Jill Dillard on New Season and Being Pregnant

Jill Dillard recently sat down with OKMagazine.com to chat about her pregnancy and the new season of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting, which premiered Tuesday and will run through November. The transcript of the interview is posted below, courtesy of OKMagazine.com

OKMagazine.com: Hi Jill. How are you today?
Jill Dillard
: Doing pretty good. Feeling pregnant (laughs).

OKMagazine.com: Ok, let’s talk about the pregnancy right off the bat then! How’s it going?
JD: It’s going well. I’m really grateful, and both Derick and I are really excited to be parents and yeah, we’re just enjoying every season of life right now.

OKMagazine.com: I watched the premiere, and it seems like you and Derick have the main storyline this season…
JD: We do, yeah. We’ve had a lot of exciting things happening, and so this season is following us a lot, from preparing for our wedding from our engagement to the wedding, so its going to be a really exciting season.

OKMagazine.com: Are you excited or nervous to see your wedding play out on TV?
JD:
Laughs. I am excited. I think I’ll be nervous when I see it. I’ve seen some of the rough cuts, so you get that nervous excitement again, but yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing it. That’s one thing that’s special about having, we call it this home video almost. [The show] is nice edited home video. You get to see it again in a nice format (laughs).

OKMagazine.com: You broke the pregnancy news to your family a month after your wedding. Did anyone in your family react differently than you expected?
JD: No, my whole family was really excited. Of course my sisters were always asking, how are you feeling? Do you think you could be pregnant? So they were the first ones to find out. They’re like, “You know mom has pregnancy tests.” And I said, "I’ve already taken two! They’re negative!" And the one I had taken should’ve showed that I was expecting, but I guess it was still too early, so then one of my sisters was like, “Go upstairs and take one of mom’s.” So we went up there and took one, mostly to prove them wrong, but then we were surprised because I was pregnant (laughs).

OKMagazine.com: So your family suspected your pregnancy even though it was so soon after the wedding?
JD: My sisters did. Typical sisters are going to ask you questions that no one else asks, like, "Wouldn’t it be cool if you got pregnant right away?" And I was like, "Yeah it’d be cool." But we were open to whatever. We weren’t preventing anything, and we were just waiting on God’s timing. It’s just a really neat surprise.

OKMagazine.com: Are you going to find out the gender?
JD:
We’re planning to find out the gender. Of course we can’t find it out yet, it’s still early. But yeah, we’re going to do that, and it’ll be announced around the time that we find out.

OKMagazine.com: Oh good. And I assume you’ll be using a midwife since you’re one yourself…
JD: Yeah, I’m training to be a midwife. We will be using a midwife, and I’ll be delivering at home, Lord willing.

OKMagazine: Will the TLC cameras be there to capture the birth?
JD: Well, we’re still talking about that. We’ll see (laughs).

OKMagazine.com: Are you going to name all your kids with the same letter as your parents and brother Josh have done?
JD:
We’re still talking about that also. I don’t think we’re going to do a letter theme, but we might do a different theme. We’ll see. We’re still talking (laughs).

OKMagazine.com: I read that your sister Jessa is reusing some of your wedding decorations for her big day. Have you been giving her a lot of wedding advice?
JD: Yeah, definitely. As sisters, you’re always talking about those things. Jessa will be using a lot of my decorations, things that we purchased that are universal. And we’ve talked a lot. I think even throughout the relationship, we talked as we were both courting and then me going from courting to engagement and Jessa now being engaged.  And now with her wedding planning, I’m like, “Ok Jess, do this, do that. Don’t forget this.” I took notes during my wedding planning for Jessa, as I knew she was probably going to be the next one getting married.

OKMagazine.com: What do you think sets season eight apart from the other season of 19 Kids & Counting?
JD
: I’m really excited about it because people have been asking a lot of questions about wedding planning, and so much changed in our family right now with two relationships, me getting married, now we’re expecting, Josh living in DC. Fans have been getting tidbits through media outlets, but they want to see how things are done Duggar style as far as the wedding goes, and that’s going to be one of the bigger storylines—how everybody was involved with the wedding, what is it like for my parents giving their daughter away, how each sibling is taking it differently. So yeah, I think people will be really happy to follow along and really feel like they’re a part of it all.

