Why So Many "J" Names?

Josh, Jana, John-David, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph. Do you notice a pattern? Ever wonder why the Duggar kids' names all start with the same letter? You may be surprised to hear that Jim Bob and Michelle did not set out to have a brood of children with "J" names.

As new parents, they fell in love with the name Joshua, after the courageous biblical character. Nearly two years later, Jim Bob and Michelle were blessed with twins. The two names that they chose, Jana and John-David, just happened to start with the letter "J." Not knowing how many more children God would give them, the young couple decided to name their next child, Jill, with a "J" name as well, just in case she was their last.

As their family grew, Jim Bob and Michelle continued the tradition so that none of their children would feel left out. The family has had a lot of fun choosing unique "J" names over the years; everyone likes to join in on the action!

What are your favorite "J" names?

  7. I've always liked the name Jana...I knew a girl by that name when I was younger, and I think her family was originally from the South. I think it suits Jana Duggar to a tee!

  10. My name is Jolene and during the 1980's I knew many classmates with J names. I also like Jubilee and Joyhannah (as opposed to Johannah).

We had three children before we realized there was a pattern with their names. They each had a K in their names somewhere...quite by accident too! So, when the 4th child came along we had to give her one as well...and now we're going on #5 and he, too, will have a K name in there somewhere.

  13. I think that Josh and Anna chose M to honor Michelle.
They didn't plan on sticking with M with Michael.

  14. I personally hope Josh and Anna pick whatever names they like, with no pattern following.

It's so strange, "J", in my experience, is the letter I hear most often in repeat letter names families.

  15. My 2nd childs name is Joshua and he is a J.R. so of course I love that name. And I love how they used Jinger with a J, very unique. I wish I would have thought to stick with 1 letter for all of my children.

  18. My kids all have J middle names - James, Josephine, and Jarrissa. Jarrissa was supposed to be Jarrett, which means brave, but she turned out to be a girl - so we feminized it.

  19. Back in March 1923, my parents, Jim & Josephine married. They gave birth to Joyce in Dec. 1923, Jasmine in 1925, Jessie in 1927 and James Roderick,Jr. in 1929. Sadly he was stillborn.
In 1939 they gave birth to another daughter, Josephine who was immediately nicknamed Joy.
In 1968, Joy gave birth to a son, on her father's birthday & named him James Roderick after her father. In 1979 Jim died and James played TAPS for his grandfather's funeral.

  30. I hope the rest of the Duggars don't follow in this tradition of using the same 1st letter for everyone's name. Think about it. By the time little Josie is ready, she may be left with only Q or X or Z!! Why not name 1st baby:A; 2nd baby:B; etc. At least they'll always know their birth order! Someone, please, break this trend.

    1. I'm so sick of this rhetoric. Names beginning with J have a rich and diverse history, spanning across various cultures and languages. From classic names like James and John to more unique choices such as Jasper and Juniper, J-names offer a wide array of options, each with its own special charm and significance.

Let's not forget the impact of iconic figures with J-names who have left their mark on history and popular culture. Think of the brilliant scientist and inventor, Thomas Edison, or the legendary musician and humanitarian, Johnny Cash. Jane Austen, with her timeless literary works, and Jackie Robinson, who broke barriers in sports, are further examples of the greatness associated with J-names.

Moreover, J-names often carry positive meanings and symbolize qualities like strength, kindness, and wisdom. Jacob, for instance, signifies "supplanter," highlighting the determination to overcome obstacles. Jessica represents "gift," embodying a sense of gratitude and appreciation.

In conclusion, dismissing names starting with J would be disregarding a treasure trove of wonderful options with deep cultural significance and inspiring legacies. Let's celebrate the diversity and greatness of J-names, appreciating the beauty they bring to the world of names and the individuals who bear them.

  31. Or maybe just use all the names of the Apostles or just only the names in the Bible - in order: Adam, Eve, Lilith, Cain, Abel....and so on.....
