Christmas with the Duggars

How do the Duggars celebrate Christmas? In the following video, Josh Duggar, who is visiting from Washington D.C. with Anna and his three (soon to be four) kids, gives viewers a tour of the Duggar house at Christmastime. The oldest of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's 19 children shares what his family does to spread Christmas cheer to people in their hometown and across the world. Michelle also explains why the Duggars have chosen not to have a big Christmas tree. And hear from newlyweds Jill and Derick Dillard and Jessa and Ben Seewald.

  14. That was great! Thanks for sharing! We have just finished celebrated our Christmas Eve. We had a great feast and the Missionary Sisters joined us. We don't do a tree either. We have a festively decorated chandelier with garlands, glass balls and a pine tree ornament with a lion lying down with the Lamb. Merry Christmas and may we all remember that He is the Gift.

  18. Merry Christmas Duggar, Dillard and Seewald families. May God bless you all. It was very special to view this on Christmas day in Australia (which comes before your Christmas day).
For Christmas this year we passed around a gift box and said 'Happy Birthday Jesus' and prayed a personal prayer to Him telling Him of the personal gift we want to give to Him this Christmas and then passed it on to the next person, finishing with Daddy who prayed for us all. A special time to stop and be thankful to our Father for giving us Jesus. I loved the gifts you prepared for neighbours. Thanks for your inspiration and pointing us always to Jesus.

  26. Salvation is free and doesn't have to be earned? Isn't that what they are doing by their long hair, skirts, pants only on guys, very restrictive music, no dancing, etc? I think they are working very hard for their salvation..unnecessarily hard IMO.

  27. Something of notice here; I was wondering how often in a given week do the older Duggar girls and Michelle shampoo, dry and style their hair? With such long hair, it would take an abundant amount of shampoo, and time to dry, curl and style that hair. The hair tutorial earlier posted was only in the curling of their hair. One would imagine that a great deal of time is involved in the drying and styling of this coiffure. I know many have wondered this, thank you.

Our family hopes you had a blessed Christmas day and enjoy fellowship with your families.

  40. I think Michelle was perfectly clear.
One reason was that they want to focus on Christ, not a big tree.
Another was that they have little kids and it's hard to keep them out of the tree and that it's been knocked over a few times.

Sounds like they want to keep the focus on Jesus, and they decided they'd rather decorate their house and not have a tree.

  43. Did anyone notice that Jessa is wearing pants? At the end when the family is coming together to sing, she is on the far right. And as she moves toward the family, you can see her in pants/jeans until Josh gets in front of her!

    1. Actually its a shorter black skirt to the knees with black leggings underneath, so it all blends in and it just looks like pants...some looks can be deceiving.

  46. I thought Michelle couldn't hold babies older than 6 months due to a missing back muscle? Why is she always holding Josie? Seems she can't stand still for long. Did her muscle miraculously regenerate?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Michelle dodged the Christmas tree question because we all know that they think a Christmas tree is a pagan thing. It's been said before. What family doesn't have small children at one time or another and manage quite well to NOT have them knock it down? Everyone.

  48. That's Jessa, not Jinger with leggings under a skirt again. They really need to just go ahead and admit that it's better to wear pants and get it over with. Putting a skirt over what are skinny jeans, seems silly. Some nice jeans, or leggings with a tunic sweater over it would be the right fashion move and certainly not immodest. No one would mistaken any of the Duggar girls for being a man.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I absolutely loved that! I also love what JOY stands for. If more people knew the meaning, there would be peace on Earth! Thank you Duggars for keeping God first and sharing with the world your testimony. Have a blessed new year!!!

  50. Wow..Jessa is wearing pants!!! Good for her. They look more like stretchy leggings than denim, but they are definitely some sort of pants. I am happy for her. She looks so nice in them too.

  52. Jessa is wearing a skirt with leggings underneath, it looks like.

  53. Re: Jessa wearing pants. I don't think she is. It looks like she is wearing a skirt & leggings. However, the value goals are modesty and femininity for women and modesty and masculinity for men, not do or don't wear pants. As adults Ben & Jessa have the responsibility to decide how to run their household and to choose what they wear. It would not be shocking or scandalous if they make decisions that are different from their parents, while having the same value goals.

    1. I completely agree. As long as none of the girls wear something to overly prove that they're women I'm sure no one in their family would really care.

