Less than one week after announcing Joy-Anna Duggar's engagement, the Duggars have more exciting news to share. Another Duggar courtship has begun! This time, it's one of the Duggar brothers. Congratulations to Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwell!
Joseph made it official yesterday (March 7th) while on a walk with Kendra in a field near the house where he was born. He gave her a promise ring to symbolize his commitment. Hear from the couple in the video below.

That is one confusing video. She's excited for side hugs and texting, and he's giving her some kind of "token" that's "a little bit different" than what his siblings have done? I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteI thought The side hugs comment was awkward too. These videos are always a little strange too since they often look at each other instead of the camera. Happy that a Duggar boy is finally in a relationship.
DeleteHis siblings haven't done promise rings with courtship before, so the fact that he gave her one is different. I agree, though, that her comment about being excited about the side hugs was one of the stranger comments I've heard.
DeleteWhat is he talking about with that token that's different? Does he mean some sort of gesture or action he's done for her or is going to do? But the other kids also did the side hugs and hand holding. I don't know what he means by token. Confusing!
DeleteShe is just excited that months after liking each other, they can take things to the next step. With them that means side hugs and texting. She is looking forward to getting to know him even better. I think it is smart on their parents' part to encourage their kids to get to know the people they are interested in without physical contact. Too many times people get physical but don't really know each other's hearts. Those are the relationships that don't usually last the test of time.

He gave her a "promise ring." That's the token he was talking about. I had to back up the video twice to catch it because TLC added that funky music so loud that it almost drowns them both out. It would be easier to understand without the music.

That music makes it nearly impossible to hear either of them! Especially soft-spoken Kendra.

DeleteI actually felt like her being excited for side hugs and texting is 100% normal. She is a teenager. If they were not religious, you could sub "side hugs" for things like "holding hands" and "kissing." She is excited to have more freedom to get to know him, which is sweet and is how a teenage girl should act when there is a boy that she likes. She just hasn't been schooled in how to interview yet, but I am sure she will soon be saying "season of life," "whenever I did this...," "walking this path," "his Godly heart," "excited for what God has planned," etc. in no time.

"Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Just remember, even an onion looks good coated like a caramel apple. ;) Doesn't mean it's anything you'd really want.

DeleteDo you not watch the show? Many of the Duggar kids have their own businesses, and have jobs. Joseph works for the fire department. Some of the Duggar kids flip houses, buy cars at auction and sell them. Etc. Etc. They don't Just sit around the house all day doing nothing.

DeleteIt's a perfectly valid question for anyone in a courtship. I don't recall them ever saying what exactly Joe does. Was he one of the ones giving that lesson about how to back up a truck? I forget. So yes, what does he do and how will he afford a wife? And what about Kendra? Does she work? Also a valid question.

In all fairness, waiting in line during check-out, I picked up and leafed through the People magazine featuring Jessa and Ben and the Henry's birth. The amount of people provocatively dressed (with open tops split to the waist among other things more indecent to mention) was appalling. We're extremely disappointed that we bought the Duggar girls' book for our daughter, as is she. As Christians, the hypocrisy is inexcusable. The Duggars will not allow that magazine in their house because it has the potential to corrupt their children, but they want it in other people's homes so they can make money. They do not care if morally corrupts others. How is that loving your neighbor? Would Jesus do that? NO. If you want to sell your lives for public consumption, that's your choice, but leave Jesus out of it. He is neither honored or glorified by that kind of behavior. 2 Corinthians 7:1 "Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God."

ReplyDeleteGood for them and congratulations. Isn't he the one whose a paramedic/fireman and also has his own business (can't remember what though). I'm waiting for Jana (the oldest daughter) to begin courting!
ReplyDeleteA few of the older children took the paramedic training. Actually only saw John-David work at it; the episode Josie had her major seizure. I remember the girls going to great lengths to get skirts made so they wouldn't have to wear the required pants but nothing else was ever shown on the show. If it was a paid job I don't know but I'm pretty sure it was described as a volunteer department. I think that maybe it was a case of a couple of them were interested in this field and the rest were chosen to be accountability buddies. The only job I have seen Joe do is when a pack of Duggar boys head out to the auto auctions and buy cars to flip. Working for his dad is just working for his keep in my opinion.
DeleteHow much industry is in that part of Arkansas? What else can young men without any formal training or college degree do there? Is the economy strong enough to support every car and house flipper the Duggars can supply? It seems opportunities there would at some point get very limited.

Anna was very timid at first too, but grew very confident when being interviewed, and the same will happen with Kendra in time. I think she's snagged one of the sweetest Duggar boys. (derick & ben have also become more confident in front of the camera). anna, has totally blossomed as a women over the past 8 years. We've gotten used to the courtships with the duggar girls & have watched them grow up so we're more used to the way the girls act in front of the cameras. joe is much shyer than some of the other duggar boys so i wouldnt be surprised if kendra is also on the shyer side too.

