Joyful Joy

Sorry y'all! We had this post ready to go early this morning and forgot to push the "Publish" button. Oh well, better late than never, right?

Can Joy-Anna Duggar hold her own in the kitchen? In the following video, she and friends Sierra and Holly get together to bake sugar cookies for an upcoming surprise baby shower, as seen on Tuesday's episode of Jill & Jessa: Counting On.

The gals also explain why they include men and children in their baby showers, and Joy's family shares their thoughts on her personality.

  1. Again this video shows error and won't play.

  2. Holds her own in the kitchen? Let's see, we saw her unwrap a stick of butter and push the dough around on a cookie sheet with a rolling pin. She didn't say a word and stayed in the background the whole time while Sierra did all the talking. Hummmmm.

  3. what are her special interests and talents?

  4. What does Sierra mean by sit in a circle and stare at each other?

    1. I agree, what a terrible thing to say; as if women together don't have much to say to each other. They should have loads of topics of conversation other than babies, baking, housekeeping, prayer, surely?????? - so depressing to hear this.

  5. Sugar cookies are the easiest cookies to make. I was cringing when I watched the clip. So, joy can unwrap a stick of butter and roll out cookie dough. That does not make her a Baker.

Plus, from what I can see, Sierra was doing all the talking and actual mixing. Joy looked unconfortable, it was obviously staged. And really Sierra cannot roll out cookie dough? And does not know you should not stick a spatual in a blender? Either she is not so bright or it was staged.

I hope Sierra was paid for her appearance on the show.

  6. I don't know what kinds of baby showers Sierra's been attending. I've never been to one where you just "sit in a circle and stare." Showers with all women aren't stressful. We can girl-talk about wedding or baby things that men would be bored or embarrassed to hear!

    1. I think it depends on what sort of "party" you prefer. Sierra's like me, in that I'm not really into talking about a bunch of girly stuff most of the time. While there's certainly nothing wrong with just women attending, I like "mixed-company" parties much better!

  7. "Everybody just sits in a circle and stares at each other"...What kind of baby showers has Sierra been to?! lol I've never experienced an awkward baby shower before, whether it was just women or not!

  8. Sierra the Party Planner doesn't know how to scrape down the bowl of a KitchenAid stand mixer?

    1. Party Planner doesn't necessarily equal Chef. Or even someone who cooks at all.

  9. Joy has nothing to say.

  11. Please...Sierra...stop. Throwing a baby shower is not stressful. Making cookies is not stressful. I can't imagine my husband participating in a baby shower. I found the whole concept of watching the men try to multi-task and fail to be insulting. My husband was/is every bit as capable as I am to care for our children...just as I am every bit as capable of working to provide finances to help support our families needs. It has become evident there really is not any new content for this show. The adult "kids" really do not have any goals outside of domestic life. While there is nothing wrong with that it's not very interesting to watch.

    1. With that many guests it is. I Can plan a party but hate to carry it out; so I say it most certainly can be stressful.

    2. Oh, yeah, planning any sort of event can be stressful. All the details, time crunches, etc.

    3. If it's so stressful for Sierra, she might want to stop doing it. If I had as many children as Sierra, I would have my hands full just caring for my own family competently, so I can understand why planning parties for other people might be stressful.

The Duggars do follow our blog, but they are unable to read every post and comment.

Thanks for being a loyal reader!

  15. Totally agree with Sierra on the baby/bridal shower thing. . .wish my church included the men too. Most of the time it just ends up being so awkward with just women. Not a fan of the normal shower games either. I say invite everybody and just have one big party!

    1. This is an interesting discussion. Why are men necessary for a party? Can't women enjoy each other without men?

  16. Interesting answer about why men are included at baby showers. Is she saying women need men around to have a good, non-awkward time?

    1. I can't understand as a wife and mother wanting my husband--let alone a bunch of men--at a baby shower. We all know every female there is telling her labor story to try and "one up" each other on the amount of pain and suffering they endured. Do you really think the men/husbands are interested? I love my husband to much to put him through that kind of torturous activity!!

    2. I know!! Because women have such a hard time being chatty with each other...said no man ever!

    3. Maybe the women they hang out with have no idea what to say if a man is not in the room to help them or to monitor them? Otherwise, Sierra's statement made no sense at all.

  17. Seriously. For a culture that preaches definitive gender roles I can't think of something more emasculating than men at a baby shower!

    1. And they've made the men do some really crazy things, so they could laugh at them.

    2. Emasculating??? Please explain. Men can be just as interested as women in new things for their babies. Maybe not traditional, but it hardly makes them less of a man.

    3. The games were set up to simply mock the men--pridefully proving how much better women are at multi-tasking. I am a feminist--all for equal rights in all things--and I would never subject my husband or any other man to a baby shower just to prove he is inadequate at certain things. I agree good men/fathers do enjoy learning new things as to the care of their children. I know some wonderful stay-at-home Dads as their wives were more emotionally equipped to be the full time breadwinner so to speak. These men did not become pseudo "moms". They are still Dad--functioning and running their homes from a masculine perspective. Not planning and attending baby showers.

    4. I agree that in their definitive gender roles culture, it's strange to see men expected to attend a baby shower. I wouldn't even expect a man in my own mainstream culture to enjoy a baby shower.

  18. I found it sad that Sierra thinks women can't have fun together... Most of the time when it's only women we bave different conversations than when it's a mixed group, but those heart to heart conversations with girl friends are so precious. And even when we talk about silly things it's always nice to exchange tips, or stuff like that.

    1. I agree - there's no need for the men to be at every get-together, especially showers. With men present, you can't talk about "girl" stuff. What man wants to listen to women compare birthing stories, which inevitably come up at baby showers?

    2. Yeah, good example. Also, I think socially it's a very good thing to have occasions to be just among women, friends, to relax but also talk (about more or less important stuff). It's important to have those friendships and to nurture them, they will give you a lot of support and enthusiasm in life.
Even for stay at home mums I think it's such a good thing to have a break from home duties and JUST BE WITH FRIENDS. ;)

    3. It's nice when men are included. It can be a couples date night.

    4. Women always have get togethers. We chat with each other all the time and we talk about the same things day in and day out. We post the same things. Our phone calls the same stuff. Kids. Kids. Kids. Love going out with my husband. Love his jokes, conversations with other couples. Love baby showers with men.

    5. Women are always together. And we always talk about the same old thing. Love it when men are included. Conversations are diverse. There are other things to talk about instead of the typical things said at a baby shower. Who wants to keep talking about labor, morning sickness, babies and kids at every baby shower ? Why not talk about home repairs, job, career, politics, news, current events ? Why not bring our men ? The conversations are better. And why aren't the Duggar girls seeking work outside the home ? It's healthy.

  19. I wonder if Sierra gets paid to be on this show. She seems to be around a lot, promoting her party planning endeavors. Does she ever serve regular food at these events, or are desserts her specialty?

  20. All that long hair around the food. It looks like all three ladies spent a long time doing their hair for television, but they were cooking food! It just seemed staged and stiff. It's not a beauty pageant, it's the kitchen!
