"Big Changes" Recap

On tonight's new episode of 19 Kids and Counting, "Big Changes"...

  • The show kicks off with an updated intro.
  • One week before they move to Washington D.C., Josh and Anna take Marcus in for a well-baby checkup to make sure he is ready to travel across the country.
  • Before making their big move, Josh and Anna head to the nation's capital to find a house to rent. They decide to start their search in the suburbs, where they hope to have more breathing room. After looking at three options, the couple is ready to make their decision.
  • They pass up the two with more limited living quarters that are closest to the metro for a 3,000 square-foot home with five bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. Josh will have to drive to work every day but is happy to make the sacrifice for his kids, who are thrilled with the new house.
  • The day before Josh and Anna leave, they invite the whole Duggar crew over for a packing party. Jim Bob's only question about the whole process is, "What's for lunch?"
  • But guess who walks in while he and Josh are taking a pizza break? Their personal trainer! He quickly takes charge and makes them do the heaviest lifting, while himself enjoying an ice cream sandwich.
  • While packing, the kids have some fun with the label maker, which includes tagging their oldest brother with a sticker that reads "Slavedriver Josh."
  • After one long day of work, five years of memories are packed up, and the Duggar caravan is ready to leave Arkansas.
  • "As a mom, it's hard," says Michelle. "You want your children nearby, but yet you want them to follow their dreams."
  • "Even though we have 19 children, it's still going to be really difficult when one moves away," says Jim Bob.
  • The moving parade consists of two moving trucks (driven by Jana and John-David), an SUV (driven by Jessa and Jinger), a truck and trailer (driven by Joseph), the Duggar bus (driven by Josiah) pulling a minivan, and a motor home (driven by Josh). On the way to D.C., all 25 Duggars stop for a quick visit with the Bates family, who surprise their friends with a baby shower for Marcus and gifts for Josh and Anna.
  • After spending the night at the Bates' house, Josh and Anna head out early, while the rest of the Duggars sleep in and hits the road...the next day? Once they reach D.C., the family of five spends a quiet night in their motor home, parked outside their empty house.

  2. Haha! I kinda figured they wouldn't be leaving the Bates' as soon as they thought.

  3. I thought it was great that the whole family helped Josh and Anna pack and move, but I thought it was not very thoughtful of them to stay an extra day at the Bates' when Josh was counting on them. They knew he had a time deadline and he was under a great deal of stress. Maybe they could have visited the Bates' on their way home from D.C.

  5. This was the most mature Duggar show I have ever seen, and I respect the Duggars for their beliefs and their family and their commitment to religion. I respect the Duggars except for one of the teen boys that showed such intolerance to people with other ways of worshiping that was quite obvious to the viewing public, but I think from Michelle's public words that she is dealing with that and she is teaching her children to respect all people. However, having said this, I also respect June on Honey Boo Boo for her love of her children, and I think she is doing a fantastic job of raising her children. I have to say the Dad on My Five Wives is doing an outstanding job. I have to say the Dad on Sister Wives is doing a fantastic job. I have to say the Dad on The Willis Clan is doing a fantastic job. In my opinion, the I will give you a hint - the Dad on the K's show is not doing a fantastic job. We are all children of God. While I don't believe in the doctrine of the Duggars or of any of the shows I mentioned, I watch and respect and learn from each and every one of them. I don't see where TV has tried to influence me to be one way or the other about each of these family's beliefs. That is up to me and my God. Kudos to the Duggars for a classy show. God gives me an open heart and he gives me the option to interpret His word as He speaks to my heart. The only possible objection I have to the Duggars is that this is a huge world.....your children must live in it without your umbrella of protection.....and I think they are starting to once Michelle has accepted her place in life is not to birth any more babies, yet to nurture the ones God gave her already. I respect this is a hard transition for both Jim Bob and Michelle, and I respect the way they are handling it. Thanks.

  7. I thought that on tonight's show that when someone is in the process of moving as Josh and Anna were, and Jim Bob decides to call and see if the Bates were up for a visit, that was ok, except when they knew full well that they were on a tight timeline. I think that when Josh decided to leave early to get to DC, that was a hint for Jim Bob to get the family up and moving. And then when Josh calls his dad and says where are you and they tell him that they lost track of time. I that that was so disrespectful and thoughtless to Josh & Anna's family. (I speak from experience on this one). I hope that you stop and think about what your so called "Dugger time" has done to their stress level. You could have gone back for a longer visit with the Bates on the return trip.

  8. I enjoyed watching this episode, although it kinda drove me crazy that the parents didn't make sure to leave on time to drive the rest of the way from Tennessee. At least Josh and Anna had the RV to sleep in, but that next day must have been rough on all of them, especially Anna being in an empty house all day with the kids and Josh having to take that big vehicle into DC for work. If it were me I wouldn't have been too happy! Good thing they're a loving and forgiving family, but yikes.

  10. Maybe, JimBob is teasing and they are pulling up right behind them? Who knows? But we will know next week.

  11. Has anyone found it available to buy online or watch online yet? Can't wait to see it. Amazon and Itunes doesn't have it up yet. Laying in bed sick today so I can't wait for it to come on!

  12. @Anonymous I agree! It really disappointed me that they let down Josh and Anna by staying an extra day. Knowing they tend to run late and get caught up with the Bates' a little too long they shouldn't have stayed the night in the first place, even though it was very sweet of the Bates family to offer! I feel for Josh and Anna. We are a military family and have moved a number of times and moving is stressful enough without the help you're relying on bailing on you midway through. I hope they apologize in the next episode and make things right. We all make mistakes, but this just really surprised me about Jim Bob and Michelle.

