Won't be long before Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are empty-nesters! Okay, maybe it will be a little while still. Four of their 19 children are married, one is engaged and soon to be married, and another is in a courtship. Delete@ 11:32 I'm sorry, but you're wrong. I live in NJ where it's unheard of to get married right out of high school. At most high schools in my area, over 90% of students go to college. I'm a high school teacher and none of my students are getting married after graduation. They're all going to college and plan to become doctors, lawyers, military officers, film producers, and study abroad in Europe. Marriage and babies are thankfully the furthest thing from their minds, which is how it should be as they are only 17 or 18 years old.

ReplyDeleteI was told as a teenager that when you're physically next to someone of the opposite gender (standing, dancing), you should "leave room for the Lord." That doesn't seem to be the case here.

DeleteI'm happy for all the Digger kiddos. Just hope Joy takes it slow and enjoys this season and married life in the future for a while before kids. Love to see JINGER doing that.Before people freak out, I'm sure whether she is trying or not, it's nice to see couples grow together as two before expecting. She is going to make a great mom...they all will I think.

These two couples will probably be close, at least they are close in age. Kendra and Joy are close in age. Joseph and Austin are close in age.

ReplyDeleteI was on many dates like that in my teens, where one couple "chaperoned" the other. It doesn't really work the way the parents might hope it does.

I think parents should be a part of the relationship, but these are right in the middle of it! Marriage is a blending of two into one - and that can't happen with Mom and Dad smack in the middle. The couples need their own time to bond and speak privately. I would not want to discuss serious and personal questions with my parents listening in. They should be able to have some privacy to discuss their future; i.e. How many children they want, what their personal beliefs and dreams are. They should be able to say they love each other without the awkwardness of turning to see your parents sitting right next to you, or the alert on your iPhone that your message has been read. They should trust that they've taught their children well and they will be godly and moral in the thoughts, words, and actions. That doesn't mean they can't sin. But that can happen with or without parents. I think the daughters should especially be respected...Not treated as owned cattle. They should be able to discuss things for themselves. No matter how much the parents are involved, they are their own people with different ideas and feelings. They aren't their parents. It must be awkward to go from being chaperoned, guarded by your parents, and barely able to hold hands with your boyfriend, to all the responsibility, intimacy, and independence of marriage. I think the Duggar parents should still be involved, but should also give their children some space to learn for themselves. How can their learn and live life if they are never given the chance?
