Michelle: 'We Thank God For You'

Jason Duggar celebrated his 16th birthday with an ice cream party at Family Camp in Big Sandy, Texas. Although they have 19 children, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar take time to make each of their kids feel special. Check out their YouTube birthday wishes:

Birthday Message from Jim Bob Duggar, Michelle Duggar, and Jinger Duggar

Birthday Message from Jim Bob Duggar and Pastor Jeremy Vuolo

  1. I truly don't want to come across as negative, but in light of the fact JimBob has been outright militant about "no kissing" before marriage--I found his perceived joke about Jason turning 16 and never been kissed actually belittling. Since JB and Michelle adhere to such strict courting rules why would JB mock his son for following them? I don't understand this one. But...Happy Birthday to Jason.

    1. Yeah.. Michelle looked surprised and uncomfortable with that. I have found JimBob to be inappropriate on several occasions regarding "joking" about what his kids can/can't do--for example I'm sure we all have uncomfortable memories of the putt-putt golf course episode!

    2. Yeah, totally agree. Surely Jim Bob should be proud of his son for following their courtship rules and not having kissed anyone. It does come across as very belittling and frankly I find it hurtful, even if it was intended as a joke. It´s hard to remain pure and Jason should be encouraged, not made fun of.

    3. That's the first thing that came to mind for me too. I think he tries to be funny, but something happens & it turns embarrassing. And I loves Michelle face when he does that sort of thing. It's like "REALLY?" Love her <3

    4. The way Jim Bob jokes about those things in front of the kids is disrespectful and potentially dangerous. Hearing these kinds of things from parents makes any kid squirm, let alone a Duggar.

Equally disturbing were all the interviews before the girls got married, when he talked about what he thought the girls were "looking forward to" about married life. This should not be any father's business, and he should not be speaking of it, especially not on camera.

    5. I agree about the 16 and never been kissed. And the way Jim Bob talked during that mini gold episode was just so inappropriate.

      Delete
    6. I couldn't find the "never been kissed"part. Did they remove it? Wish Jim Bob would stop with the awkward comments to his children in public. Doesn't he understand it is embarrassing and mostly inappropriate?

      Delete
    7. Why is Jim Bob wearing a name tag on his own property?

      Delete
    8. Oh Jim Bob, was that really necessary? Please show your son some respect instead of embarrassing him.

      Delete
    9. Yeah, I found it uncomfortable too. First of all, why would you mock your own son, second of all, especially with their very strict rules...?

      Delete
    10. I agree, that birthday message was hurtful.

      Delete
    11. They weren't on their own property, 5:42am. They were in Texas for a conference. Hope that explains the tags for you.

    12. @Annonymous 7:32 pm...completely agree with you. I actually turned off the episode when JimBob and Michelle were "teaching" Ben and Jessa to kiss because I didn't find it appropriate for my daughters!! I had to turn off the Duggars!! Between that and the above mentioned "putt-putt" episode ( poor Ben and Jessa were the receipients of that too) I admit I was appalled.

    13. Honestly... I don't know why people are making a big deal about it. My mom has said "sixteen and never been kissed" before to my kids. She was just playing around. We have strict views on kissing as well. People can tease their own children. It wasn't belittling or mocking.

They started doing little videos for their kids' birthdays years ago. They do it for all of them, so at this point it would be inconsiderate to just stop. Which kid's birthday do you decide to skip? Their kids will be able to look back on those videos and remember their different birthday celebrations. It is neat way to keep those memories alive.

      Delete
    14. I totally agree. He was probably joking, but considering their values about courting and not kissing before marriage, don't understand why he had to say that?

      Delete
    15. Sweet 16 never... Is so well known and typical to say so please don't parent bash and dishonour Js dad!

      Delete
    16. I disagree with all the above comments saying Jason's father was disrespectful and embarrassing to Jason. His wonderful father said what all 16 year olds hear on their birthday, from lots of people.

      Delete
    17. To the person saying they keep the videos as memories: why posting them then? Almost every family since the age of VHS makes videos, but there's no need to publish them, nor interest.

