Joy-Anna, Jason, James, Jackson, and Johannah Duggar spent Thursday evening at Jill and Derick Dillard's house watching VeggieTales and eating poor man's pizza, a favorite Duggar family recipe (see below). Are you a VeggieTales fan?
Duggars' Poor Man's Pizza
Variation #1
20 flour tortillas
1 jar spaghetti sauce
4 c. shredded cheddar cheese (or Mexican blend)
Spread spaghetti sauce on each tortilla. Sprinkle with cheese. Warm on plate in microwave for 1 min.

It is nice to see such a fun time for the Dillard/Duggar group, with a higher purpose! Jill is always a loving sister and Derick radiates warmth in his nice smile! Thanks for sharing!

It's pretty good actually, we make those in our special ed class for the kids for snack. Just because they aren't poor doesn't mean they can't like simple recipes.

The desperation to eat, eat, eat....it must be a constant panic with that big of a family! What a daunting thought, i.e. your siblings, and your own children, and the sibling's children....they had better start on pot lucks as that is going to have to be the way at their get togethers in the future.

ReplyDeleteDon't be afraid to throw on some frozen veg , there, guys. Still inexpensive, but ups the health factor at least a little. Cheese and bread by itself is not the greatest of dinner-- and no, smiles, tomato sauce is not an adequate serving of veg! My fave thing to add here is spinach...give it a shot. There's loads of ways to eat healthily on a budget.

ReplyDeleteIt bothers me that Christians are so hard on each other. It's been said that they shoot their own, and that's true here. Why do people look at a picture so they can critique it? It's a lovely family spending time together watching a faith based movie with some snacks. Compared to what I see in the news these days, it's refreshing. Not all Christians follow the same principles, and sometimes we should leave our judgments to ourselves. Be happy for them and try not to discourage their joy at having a good time with Jill's little brothers and sisters.

ReplyDeleteIt's not tomato sauce. It's spaghetti sauce. How is cooking down tomatoes and other vegetables NOT a serving of veggie? It's made from veggies. There could be spinach in it already? How is this different from soups and stews that have veggies in it. They could have skipped the spaghetti sauce and just has quesadillas and no vegetable. The shells could be made with spinach or whole grain?
ReplyDeleteThe hand signal is not a problem in the states. Usually it's the hand turned the other way for a peace sign. Maybe he didn't have his hand ready before the photo was snapped?

I don't know why people get so worked up & criticize what they are eating, they have younger ones over.. its just something quick, fun & easy to eat while they're watching a show... I think we've all done that. I'm sure they eat vegetables and besides maybe it's somewhat of a comfort food from their earlier days, they didn't always have money. God Bless :)

But which episode did they watch? Was it the new one, Celery Night Fever? Please post! Oh! by the way, I hope that Jill and Derick share Veggietales with their kids someday. Do they have a television for watching DVD's or do they use a laptop and projector like her parents do in their living room? I'm asking because it seems that Josh and Anna have a television in their home and neither of them grew up watching TV, unless they use it to watch DVD's and just the news and the show and that's it.

DeleteLove this show from day 1!!! Love their morals and their simplicity in life. I am proud of them all. Their parents ate doing a wonderful job raising fine children. In love how the older ones still spend quality time with their younger siblings. We have favorite kids foods that my sister and I talk about and make occasionally. Nothing wrong with it. There will always be people in this negative society who can and will find fault in everything this family does. Its quit sad really. Learn to ignore them and continue to live your happy lives regardless of what anyone else says. I love this family and always will. They are fine examples of Christ's love for one another. Yes, Veggie Tales is more for the younger ones, but I've found they any age can enjoy Veggie Tales......I think the older Veggie Tales are the best ones though. We do "pizza bread" all the time, but I toast the bread first to make it crunch, instead of putting it in the oven and having only one side get crunchy. Love the VeggieTales! Watched it all the time when my kids were little :)
ReplyDeleteHere is the full recipe for pizza bread: Toast two slices of bread, add spaghetti sauce and either shredded cheddar cheese or one slice of American cheese, then put in microwave for about one minute till cheese is melted.

No one must realize or the picture would never have been posted. The Duggar family never insults on purpose.
We use day old biscuits for poor man pizza or English muffins and add some fresh veggies like spinach, mushrooms, peppers and such....if you eat meat ground beef goes a long way too...

ReplyDeleteVeggie Tales is so cute and wholesome. Our church use to show these for families to gather on Friday nights. Of course, the younger ones just loved it. The parents and older siblings watched and thought they were adorable! Great messages in those videos. Jill, you are an awesome big sis! I just can't help but wonder why Josie, Jordyn, or Jennifer come..they would LOVE it!

ReplyDeleteFor those readers out there that posted that this show is aimed for a younger age level: yes, that is true, but what is also true is that I still enjoy watching it at 18!! (I even still go around singing the silly songs with my younger siblings and friends my own age..) I also know a few adult aged people that still would quite happily sit down and watch it; the oldest would be about 30!!
Hello, peoples!!!!!!! Poor man's pizza is their type of takeaway!!!! Do you eat a pack of frozen veg when you buy pizza or Mcdonalds? And besides, homemade takeaway is nicer AND cheaper than shop bought!!! And even if I had as much money as the Duggars do now, I wouldn't want to bring my younger kids up without those family memories that my older kids enjoyed! And just think of who would have made the poor mans pizza?? Probably a group of them together...

Do Jill and Derick spend any time with his family? We haven't seen any photos yet of them without a Duggar in tow. Also,Michelle has opened up the very private life of a husband and wife voluntarily in her interviews and internet articles about abstaining after birth. This, I see as a logical question..what about during the 9 months? Nothing wrong with it as I see it, folks. Once you open the book, don't be selective about which chapters you are asked about. Fair question and tastefully asked.
ReplyDeleteI am sure he spends as much time as he can with his family. He only has one brother where as Jill has 18 siblings so of course it will seem like she spends more time with her family. Plus his brother is an adult and has a girlfriend which probably occupies his brother time. I am sure he visits his mom as much as he can. She may not have felt up to par lately, so maybe she didn't want visitors as much as she would like. Derrick seems very family oriented and he is probably taking the time to get know as many of Jill's siblings as possible before the baby

It would be great for Derick and Jill to have that for any of the Duggar children to see while they are over at their 'mansion'. What do mom and dad think of the kids watching videos there? I can just picture the kids losing their discipline draped over couches and chairs eating snacks wanting just another one, please, please, please. They don't know the territory they are venturing into but mom and dad have experience there.

ReplyDeleteIt is not entirely unreasonable to suggest that they take into consideration what is acceptable/not acceptable in other countries. That being said, it would take quite a bit to be educated on the societal rules of every country in the world, and being as it is pretty much 100 percent certain that Jason meant no harm, we need to cut them some slack. JMO.

As for why I don't like Veggie Tales, do I really need any better reason than Rev. 22:18-19? We must never take away from or add to God's word. Veggie Tales distorts Biblical history with it's attempts at humor and marketability. And actually, after the big bankruptcy of Big Ideas and everything, the founder Phil Vischer admitted that the shows taught morality and NOT Christianity.
