Recap: "Baby Steps" and "Kittens and Konstruction"

Tonight on 19 Kids and Counting...

"Baby Steps"
  • The show opens at Josh and Anna's house, as Mackynzie models her denim dress for the camera. "I have pockets!" says the toddler. "See, I have pockets!"
  • "Mackynzie is definitely very verbal," says Anna.
  • Josh and Anna welcome a new member into their family ... a kitten named Domino. (Great guesses, readers!) Just like the Duggars' previous cat, Domino will soon live outside. For those who were wondering, the feline featured in "Josie's First Birthday" eventually stopped coming home.
  • Later, Anna brings the kids to the car lot so that Michael can show Daddy his latest accomplishment. The then-11-month-old takes his first steps. (Mackynzie began walking at 13 months.)
  • Fun fact: Josh usually has about 80 vehicles for sale between his two car lots.
  • Josh and Anna, Jim Bob and Michelle, and Anna's family, who is visiting from Florida, head to the local bowling alley for an afternoon of fun and fellowship.  "I don't like competition," says Anna.
  • Michelle, who does not consider herself a skilled bowler, ends up doing very well.  Her advice to novice bowlers? "I like to use those little side rails," explains the mom of many, chuckling. "If you really want to get a high score, use those little rails that come up on the side."
  • Mrs. Keller makes her way to the top of the pack, but Jim Bob is determined to take the lead. At the end of the game, the two are tied, and Jim Bob insists on a tie breaker. "I ended up beating her by one pin," says the Duggar dad. "I almost felt bad.. I think she let me win."

"Kittens and Konstruction"
  • Michelle receives a call from her kids. They are on the road with Jim Bob and would like her permission to purchase a kitten. She gives in. How about two kittens? Michelle, an animal-lover at heart, cannot resist. The Duggar cat count rises to three with the addition of Ellie and Mia.
  • And then there were five! "Just when I thought we were done rescuing kittens, we ended up with three more," says Michelle. The tender-hearted Duggar men came across the kittens while fixing up the Stonybrook house--featured in "Puppies, Properties, and Patients."
  • "I'm glad that the younger kids have the opportunity to suffer--I mean to learn--through the same process of getting up and doing the feedings all throughout the night," says Jessa, recalling her own childhood of kittens. Michelle, who volunteered at an animal shelter in high school, wakes up every three hours for nighttime feedings.
  • With the help of a friend, Jim Bob and the boys continue their renovation project, and Jim Bob develops poison ivy.
  • Following in his father's entrepreneurial footsteps, John-David has almost finished clearing the property mentioned in "Puppies, Properties, and Patients" and looks forward to receiving a piece of land and a house in exchange for his work.
  • Michelle and the kids take two trips to the vet to have the kittens examined. According to the doctor, who has known the Duggars since 1975, the felines are thriving.
  • Six cats just isn't enough for the Duggars. As the credits roll, Jim Bob shares one last update: "We found seven more under the house."  Thirteen cats and counting, anyone?

  2. hmmm, thirteen cats and counting, haha, but i hope that doesn't happen. Cats are great pets, but if there are too many they can become a pest i reckon.

    1. That was in reference to something that happened when they were younger I believe.

  4. Anna really should keep the cat inside. Outside cats don't do well. The other cat was more than likely killed by a car or dog or something. I work with a cat rescue and we will not permit our cats or kittens to be put outside. This is very irresponsible of them.

This was speaking of an issue in their childhood. Obviously the girls are best friends now, and have reached adulthood.

  10. I agree with the poster about Josua and Anna's new kitten. I hope they will be responsible pet owners and keep the kitten inside. A cat can not compete with a two ton car. If you are keeping the kitten inside for a period of time and then throwing it outisde you are not teaching your children how to be responsble pet owners. Plus you wouldn't throw your child outside and expect it to fend for itself, would you? Of course not,so why is it okay to throw out a young cat?
I have 5 children, 3 cats and 1 dog. The cats are not allowed to go outside and while the dog is obviously allowed to go out, she isn't allowed to bark continously and get on the neighbors nerves. You can have kids and keep your animals inside and still find balance and harmony.

  11. We let our cats outside to play and we have never had a problem with them being outside they need to be outside sometimes but we always make sure they come in at dark its not irresponsible to let your cats outside to play and get fresh air as long as they come in before dark.

  12. Lilly & Ellie,
I am also curious how the Duggars feel about spaying or neutering their animals. These cats are blessings, but if they are left outside unaltered, they can produce over 40,000 cats in a matter of years. I'm curious if their beliefs conflict with the idea of spay/neuter.
Thank you! I love your blog!

  13. I'm sorry but I was a little shoked that Josh and Anna just take a cute kitten to cuddle and enjoy but then kick it out when it grows big! And the previous cat just stopped coming to their door? What!? And they just assume it wonted to live at their neighbours? I hope they not only feed them, but take care as responsible adults should. Take a cat to the vet to take vaccinations and other treatments against flees and worms etc. And of course make sure the cat is spayed and neutered.