DeleteHonestly, it is more strange not to look at the person who is talking. I always think it is rude to look elsewhere when people are talking. We know what they look like. They don't have to stare into the camera the whole time.
DeleteThey're focusing on the oter person's face because they're waiting to say their next line-it's called timing. That's why their eyes repeatedly dart to the other person's eyes, then to their mouth, repeatedly while the other person is speaking. It's normally not so obvious with well-seasoned professional actors, they usually "cue" to a particular word or phrase (not a slam to the Duggars acting ability, just explaining from a staging standpoint). Because they're concentrating (i.e."looking too long and too often),it "reads"as awkward, unnatural, and very contrived. Apparently they've been coached to be "bright and vivacious" (happy countenance) which doesn't help. The effect is overly energetic often when the conversation doesn't merit it, so it "reads" as discordant (out of sync, not genuine emotion). Instead of a normal, relaxed conversation between the two people WITH the viewers (as to include them), it's noticeably awkward.

ReplyDeleteIt sounds like they have known each for some time and Austin is in the same circle of friends. That means it will probably be a short courtship and engagement like Joy and Austin's.
ReplyDeleteI believe Joe said they have been talking for about 6 months, whereas Joy and Austin have been friends for 5 years. Looks like a promising match, but hope they have a longer courtship. There's no hurry, she is only 18. That is old enough, but still no need to hurry. Enjoy this stage of getting to know each other for awhile.

First commitment to stay pure for each other and work towards marriage. It also reflects being unavailable to others interested in you.
Often you would receive young before graduation and that Ring would be swapped out for an engagement ring near college graduation.

What I am annoyed at is the fact that someone is clearly lying about it only happening "yesterday" since the media also had wind of it the very same day and done interviews down the hour. The "witholding" of information annoys many of us who credit your family with bringing us to Christ, but we can't take your example on this as it is clearly staged and not right. If TLC are making you with hold information, tell them it is wrong. Just like their decision to do so many re-runs last season, I certainly stopped watching multiple episodes as the were repeats and I am sure others have too from their comments. God Bless x

DeleteOr maybe - just maybe - since Joseph knew when he was going to ask her, he let TLC and People know ahead of time? When we don't know the whole story, it's best not to just assume people are lying.
DeleteIt doesn't take much for news to spread. A lot of things happen that get spread quickly across social media and the news. The news does generally report things that have just happened that day (that is why there are nightly news programs-to report what happened that day).
DeleteIt's possible that they filmed the interview the day after the courtship proposal, but then waited to release the video until after the People magazine announcement. In that case, the proposal may not have happened the day before the announcement, but rather the day before the interview.

DeleteExciting and fun news yet so many 'Anonymous' haters and negative people - WHY! Why in the world come to a Duggar fan site when you obviously dislike and some right out hate this wonderful family?! Something as innocent as two young people entering a courtship and announcing it via video and it is picked apart and snide comments made - sad that you have nothing better to do with your lives.

DeleteThe Duggars can't keep anything hush-hush. Either they inadvertently give things away by posting a picture that shows something they didn't mean to, or else they straight out sell their stories. So if Jana is with someone, the truth will come out somewhere, somehow. Someone will catch them together and post the picture.
DeleteThey, too, didn't just meet. She's been hanging around this family for months now. They were given permission to speak to each other, only with others present, so how could they have any idea what each other is about other than this ministry stuff? There are many, many other things in life, all of which can be and are Godly, that just isn't "ministry". Where to they stand on these things? They really have no idea. To declare marital intent to a stranger is sad for these two very young people who hardly know who THEY are themselves yet.

ReplyDeleteabout the promise ring, what i've learned from watching the bates: when a girl becomes of a certain age, the parents give her a 'promise' ring to remind themselves to save themselves for the one god has planned for them. they wear it on the right hand & take it off on their wedding day. (none of the boys are given any 'tokens'. even though the bates have shown some of their girls getting their rings, not all christian families do this. (in fact, i was given a promise ring by my husband, which i wore in addition to my engagement ring and wedding band & we were of different religions.) with a wedding proposal, jewelry is always involved but you usually dont see anything with the courtship! i think this is awesome and a sweet gesture. hope the other duggars boys do something similar if their intendeds family doesnt already do it. i am so happy & excited for joseph and cannot wait to watch their courtship blossom!
ReplyDeleteIn the Bates Family, the daughters are given a "purity" ring, rather than a promise ring. Upon entering a courtship, usually the guys give a heart necklace, but Joseph decided to do something different and gave Kendra a promise ring (not "purity" ring)
Delete8:20 am....I think you're confusing a "promise" ring with a "purity" ring. The Bates give their daughters what is called a "purity" ring at a certain age. The purity rings symbolizes the girl will remain pure until marriage. Actually, I'm watching The Bates right now! A few weeks ago the parents took Josie Bates to dinner and gave her her purity ring.
DeleteA promise ring is what Joe Duggar gave Kendra, and what you say your husband gave you. I got one too, many, many moons ago. That is quite different than a purity ring. A promise ring usually means the man intends to take the relationship to the next level sometime in the future.
As if these girls wouldn't remain "pure" until marriage even if they didn't have a ring for it.