  6. I have a question about this family and their definition of modesty.
Somewhere in the Bible it states that a woman's hair is her "crowning glory". A woman's hair is attractive to males. If the Duggars believe in not attracting males to themselves, why do they flaunt long, flowing, hair for all to see? The Amish believe the same to be true about the hair and they cover it with prayer caps so it is only for their husbands to enjoy. The Amish have been around far longer than the Gothard-like belief system (1970s?). Why is ok for them to be in direct opposition with this this practice? If anyone knows the answer to this question, please post. BTW, I respect the Amish community very much as they truly live out their humility in private and seek no fame or fortune for their clean belief system and lifestyle. They are truly a humble people.

    1. I can't answer from the Christian perspective but can tell you that in the orthodox Jewish community, it's simply tradition. We generally cover our hair in public after marriage and many of the women buy very beautiful long flowing wigs. It's a symbol to our husbands that our hair is for their eyes. Also, married orthodox men and women do not touch or shake hands with someone of the opposite sex. It's a sign of respect for our spouses and the other person's spouse. Men ALSO have modesty standards. One of the modesty standards is to wear a yarmulke to remind them that there is someone (G-d) higher than they are. Women do not do this because we are naturally spiritual and do not need the reminder. We are the guardians of the faith. We teach the future. The center of Jewish life is the Jewish home. It is an honor, a mitzvah for a woman to be the family's spiritual leader. Tied into that are ensuring that the family follows the kosher laws, family purity law, and raising children in a loving, faith-filled environment with G-d at the forefront. (We are similar to you in that respect & why I admire this family.)

Our dress standards are actually harder than Christian modesty; ie no short sleeves. We do it out of a sense of self-respect and respect for our spouses, not to keep men away. It is also our "Jewish uniform." It unites us and sets us apart as we fulfill our goal to be a light for the nations.

    4. There are alot of ways to demonstrate being humble, for instance we only know a fraction of the charities and money they give.Their reason for doing the show was not to seek fame, that was unavoidable. The more they make the more they give.No religious sects are 100% perfect, so to say some are wrong or better than others is just going against the Bible. We all lead different lives and have an American right to do so.So lets all be kind and respect one anothers differences. If you dont like the Duggars then dont watch or read about them, simple as that. I sound like a parrot as i have said all this before.I will never tire sticking up for this family.Peace be with you:-):-):-)

    5. Excuse me? Have you watched this show? Point A: Jim Bob thinks this is a good look for the girls and so do they (it's their lives). Point B: they are not Amish and I doubt they'll be converting anytime soon.

    6. 1 Corinthians 11:15 says, But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering

      Delete
    7. Just before the Bible says that a woman's hair is her glory, it says that God gave her hair to her AS a covering. Most Christians believe that means we do not need to cover our hair. :) It's 1 Corinthians 11:15.

      Delete
    8. They have said in interviews that the bible says "a woman's hair is their glory" therefore they treat it as such. They take good care of it and spend time to make sure it looks nice. The bible also says that a woman's hair is her "natural covering". Why would you wear a covering over a covering? Seems a bit silly. The duggars believe in attracting people to their faces instead of their bodies, your hair is a great way of doing that.

  7. If they do stick to one letter I hope it is R for his dad.
Rachael, Rebecca, and Rylie are cute for girls.
Richard(Ricky), Robert(Robbie or Rob)are cute for boys, especially if she has twins. Richard being named after Derrick's dad and Robert from Jim Bob.

But it is so nice to keep it for a while for you and your family.