      Delete
  2. The family should wish him a happy birthday and express their love in person, not on an internet video. The only reason to post a birthday greeting to a member of your family (including your 1-year-old baby) in a public manner is for self-serving publicity. Perhaps a more honest message would be, "happy birthday, we love you, and we are going to use your birthday as an opportunity for publicity and promoting our struggling reality tv brand."

    1. The video messages are always odd, and then the fact that you share something so personal, like it's Internet news... I would not be happy if my family did this to me.

      Delete
    2. I couldn't agree more!! Very well said.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, I don't see the purpose either. Especially since they're together, they're celebrating him in person.

      Delete
    4. Say heartfelt things in a private audience with your children. It'll be more meaningful to them. Do you want them to remember that on every birthday, you made them stand before the camera to listen to you, so the whole world could watch? How does that make you feel special and not another publicity or marketing tool?

      Delete
  3. I just don't understand why they do this. I can see if they did something like this for Jill and Derrick because they are so far away. But when you live in the same house with a child who does not have a Facebook account, why post a video saying Happy Birthday and why they are special to you? They do this for their little ones too. Example: posting a video message or even a written post to Josie about why she is special and wishing her a happy birthday. And then there are all the fans that respond with bday wishes, as if they will ever see them. I know a lot of people besides the Duggars do this, but it is a huge "look at me and what I made" post seeking recognition and praise that is saturated with selfish edification. It just isn't sincere and it is becoming quite obvious the Duggars are seeking praise and affirmation from a world they claim to they don't want to be of.

    1. I agree. It's like they've turned from a family into an impersonal corporation.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. Couldn't have said it better myself.

      Delete
    3. It is all about money and fame. Religion has become a lesser priority for this family- so sad.
If the fans would stop thinking of their own personal entertainment, they would know they have the power to influence this large family to leave television and lead a quieter, happier, healthier life , away from all heartache, pain and criticism. Yes, they would have to each earn a proper living. ....the girls included.
This is all so harmful to the children. Don't any of the fans care?..

      Delete
    4. Anonymous, Do missionary parents care less for their children if they are willing to risk their lives in order to reach the lost? The Duggars have repeatedly stated that they are taking part in this show out of their desire to serve the Lord. We will be persecuted as we walk counter culture no matter how we choose to serve. Each of us must choose whether to obey our individual call regardless of the harsh criticism we receive...whether the criticism comes from the world or even worse, from the judgment within the body. Considering the criticism that the Duggars have endured all throughout the many years in the spotlight, I doubt that the fan's desire to continue watching is the fuel that guides the Duggars. The Duggars will continue with the show until they believe that the Lord has called them on to do other things.

  8. why do not of the girls wear jeans or pants?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Probably what to show of the legs. I think they should were pants they would look better than dress all the time.

      Delete
    2. They don't wear pants based on one Scripture that says women should not wear men's clothing. I find it interesting that when that was written the men wore tunics--dresses. But..if it makes them feel holier not to wear a pair of jeans what difference does it make?

      Delete
    3. They believe that for them, skirts are more modest.

      Delete
    4. A skirt instead of pants is never going to change what a guy thinks when he sees a girl.

      Delete
    5. I find it interesting that they don't wear pants to uphold that scripture verse, yet Michelle wears a men's watch. But I guess it's all up to interpretation. Though I do agree that in Biblical times, men wore tunics and robes, not pants. History is so neat to study.

  11. Happy bday Jason!
I hope you had a great day!
but why do your parents post you a bday message on youtube when they are right there with you????? since you are not allowed on social media or have a lot of internet access you will never see it (unless you are able to read this blog or be on FB)
I really wish your family would take all their social media and turn it to private, get off the TV and start "healing" or "walking through" hard times privately. whenever this storm blows over I am sure all of your fans would LOVE another dugger book that details how this family handled the situations and how they clung to faith and family to heal, forgive and move on....
I'm sure many people would buy it and be helped through your familys tribulations and I sure yall would be able to give lots of advice----
but get out of the spot light for a while, just focus on your family first, THEN write a book, start speaking engagements, etc once things have blown over a bit!