  14. It's not fair to say that owners who keep cats outside are irresponsible. I love cats but can't keep them indoors due to being allergic, so mine stays outside. She's got her own shelter outdoors (above the ground so stray dogs (and careless owners who let their dogs wander) can't get to her) and protected from the wind and rain with a cat bed, as well as being safe from other cats.

My first cat, whom I found out from I was allergic, was kept indoors and was a terror! We ended up giving her to a neighbor who kept her outside and she was right as rain. More things to play with outside, the company of other cats, plus she could hunt and do whatever it was she did.

I see nothing wrong with it. The cat comes when she's called and she's spayed, so no overpopulation. She doesn't wander out of our area (we live in a rural area) and is perfectly happy. She is up to date on everything as well.

  15. It's a toss up, sure they probably prefer to be outside (I'm talking about cats, not Duggars!) but the reality is if they are they can get eaten by coyotes or other random animals. They seem to live out in the country, so maybe it wouldn't get run over, but nature is a wild wild mother! I agree about the other cat probably can to a bad end. No cat just 'disappears' from his food source!

  16. I'm not overly fond of cats. But in farm country, cats roam free. No worrying about taking them to the vet or sending them out. Cats can make it by themselves.

  17. I am concerned for all the cats in each family. I'm afraid the kittens in the Duggar family will be treat too roughly. And, I fear for the J & A kitten that it will incur the same fate as the cat prior. Why would you ever nurture and kitten, make it part of your family and then allow it to go outside and not attempt to have it come in regularly? Not only are you not modeling how to take proper care of a pet; but you are being cruel to that animal. Josh and Anna are living in sweet denial it they truly believe their cat is living at a neighbors (then please show us your cat at that neigbor's home). Country life for a cat or busy road life can be sadly fatal.

  18. My drawings are in the background when Michelle was talking! How exciting! http://bethany.preciousinfants.com/2011/10/13/new-project-finished.aspx

I am so happy seeing that they used them!

  19. I hope the Duggars take better care of the kittens than they did of the dogs they were watching.

  20. Thought is was funny while Anna was talking abt how much mackynzie and micheal get along so gd know that micheal is old enuf to play in the background kynzie was pushing micheal off the ball lol love how both kids have developed there own personalities . And ppl serciously chill of the whole cat issues .most prefer the outdoors where they can roam stalk and chase birds squirrels and bugs the duggars r very gd ppl and would never harm an innocent animal .

  21. I guess Josh & Anna want a pet this time? I say this because when they got that first cat (the one they let live outside), Josh said they got it because they had a problem with mice in their house, and they wanted to take care of the problem 'naturally'. I hope if this new cat is a pet, they won't have it live outside, since they live right on a busy road.

  22. This is ridiculous all this talk about cats shouldn't be outside. They love being outside to catch lizards and whatnot. And so what if an inside cat lives a year or two longer than an outside one? The bigger the cat gets the more they ruin your furniture so otherwise you have to have their claws removed and that isn't very humane.

  23. I have never seen anyone put orphaned kittens into a plastic pitcher and wrap them in paper towels to keep them warm. The whole thing just made me uncomfortable and sad for the kittens.

  24. We have a two dogs and 1 cat and they
are treat like my children. They have
feelings of sadness, rejection. I is
cruel for Anna and Josh to bring a kitten into their home to satisfy there need. Then after a while they
put it outside. They wouldn't but
there children out side to live, and they shouldn't put that kitten outside either. If that was there intension all a long then they shouldn't have the kitten.

  25. Cats need to be outside to be with nature and claw the tree to keep their paws from hurting! I found it rude and unfair to say if I am letting my cat outside I am unfit to own a cat you don't know me or my cat! I don't mean to start a fight but I was hurt but what you said as I love my cats like family and we try to care for them the best we can!

  26. We live on a very busy street within city limits. That's the main reason we keep our cats inside. If you are in a rural area and decide you want to keep your cats outside, then fine. Just be aware that there are dangers in that too. It's a fact, ask any Vet, a cat that is kept outside lives a shorter time than an indoor cat.
Yes, a cat is going to scratch furniture but if such a thing is a major concern for a person than perhaps it would be better not to have any animal in your home.
Some people have good intentions when they take on the care of an animal. But not everyone is meant to have animals.

  27. In response to outdoor cats going missing: My landlord had an outdoor cat (had access to the barn - warm in the loft over the horses and to special cat boxes outside). Anyway, for two winters in a row she went missing and returned in the spring each time.
It turned out she had also made a home with the couple up the road who took her to Florida with them in the winter. Smart little cat!

    1. I agree. Truth can often sound harsh but as a cat lover and also a Duggar fan....I believe still that a fact needs to be known even when it sounds disagreeable. Josh and Anna are wonderful sweet people but one can disagree on a point without being defamatory or derrogatory. Profane is not a good way to make a point in my opinion anyway. Thought: If they want to teach the children how to treat a pet then why not borrow a kitten temporarily from Michell's? She has plenty of experience from working in a shelter and has taught her young ones how to care for kittens! Then she could take them back when they are a bit older. Hmmmmmmmmm. That might solve it for Josh and Anna....eh?