  17. If they do the Alphabet order they could use Richard as a middle name. Twin boys names would be darling such as Adam Richard and Andrew Robert or whatever A name she might choose but it would honor the two grandfathers. I like the ABC thing. 18. Amish men keep their heads covered too. Amish women do not wear a head cap out of modesty for their husbands. Amish men and women are wearing hats and bonnets to protect their skin from the sun. They live in an agricultural society. In the bible it says a woman's hair should be covered when she prays so the woman also has the prayer cap, usually white. Depends on age and rules of the individual Amish community. It's worn all the time. Prayer can happen all the time. Catholics used to wear a veil in church but now most women do not, the practice continues in some countries, it is optional. Now it is usually only worn by religious, in some religious communities, and at the more vain moments in a woman's life like first communion and wedding. In the more orthodox Jewish faiths women color or cover their hair so only their husbands see it. It could be a wig or a hat. There are a thousand ways to read scripture and adapt it to life. You can not breath without attracting a male to yourself as a woman. You can not breath without attracting a female to yourself as a male.

    1. Im a Catholic, and where a veil in church, I also am very traditional and enjoy the traditional catholic masses and sacraments, the reason I veil is extensive but part of it is because woman are sacred, we bring Gods life into the world. It was Mary , a woman who brought Christ into the world due to her lack of original sin wasn't it?

  24. Does anyone know where the Duggars got the belief in having the wife have children nearly every year of her adult life? If this were mainstream Christianity, then 19 children per family would be very, very common. This is so unique to have this many children. What are other Christians missing in that if this is God's will, then why isn't the typical Christian family huge like this one?

  35. I thought the scripture, referred to women covering their heads when they were praying and prophesying. I also thought that a woman's hair, was her cover, her crowning glory. I certainly have no argument with a women who covers her head all of the time, but I think this is one of those issues that is up to intrpretation and conviction. Similar to Biblical passages regarding women and men refraining from wearing clothing associated with the opposite gender. Personally, I think the Duggar girls have lovely hair and the way they wear it is very pretty, very feminine.

  41. Very good thought Anonymous 6! I got to thinking about it and I know a lot of homeschool families where their daughter's hair was long and flowy. I don't know why! I guess they think it is a sign of purity. I also have seen many amish people with the prayer caps. I think that the duggars are similar to the amish in many ways. But, I guess instead of saving their hair for their husband (that sounds really weird!!) they save their first kiss and you know what else. They also dress very similar to amish, long skirts (they used to be!) and shoulders covered. I personally do not agree with their dress code or hair standard. I have medium length hair and enjoy wearing skinny jeans, nike shorts and tank tops a lot. I wonder if their parents would let them, if the duggar girls would wear pants and even shorts. And the boys, poor things are only allowed to wear pants no shorts for them!! Oh, how do they survive the summer since they are outside half their lives!! Now, I do not say all this to say that I hate the duggars! I LOVE AND ADORE THE DUGGARS!!! I am so grateful that there is a show like this that I can feel safe watching with my kids!! :) I just dont agree with their modesty standards. I feel like my daughters and I are completely modest (covering what needs to be covered) without being different or feeling weird! I would be harshly judged in my area if I all of a sudden started wearing skirts to at least the middle of my calf and short or long sleeved shirts! Come on!! We are in the 21st century people!! :)

  42. @Anonymous

I can see why there would be some confusion on this. I believe that the scripture you are referring to is 1 Corinthians 11:4-6 and also 13-16:

Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head....Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.

This scripture states that the a woman's long hair takes the place of a "prayer covering", so it's not necessary for a woman to cover her head unless it's shaved. As for the Amish, they have MANY rules that have no foundation at all in scripture, although the Bible also says that if if something sears your conscience, don't do it (1 Corinthians 8:1-13). So long as actions don't go against teachings in the Bible it's fine to live how you want. In the same way, there's no direct scripture that says that women should never wear pants, only to dress modestly, however the Duggar women choose to wear skirts most of the time because that's what their conscience directs them to do. Ultimately salvation from Christ is something that's received, not earned because you followed a bunch of rules.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That is kinda true, but though the scripture says that it is wrong for a woman's head to be uncovered I veil my hair in church for that reason.

  43. Knowing they are modest, I wonder where they find modest maternity clothes? I ask this because I see way too many tight fitting and far from modest maternity wear being worn. Do they have someone make their maternity blouses? I don't understand why women would want tight fitting clothing during that time.