  14. Sixteen is NOT a man, Jim-Bob! You can't vote, you can't serve your country, you can't sign contracts, you can't get married in Arkansas, and you can't toast yourself on your big day. It's not even a bar mitzvah they're talking about. It's a teenager's birthday.

  16. I think it's ridiculous how she encourages her daughters to have as many children as they want and not have an education. Michelle is very sexist, and sexism have no place in the church of God. It's very upsetting.

  17. It's very disappointing to see this blog allow such hateful comments to be posted. I think that if someone doesn't have something positive or uplifting to say, they should frequent (and comment) other places. However, these hurtful and pointless comments should be deleted.

    3. The comments are not hurtful or hateful. You want everyone to accept whatever the Duggars say or do as praiseworthy. That is very troubling. This is not a courty where dissenting views are not allowed.

      Delete
    4. Every comment on this blog makes me think, both "negative" and "positive."

I have a feeling a lot of the negatives are indeed tossed out & never get shown, so I don't know why all the complaints.

  19. Happy Birthday.. Jason.. 16 ! wow we grow up fast. AS the Pastor said, grow close to The Lord.. And he will direct your paths. As for all those that have commented about them doing this open to the public-- we need to learn how to live a Christ like way. They are showing all the love of God And that our Birthdays are a celebration with families but not a way to lead into other things of life. Raise up a child in the way he should grow... and when he grows old he will not depart. the scriptures say. All their children are taught this way.. And they grow up and go out into this world full of evil and like many kids make wrong choices.. but they have a strong foundation and find their way back to the way they were raised. Just watch and listen and see that their way is the right way.. Turn your life to Christ.. Do what the Pastor told Jason.. then you might understand once the Holy Spirit in fills you.

  20. Love the Duggars! My family appreciates the fact that they share videos like this with us fans. Especially with TLC not allowing all of the family on the new show. We miss seeing them ALL. 22. Obviously, as others have pointed out, these videos were not for their son but for the public. If Jim Bob wants to preach and spread his views that is his business. But he can do that without using his family.

I wonder,do the Duggars think that the public will not see through. They are using social media to keep their brand in the public, for montary reasons.

They are trying to keep interest in their show. But the Duggars brand is oversatuated. And increasingly people are questioning their motives.

  27. Speaking of joking around, that wasn't very nice of Michelle to "warn" other drivers in her area, either. Don't you trust your own child, especially when you've taught them to drive yourself? That part fell very flat, too, like the kissing joke.

  28. Happy Birthday!, Jason. God bless you real good.

  29. Personally, I have found that my walk with the Lord has benefited from the Duggar's transparency, the grace with which they have handled trials and loss and even from their humility in the face of disgrace. They continue to love the Lord, to offer the best that they have to the Lord and to repeatedly state that they are not perfect. They learn from their mistakes along the way as we all do. I can imagine that most of us would be unpleasantly surprised at the things that actually come out of our mouth if a camera were in front of us...eventually, the tongue betrays us all. I have never heard Michelle or JB intentionally criticize or demean with cruel intent. Whatever their flaws may be, they are genuinely loving, patient and generous parents.

  40. You people are so vile and quick to judge it's unbelievable.
People leave video messages so they have something to treasure later in life. People used to write cards but posting a video is the American way now.
How wonderful that Jason will have a permanent record with moving pics and kind words when his parents are gone.

I found the message to be a loving tribute from his Parents of how grateful they are to have this young man as a son and how proud they are of him as a young man and a Christian.
Jim Bob's comment of" sweet 16 and never been kissed" Is an old fashioned teasing thing said by millions.
Jib Bob teases his kids a lot. It was meant as playful and fun and you are the ones who make it innapropriate with your innuendo.

Happy Birthday Jason..Sweet 16 and never been kissed..good for you..it happens too soon anyway.