  54. About earning salvation:

Salvation is FREE, by grace through faith, only by the blood of Jesus. After we are saved, we show our love for the Lord by obeying Him. In the New Testament Jesus tells us "If you love me you will obey my commandments". The Holy Spirit living in us also can convict us about things. These are *personal* convictions. Some of those things may be wearing skirts, having long hair, etc. We need to obey these convictions from God as well.

Not to earn or keep our salvation but b/c we LOVE the Lord, and what little we need to give up to obey Him is nothing compared to what He's given for us.

  55. @Anonymous, I thought I'd give Jessa 2 points for wearing pants but it looks like she's wearing a short black skirt w leggings.

    ReplyDelete
  56. This is really bizarre. What exactly is Josh selling in this odd commercial?

  57. Jessa had a skirt on with some sort of 'pants', typical to what they always do. Suited to winter too.

  58. Good for Josh, he is articulate, concise, cheerful, progressive, encouraging, etc. getting on with it.

  63. I respect everyone's opinion to have or not have a tree. But for me, having a tree brings me great focus on my Savior Jesus-Christ. The Christmas tree or the Ever green tree, is a symbol of everlasting life because that particular tree stays green most of the year. Just as through Jesus Christ we can have eternal life through His atonement and Grace. And the lights that decorate it symbolize how Jesus is the light of the world. I love looking at ours when it is all dark and ponder how much light and Joy Jesus Christ has brought me in my life, and how that through Him I can live forever in happiness. I love our tree! But as I said, I value everyone's right to celebrate the holiday however they choose :)

  64. Does the Bible tells women to wear skirts? I've been a Christian for about 15 years and it wasn't until I started to watch 19 kids and counting a couple of years ago that I found out about the skirt thing. Have I missed something here?

    ReplyDelete
  65. The bible does not tell women to wear skirts. Back in the days that it was being written, both men and women wore the same types of cloaks anyway. Look at your biblical movies...see any guys in pants? NO. So pants were designed for men, dressed for women and later on LADIES' slacks were designed and cut for women. I see no contradiction there in theology or modesty. It's just Mr. Gothard's preference of how a woman should look; hair included...Logically, any style created for women are oriented for women. I guess men choose simply to not have skirts (other than kilts) designed for them, that's why men don't wear them. Not a God commanded thing at all.

  66. The Duggars are a wonderful Christian family, living the Word of God in word and deed!

  67. The Bible states in Deut. 22:5 that the woman shall not wear that whiche pertained unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are a Monica ton unto the Lord thy God.

  70. Well, I tried to comment about this before, but was having a problem sending it.....I was so disappointed to hear that you do not support homosexuality.....People do not choose to be gay....they are born that way.....God loves ALL people.....gay, straight, black, white, Jew, catholic, Muslim.....it would be interesting if God deemed one of your children or grand children, gay.....would you forsake them? thanks for listening.....

Thank you for allowing us to share the holidays with you. This year has been hard and somewhat sad for my little family but your beautiful blog has allowed us to feel the joy of Christ. I am not sure if it matters but it seems that Jessa is wearing leggings and a cute skirt. Merry Christmas to the Duggar Family and to everyone. May the New Year bring God's blessing to each of you. Thank you for showing the love and hope that comes living for God.

  73. Pants for men didn't come into fashion until around the 1600s. How do they account for that being biblical? The bible was written well before that. There are slacks that are designed and CUT for women. That is not wearing men's clothing; and pants can be much more modest than a skirt any day.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Jessa in a blue skirt and gray leggins looks weird, she probably should've worn some black leggins if any. Or longer skirt. She did have some gray color in her top, but still I did not like a combination. By the way, how Michelle is able to hold 5-year old Josie? Josie is too big for that!

  75. Anonymous 30: I have very long hair. It's down a little past my waist and I can tell you that about 1 tbsp. of shampoo and 1 tbsp. of conditioner is all that is needed.

    Anonymous 63: Well said!

As for the leggings, I wear skirts with leggings during the winter for warmth!

    Love their huge nativity.

Anonymous 80: I think I read somewhere that Jinger tans.

  76. The Christmas Tree is a Christian symbol... study the origin and the extensive history of the Christmas tree... this tree represents the Tree of Life... the Cross... the tree upon which Our Lord is crucified later. This is why it is a big tree, and why it is decorated. The gifts are placed under the tree as a symbol of graces given to all of us because of the price Our Lord paid for our redemption. In some countries food and candy is placed on the tree for the same reason, with a more direct reference to Our Lord's Body and Blood in the Blessed Sacrament. The tree and the nativity scene also have several foreshadowing elements that are similar to the scene of Our Lord's passion, death, and burial. How He came into the world, is also how He died.