  48. Re the question about the hair and the Amish people - I wonder what lifestyle the person who made this comment lives everyday in their home and community, and I wonder if they are female and wear a prayer cap themselves? Not too many people do that anymore unless they are in specific church denominations, as the comment did point out the Amish is one who do. Doesn't the Bible New Testament passage also say judge for yourselves (1 Corinthians 11:13)? At first in the chapter the passages seem adamant - and then it is not nearly so definitive in later verses and it actually reads as 'judge for yourselves'. Also it is referred to as a 'practice' of the churches and mentions if anyone wants to be 'contentious' about it. In the first verse Paul states - follow me as I follow Christ - and then he says that head covering is a 'tradition'. Well, if we follow Christ, not just Paul - who is also a follower of Christ - we can note that Jesus said that the 'traditions' of men were being put before the real laws of God, tis is in in Mark 7:7-9 7'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.' 8"Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men." 9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition."
… that is how I am see it all and so I don't think it is a major issue, because it was referred to as a tradition and a practice (of the churches or of men?), (more so than a commandment of God). Next point is that the posted comment I am answering to, made the inference that the Duggars are living their lifestyle in order to gain public notoriety and earn money. This is not fair to the Duggars. The world was so curious to learn about super sized families it became a topic for a TLC show and then the Duggars agreed that they would allow the shows to be made if their faith was not censored out. Right from the start the Duggars defended their faith as integral to who they were and their intention in agreeing to the TLC shows was never to flaunt it as a way to make money. If the world is interested in the Christian faith praise God and Jesus Christ! That is essentially the point of all life in the world! Think of Luke 18:8 "... However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?" I think what has happened must be something God wants done to increase faith in Jesus in the world and not just something for the Duggars to quietly do in their small corner of the world without letting others know about it as the comment suggested they do. Anyway there are TLC shows on the Amish also, so the comment I am responding to conveniently left that point out to make their Amish vs Duggars criticism of the Duggars. It strikes me as ironic that this comment goes from discussing women covering their heads to subduing the faith from the sight of mankind. Some how that is like straining out a gnat and trying to hide the camel.

  51. at anonymous 6: not to be unkind but first of all we do not compare ourselves with the Amish or any other denomination or how long theyve been around...thats makes absoloutley no difference the Amish could be have been around since the 1600s and it still wouldnt make a difference they are human beings and their not perfect just like none of us are. we compare ourselves to Jesus the only perfect person who ever walked the earth and we get our instructions/ beliefs based on what the bible says. you just said the bible says a womans hair is her glory so that right there is enough proof that there is nothing wrong with the duggars having pretty long hair! you are the one that added long hair attracts men..well i agree but so does short hair and so does bikinis and so does inmodest dress in essence men are attracted to woman no matter what thats the way God made them and its not wrong to be attractive in a godly way. the bible says to dress modest so thats why we dont wear the inmodest dress and attract the wrong type of men but it does not say not to have long hair in fact is says the opposite. would you want the duggars to shave their heads? if not what length would be the perfect length that men would not be attracted to them? i dont think there is one. that why i think its beautiful that they have long pretty hair that btw i dont think they flaunt..n .and its feminine and in accordance with the scriptures. we dont have to worry if its in accordance with the Amish just because theyve been around longer.. that makes no difference. not to be unkind just sayin....

The excitement and choices people would come up would be neat, especially since they would know which letter you would be using next. I bet you would get a lot of advice. Hey it would keep everybody interested in naming your kids.

  56. I like the names Ashlyn and Alexis for a girl. Andrew and Austin for a boy. There are so many nice A letter names. I like the ABC theme, as there are a lot of nice names in each letter. Congratulations, by the way!

  59. I love the Duggars and have watched the show from the beginning. I've never seen info, tho, on how much money they earn from the TLC channel. Does anyone know? Do they each get $$$ or just the parents? I am sure it is TLC that sends them to Tibet and all the other trips around the world.

  60. Anonymous said... 6 , you need to look at the Amish again. Not humble.. They make their money charging a fortune for things they make, and the Amish are massive producers of Puppy mill dogs.
