I enjoy your blog very much.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Why do they pile everything up in a V like that? I've heard of raised bed gardening, but that looks crazy. You have to climb a mountain to plant or pick anything!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know. Usually the raised beds are flat and it is easier to plant and harvest than in the ground. Sometimes if you have poor soil conditions raised beds can be filled with better soil and you get a better harvest.

      Delete
    2. I think it may be done due to poor soil conditions where they live. They can bring in top soil and fertilizer to make a spot where the soil is better than the surrounding area.

      Delete
    3. I wondered that too! Seems extra high and unhandy to me!

  18. I want to see photos of Jana actually shoveling dirt.

    2. They seem to use raised beds for their gardening. Someone has to do some shoveling because you really can't use a tractor to till them.

    3. LOL. Like when she built the kids' playhouse.

    4. Anon 8:45 Odd how these projects magically are completed without any pictures of who is actually doing the "grunt work".

    5. Like the popular misconception that Duggars (Jim Bob and the kids) built their house- clearly not the case per 16 Children and Moving In (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5T8Md4mLkc). The playhouse, moving Grandma Duggar's house, Austin and Joy's remodel, remodeling the house for Josh and Anna to live in, the house for Ben and Jessa as newlyweds, etc. The ongoing lack of transparency makes everything they say and have said suspect and fair game for questioning, sadly.

  19. I don't understand their gardening technique of piling up a huge mound of dirt and sticking plants into it but apparently it works as they get a good crop.

  20. Whatever happened to the building that used to be a tattoo parlor that Jana bought. Will that be turned into a fruit and vegetable store that Jana manages.

  21. It's called mound gardening and it's great for growing root vegetables such as carrots beets potatoes etc. You can google it. A great way to garden!
