Big Sandy Highlight Reel

Did you see the photos we posted of the Duggars' time at the annual homeschool/family conference in Big Sandy, Texas, last week? The Institute in Basic Life Principles just released a highlight reel, which we have posted below. Take a look, and let us know which of the Duggars or their significant others you see.

We have also embedded the video montage from last year's conference, which the Duggars also attended.

  1. It looks like everyone had a nice time. I saw some Duggars and Bates. I also thought I saw some familiar faces of families I know.

  2. It's certainly a beautiful setting, but I can't help but notice that it looks like it's a lot more fun to be a boy at that conference than it is to be a girl there.

  3. So the boys get to do all the exciting stuff like rock wall climbing and canoeing and the girls get...arts and crafts and singing songs, big whoop! Why do they make such a difference between the sexes, it is just so wrong. I am sure that many of the girls would much prefer to be outside running around and trying these activities than stuck inside, I know my daughter would and she would want to know why she couldn't. Participating in such activities does not make the girls less feminine, it would promote their health and fitness and build self confidence. It is such a shame these girls are denied the same opportunities as the boys just because they are girls.

    2. I bet alot of girls would like to canoe and do archery, etc.etc.etc. I know I loved summer camp, I can't imagine being cooped up indoors while the boys had all the fun, doesn't seem fair at all.

    3. Because ultimately there is a big difference between the sexes? Nothing wrong with letting girls be girls and boys be boys. They aren't the Kardashians you know

    4. Anon @ 8.11 Yes there are differences between the sexes but none that would stop the girls from doing and enjoying the same activities as the boys. At least the kadrashians would allow their girls to canoe and rock wall climb, and this is someone who cant stand the Kardashians defending them!

    5. 8:11 AM -- Girls can be girls with running, climbing, and doing all the fun stuff like the boys do!

    6. My annual summer Church camp had specific classes for girls and boys, but they also had mixed classes for archery, riflery, horseback riding, swimming, etc. You can be a young lady and do all of those things, and do them well (and sometimes better than a boy-shocking, I know). I'm not a feminist by any means and I fully support Biblical womanhood (as in, according to the Bible not IBLP's or anyone else's interpretation). It is wrong when one man determines what Biblical femininity looks like, produces a curriculum for families imposing that, and said people proceed to mold their daughters in the image that man envisioned (not God). There's nothing wrong with a girl who enjoys the outdoors.

    7. "' nothing wrong with letting girls be girls and boys be boys?!?!?'" So you are saying only boys can be archers or go canoeing? Climb a rock wall? Only girls can cook? Or sew? Or do crafts?!?!?! That is total hogwash! As a young girl, I shot rifles, climbed trees, swam and participated in track. It was what As a girl, I wanted to do. It doesn't look like there was much CHOICE at that conference. .if you were a girl, you DIDN'T. That, I do not agree with.

    8. The Kardashians? Huh? What do they have to do with anything? They aren't known for camping or canoing or doing archery?

But lots of girls like to do that sort of stuff! I canoed a lot when I was a kid and loved it. I also would have really enjoyed to do archery. Girls need physical activities as much as boys. Heck, Joy-Anna Duggar is a perfect example. Remember her birthday party one year was rock climbing? Nothing wrong at all with girls liking that stuff. In the same way, I know lots of boys that like arts and rafts - my older son could sit for hours coloring and drawing.

There are differences between boys and girls, but they aren't so pronounced that the types of activities they are allowed to do have to be limited to their sex.

    9. Camp is camp and conference is conference! Conference is for learning and making friends.
Camp is activities, exercise, sports, etc that both genders can participate in. If you watch the ALERT FAMILY CAMP videos you would see!!

    11. Anon @ 12:23 some Duggar fans seem obsessed by them, not sure why but they get mentioned from time to time????

  4. It appears from the Big Sandy video that the activities are pretty much gender specific, even the assemblies look to be. Are there some rules about this? If so, I am curious as to the rationale behind it. My own kids would never have bought into this. Girls have outdoor/active interests, too, just as boys enjoy creative pursuits.

    1. We don't know if the girls got to do anything judging by these videos. None of us was there.

    2. 10:22- If IBLP uses this slideshow for promotional reasons, it's odd they would show only gender specific activities if they really do offer the same outdoor activities for the girls. It does not leave a good impression.