Really respect that comment. Very mature. Just out of curiosity (I didn't see this episode or many from last season due to lack of cable) which son were you talking about that showed such intolerance? Thanks and again good comment.

  16. I liked the series opener! And I wish them all the best.

That being said, I felt that Jim Bob and Michelle were disrespectful to Josh when they stayed over at the Bateses' house. If that was not scripted, I do hope they apologized.

    Otherwise, great show!

  19. I am soooooo disappointed with JimBob and Michelle, how utterlely disrespectful of them to not leave early the next morning. They could have revisited the Bates on the way home, did you see the look on poor Josh and Anna's face? Really, Josh should have displayed his frustrations to them. Worst of all Jim and Michelle thought it was funny. Not cool at all;>{ Godspeed! I wish them all the best!

  21. I can't believe Josiah is driving! I know he is like 18, but it seems like yesterday he was 10!

  22. I feel it was absoultly thoughtless and selfish that they left Anna and Josh in DC with nothing. They have 3 small children one of them an infant! You mean to tell me in a house full of 40 or so people no one thought "hey maybe we/you should head out?" I just can't belive it.

  23. Oh. My. Goodness! I can't believe Josiah is driving the bus! I can remember when he was MY age!

  24. What's the point of going through so much trouble, loosing so much weight, and even getting a personal trainer when you're just going to gain all of that weight back... Josh looks a lot more chunkier now looking at his photos on Instagram... Ridiculous!!

    Hi Mmolesy,

Apparently it's a synonym for "recap"...when you've been awake for 16 hours and are typing out a long post:) Thanks for catching that!

  26. I really enjoyed the show last night and am glad they are back. Such a good episode and so many changes - what a time this will be for Josh and Anna. Like so many others here I was uncomfortable with what looked like a momentary lapse of concern and support for Josh and Anna as they settled in to their new home, which is quite nice by the way :-) I think it is best to delay judgment though as you just never know what was really going on here. The whole thing could have been planned that way for all we know. I have heard that most if not all reality shows are scripted. Another possibility is that Jim Bob & Michelle only appeared to be unconcerned thanks to the editing ?? Gosh I hope so! But if what we saw was an accurate telling of what happened, then I will chock it up to realism. All of us are sometimes insensitive to those we love, we hurt one another's feelings and thoughtlessly injure; providing ample opportunity to practice forgiveness, patience & repentance. I admire this family very much and I guess it is pretty easy to make allowances for an occasional faux pas since there have been so few over years. They seem to negotiate their life in the spotlight with such grace. What a wonderful job they are doing raising their family, keeping their marriage strong and steadfastly adhering to their faith and convictions with out compromising themselves to accommodate all of the worldly pressures they must be under.

  27. Lol@ Lilly and Ellie. :-)
Firstly, I have no idea why they felt they needed two moving trucks. Surely they wouldn't have that much stuff. Not only that, they did a shocking job of packing the trucks. so much wasted space!!!if my husband packed them they would only need one truck, not two.
I'll also admit I haven't seen the entire episode. But what I am hearing about the bates visit left me disappointed. I agree that it sounds very thoughtless of Jimbob and Michelle to do that to josh and anna. Those that were helping josh and anna move should of excused themselves and helped anna and josh complete the move. Even help unpacking the trucks nd then returned to the bates house. Effectively it sounds like they put friends above family. And to make it. Even worse they did it knowing they had such young children in their care!! But I ill finish watching the episode and see if my thoughts change on it at all.

  28. I don't think the parents were trying to be rude. They were going through a hard time having one of their children move away, so they probably really enjoyed spending time with some friends. The Duggar and Bates kids are good friends too. I think Mr. Duggar just did not think of making the trip when they were on their way home. It was probably kid of a sad time for the parents and Josh's other siblings so Mr. Duggar thought it would be good for them to spend time with the Bates. So, in that way, he may have been considering the rest of his family, as well as Josh and his family. I am not sure but that is how I see their actions.

I am so surprised with how Joy-anna has matured. She has a sweet spirit and more grown up appearance now.

I was surprised at Josiah as well. It seems like he was just pretty short and finding it hard to drive and now he is driving a bus.

Josie has grown a lot too. She looked so big.

  29. I just wanted to add one thing. I love the Duggars and have watched most of the episodes of their show. It really annoys me that the Duggar men act like they do not have money when they really do. Mr. Duggar has a huge house and takes care of 18 children without debt. He also ran for senator using quite a bit of money and they have the show. They have music lessons and other activities, too. It would be nice if they said "God has blessed me financially, or even "God has gifted me with an ability to make and manage money" or something along those lines. Josh and Anna obviously aren't suffering if they got the house they had in the Washington D.C. area debt-free. They must be great at making and managing money unlike a lot of people. Some people really struggle with finances and it seems that even though they pray for God's blessing it never really comes and it is a struggle just to get by and there is no ability to get anything close to a nice house or car or provide for themselves and their children. Sometimes it is even hard to find a job that pays decently in your field or to find a field you would be good at. There are many people on public assistance who try to get off but it seems like they can't even when they try. Maybe there is just something wrong with these poor people? Josh and Anna definitely do not know how it is to really struggle with money to the point where it is barely possible to buy food and clothing let alone furniture, a car, or a nice house.

  30. Some of the posters have commented on Josh's ability to afford to buy such a large home. Not that it matters all that much either way, but, I got the impression that Josh and Anna are renting their house in DC because when they first arrived Anna commented on an attractive flower arrangement and said 'a gift from our landlord' now I may be mistaken of course and my recall is no doubt inexact.
