Duggars & Johnny Jump Ups

Are you familiar with the johnny jump up? Those who are long-time fans of the Duggars have probably spotted one or two on the family's show or in throwback pictures. Grand-Duggar Spurgeon Seewald, who just passed his six-month milestone, appears to be quite fond of his Graco Bumper Jumper.

Just a couple months ago, we shared this photo of Spurgeon's cousin Israel Dillard, also known as "Izzy," in his own Graco Bumper Jumper.

The Duggars' love of johnny jump ups started decades ago, when Jim Bob and Michelle had a much smaller family. Twins Jana and John-David Duggar spent time in identical johnny jump ups back in the early '90s.

    2. Yes he could be comfier, if he were in his bed. I have yet to see a picture from this family where their babies are sleeping in cribs. And yes, I've raised children so I know about falling asleep in odd places. But as a mother, I always watched for those first signs of sleepiness and then we headed to the rocker together if needed or else straight to the crib. It's not hard to know when your child needs to take a nap, and the crib is the safest place to do that.

    3. How lovely that you were such a nurturing mother. However it would be nice if, as a mother, you and others who come on social media to critique and judge how others parent their children would use some of that nurturing nature to support each other rather than cut each other down.

    4. I wouldn't blame any mother for commenting on the pictures the Duggars have posted. Most of the pictures are downright scary!

  2. The Duggar grandchildren are adorable! I wanted to let you know that I recently learned from a chiropractor that specializes in children (Dr. Jim Bob Haggerton -- Texas) that babies shouldn't be put in jumpers/high chairs/bumbo seats until they can sit by themselves on the floor. Otherwise I guess they are sitting on their tailbone and not really supporting their body weight. I have three little ones including a 4 month old and never knew this! I follow Dr. Jim Bob on Facebook and Periscope because he has wonderful videos and posts about health, The Father, (and essential oils). Awesome info...

    1. Common sense is key. If you put your child in a jumper, bouncy saucer, play pen, car seat sitting on the floor etc for 15 minutes a couple times a day while you have a shower or prepare food, that keeps them safe if you don't have another person around to help you. Keeping a child confined for long periods inhibits their motor skills for sure. Ideal is having lots of people around to take turns supervising the children playing in a wide open space with minimal fancy toys to allow for creativity. However, in the real world, mom is often by herself and wants to keep the child safe while she does some necessary things.

  4. I love the pictures you shared. It is such fun seeing the Dugger kids in them and it brought back great memories. Our children loved the Johnny Jump-up, particularly our son. He would laugh constantly and jump around in a frenzy. I think it gives little ones a sense of freedom before they actually begin to walk. It doesn't seem to matter to them that, even though they are moving, they are not really going anywhere. It just matters that they are moving of their own volition. I also think it strengthens their legs to prepare them for walking. Thank you for the adorable pictures and for helping to revive our own treasured memories. I'm so glad some toys and activities don't go out of style.

    1. Watch for it...wait for it ... watch for it... There is always at least one wet blanket who posts on this blog; not always the same person but always someone - the seat isn't safe; don't lay him on the couch, one child needs to be checked for mental development; he shouldn't be allowed to dance to the church music; don't use the baby carrier that way, etc. Ease up!!! The Duggars have raised many children over the years and made good decisions. The next generation has great role models. Let them be parents without your criticisms.

  9. Up here (Canada) they are called Jolly Jumpers and yes, my kids and my grandkids have all used them and loved them. They are great for exercising those leg muscles and for letting the babies see Momma if she is working close by.

  12. My son loves his Johnny jump up!
I don't want to see him grow out of it!

  13. Cute!

One writer is correct, if the baby can sit up or just pulling up they don't cause compression and they build muscle. They also must be adjusted for growth to always land feet flat not to roll ankles.

Great you shared such adorable memories with us. Thanks

  15. Spurgeon reminds me a lot of Grandpa Jim Bob, it will be precious to see how much he takes on his parents and grandparent facial features. God bless.

  16. I used to work in an infant daycare, and we used Johnny Jump-ups to do foot paintings with our babies as gifts for their parents. We'd have them jump on a tray of finger paints first, and as we slid the tray out from under their feet, we'd slide the paper in it's place, the baby would jump up and down, and make a painting to take home. They also make wonderful gifts for grandparents.
If any of you do this, you have to be really quick slipping the paper under the baby's feet, otherwise you end up with quite a mess.

  17. Those Johnny jump ups were recalled back in February of this year Because the straps can brake and fall.

  18. Good grief, every SINGLE time a Duggar or Bates posts something about their children they're always criticized by people on social media!! They aren't commenting on followers pictures saying how "unsafe" their children are?? Get a life ...

  19. I have never heard of a johnny jump-up before. Here in Canada we have the jolly jumper which was first produced in 1910 by Susan Olivia Poole. It is the original and a Canadian invention.