    3. I think so too.

    4. I was there. It is VERY fun for both girls and boys! Very few of the young ladies their have been trained to teach rappeling, archery, canoeing, etc. Therefore men would be leading the little girls in these activities which could be inappropriate. I would imagine that most parents of the young girls wouldn't like that much...

    5. 8:08- I have male friends who are P.E. instructors in an elementary school. I can assure you, they are perfectly able to lead many classes of boys AND girls in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities without problems.

    6. I'm female and a man( not Dad or brother) taught me to water ski when I was a teenager. My Dad asked him to help as he was a good friend and a bit more patient. We spent hours in the water..in normal bathing suits..as I'm not athletically inclined. I never was very good, but this grown man had such patience, nothing untoward. I have fond memories. Can't imagine missing out because of gender roles. So sad.

    2. You did NOT see Carlin! Carlin wasn't there. I was. Perhaps you mean Callie or one of the other girls, but Josie, Carlin, and Tori weren't there. I'm not sure about Katie though...

    3. I believe Anonymous 1.05 PM is talking about seeing Carlin in the 2016 promotional video at 12:34.

Is that Kendra I'm seeing approx. 2 mins and 4 mins into the 2016 video?

    2. More gossipers lol

    3. Anon @7:05 do you have a reliable source of such a claim? Just wondering, as I'm sure the some of Australian readers of this blog would know for sure.

    4. How is it gossiping when you're talking about things that have made newspaper headlines?

      Delete
    5. I'm not that person, but I saw a story about them closing the building or losing it to a sale (I forget) online recently. It was not good news, I do remember that. Try googling it. It should still be online. It's not gossip, it made the news.

    6. There has been nothing that says it was shut down. The website would have mentioned it and it would have been in the local news.

    7. Just google it, folks. It's cool to do your own research, so you know what's fact and what's fiction. I googled and found it. :)

    1. The boys seem to have more fun than the girls though!! Not fair!!

    2. It definitely looks like there are boy-approved and girl-approved activities. This is unfortunate, because not everyone enjoys the same things. Many girls like active/outdoor sports and some boys prefer creative/hands-on hobbies.

    3. The boys do not have more fun than the girls!! I know from experience. It is a different type of fun, but most little girls would rather do crafts than crawl in the mud and do pushups.. just saying.
It's not a camp for exercise or for fun. It's for drawing near to the Lord. Yes, they do make it fun, but that's not what it is about.

  8. Looks like fun.

  9. I would definitely of like to at least have a go at some of the "boy" activities as well as the girl ones if I went even though I'm a girl

    1. Girls are welcome to canoe, rappel, do archery, etc. At the family CAMP. Conference is about your relationship with God, camp is more activities focused.

  10. A real question here: What is some of the Duggar children just don't line the conference and don't want to go or participate if made to go? Are they forced to participate by their parents? It's not likely that absolutely every child who attends enjoys it or wants to be there. What would the Duggar parents do?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Obviously they wouldn't leave them home in another state. They have their RV on site so the kids can probably just stay in it if they don't want to participate. Some places provide alternate activities for those who physically can't participate, so maybe they could do those instead. All of the kids looked like they were having a good time!

      Delete
    2. Although the focus is on the Lord, they make it fun for all children. They have crafts, games, skits, illustrative lessons, and making friends. I don't believe that any of them are forced, but I think the parents would probably send their child to classes anyway and hope that they learn the importance of their relationship with God and what the conference can do for them.

  11. Oh my gosh.... It looks like such a boring conference for girls! Why don't they let girls do the fun things? The girls should atleast have the option of participating in all those fun outdoor activities. I'd never drag my daughter to something where she wasn't allowed to do certain activities simply because of her gender! Iblp needs to get a clue if they hope that these conferences will continue to draw families for years to come.

  12. Aw, seeing this picture makes me sad for Jana. I know she probably works very hard at being content with singleness, but she'd make a great wife and mom (which seems to be her desire).

  13. We don't see eye to eye. Yet y'all all set back and judge this family. Look at Hollywood. It is full of lying cheating no good people. Yet you judge these people for there belief. Who care no matter if you are a Christian or not we are human. We all make mistakes. It's called life. Don't judge them when you are setting back doing the same thing. You are no better then they are not am I. Get over yourself.
