Duggar Birthday Tradition

 Justin Duggar, November 2017

MarketPlace Grill is one of the Duggars' favorite places to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, first dates, and other milestones. Yesterday was Justin Duggar's golden birthday, and he chose to take part in a Duggar birthday tradition. Any guesses as to what that might be? (The picture above is a bit of a spoiler.)

As part of his 15th birthday celebration, Justin ordered the chocolate mess sundae at MarketPlace. Over the years, the Duggars have indulged in quite a few chocolate messes. Not only is it a Duggar favorite, but it's known throughout Arkansas as being one of the state's tastiest desserts. The glass is actually dipped in chocolate--what's not to love about that?

For those who have asked if the chocolate mess is "forced" on the Duggar kids or if they are "allowed" to choose a different means of celebration, we assure you that they are free to select a different restaurant. In fact, we have posted many photos of such birthday celebrates.

To see how Justin has changed this year, check out this photo of his 14th birthday chocolate mess:

Two weeks ago, Spurgeon Seewald celebrated his second birthday with his first taste of chocolate mess. (Good excuse for Jessa and Ben to order their favorite dessert...after giving Spurgeon a few bites, of course.)

Spurgeon enjoyed his taste, although his reaction was a bit subdued. How many choco-holics do we have out there who think they would enjoy this dessert?

  1. Count me in!🍫🍫🍫🍫I love chocolate! Lily and Ellie you need to try chocolate brownie cake. It's simply divine!
I'm going to have to make my own version of the chocolate mess because we won't get to Marketplace anytime soon.

    2. It does sound delicious. Where I live we don't have Marketplace (that I'm aware of).

  2. I wouldn't eat anything from a vat that the restaurant dipped dishes in all day long...

    1. They are made to order and they don't keep a vat of chocolate sitting all day long.

    2. @9:48 What's the difference between dipping serving utensils in it or clean dishes?

    3. Well, that didn't take too long! Ì love that Justin loved it, that's all that matters. ♡♡

    4. Have you ever checked the sanitation grades of the restaurants before you go to them? Quite eye-opening sometimes.

    5. Funny you should mention that, 10:31 because I checked this restaurant's health rating and I wouldn't want their silverware dipped into anything.

    6. In California, the sanitation grades are posted right on the front door.

    7. In NYC, sometimes they try to get away with disguising their B or C sanitation grade papers. They'll turn them into one of the letters in the name of their establishment. They'll stick other lettered papers like it around the grade paper in the window to spell out the name. Very deceiving. Very NYC!

  5. Just me, but I don't think he's changed all that much. I do think you can definitely tell the Justin and Joy are brother and sister though. :) Happy Birthday Justin!

    1. No, I don't think his face has changed drastically either. He was such a fun little boy. I miss seeing them all when they were younger. Wish TLC played reruns of the older episodes.

    1. Have you ever known a Duggar to turn down free anything? Even if it means they have to dress like a pirate or a cow.

    2. Well, that was kind of rude, 3:03.

    3. who said that it was free?

      Delete
    4. They've said it before, and Yelp reviews confirm it. Birthday day, it's free.

    5. They're free on your birthday. That has been the point of the Duggars always posting these pictures. Haven't you seen?

  9. Simply Scrumpicious! Count me in when ordering that dish!

  12. I'd like to try one just once (and how silly of people to think they "force" their children to eat them - really?).

    1. I don't think anyone thnks the Duggars force their children to eat Chocolate Messes. I think some posters may have wondered if the Duggars make all the children go to Marketplace Grill for their birthdays because let's face it, with 19 children, that's a lot birthdays close together. I think some may have thought that Michelle and Jim Bob make them all go to Marketplace Grill for convenience sake, so they wouldn't set a precedent of running all over to 21 different places for birthdays each year (including Jim Bob & Michelle's). I think they were questioning it because what are the odds that one place and one dessert is going to be the favorite of all 19 children? They may have missed other blog posts where a birthday was held at Chick-Fil-A or Cracker Barrel or Chuck-E-Cheese. It's not unusual for many parents to take their children out to the family's favorite restaurant on the child's birthday, rather than going to each child's favorite place on their respective birthday. My parents always allowed us to choose within reason and budget, but that may not be everyone else's normal.

  15. Happy Birthday Justin! My children always request brownie trifle for their birthdays. They have nicknamed it "goop."

  20. Happy Birthday Justin. I pray for this family, they are full of controversy, might be time to take a step back and reflect on what life's true meaning is all about. God Bless.

  23. I’m curious when did they start doing this as a tradition? In the past they’ve always taken the kids out for ice cream and jet them choose an event to do, such as indoor rock climbing, sky diving, indoor race car driving. Just wondering.

  24. I find it quite interesting how close the Duggar birthdays are to my own kids birthdays... Justin Nov. 15, 2002... my daughter Nov. 23,2002; Jackson May 23, 2004... my son Apr. 29, 2004; Johannah Oct. 11, 2005... my foster boy Oct. 19, 2005; Jennifer Aug 7, 2007... my foster girl June 29, 2007; Jordyn Dec. 18, 2008... my son Jan. 25, 2009! Interesting too, my sister had twins (boy/girl) Jan. 12, 2005 and the duggar twins (boy/girl) were born Jan. 12 as well (only a few years earlier!!! We are from NW Ontario... when our children were 6 years and under (the Christmas Michelle was in hospital with Josie) we made a trip South and actually stayed a night in Springdale Arkansas! We asked about the Duggars but nobody in the town would say a thing because we were obviously tourists!

  28. Justin looks very much like Jim Bob when he was younger. Jim Bob was only a couple of years older than Justin is now when he married Michelle. Look at some of their wedding pictures from 30 years ago.

  29. Happy Birthday, Justin! Miss so much seeing all the younger kids as they grow up. I do enjoy Counting On, but agree it's a little repetitious. This could easily be fixed, but I will watch the show no matter what, because I enjoy and appreciate all the Duggars.
