Banana Cake: Duggar Style

One of our readers has requested that we post the Duggars' Banana Cake recipe. This cake was Grandpa Duggars' favorite; Jana made it for his last birthday with the family, in "18 Kids and Counting" Duggars' Big Thaw. We guarantee you'll fall in love. Unless you don't like bananas (which would be a tragedy); then this recipe is definitely not for you.

  2. How is using a cake mix "Homemade"? That is a wrong caption. Home Assembled, maybe.

  4. I've never tried it, and wouldn't use their recipe. But I might try it homemade. I'm scared of the aluminum in cake mixes!

  6. It sounds yummy, but I´m very reluctant to use mixes as I try to avoid all the additives that are loaded into what comes in a box. You can find simple cake recipes online and vanilla pudding is pretty easy to make (you could even make a sugar free version by putting two avocados, four bananas, and some vanilla in a food processor).

  8. I'm going to try this but make a little change.. I will put a second cake on top and leave it plain... so it will be "sandwiched" with the pudding and banana between the two cakes.

  9. Sounds good! I'm going to put whipped cream over the top of the bananas too. Like a banana pudding cake.

  11. I am sure with 19 kids its cheaper to use the box cake mix than homemade cake mix! I know with my family they wouls love this and I plan on making a smaller version of this for them

  15. I agree. I would consider most of their recipes as semi homemade. Most of their stuff comes from frozen, pop cans or canned. Just cause you open it and plop it together doesn't make it home made. Or maybe cause to me home made is made from scratch.

  16. removing the cake from the holes made: Hi there I am Lydia from the Netherlands and I don not understand this line. Wouyld you be so kind to write it in little childrens English :-) because it sounds like an great receipt. Thank you xxx

    Hi Lydia,

We would be happy to clarify step two for you. :)

To cut 1-inch holes in the cake, you will need to pull small pieces of cake out. After you have made the holes, pour the pudding over the cake, and make sure the pudding fills the holes.

    Does that help?

  18. Is the pudding instant?? That may sound like a dumb question, but I'm sure there have been even dumber questions asked!! LOL!!! I did use to make a "poke" cake. When I made it, I used a boxed cake mix, any flavor is fine, add oil, eggs(I ALWAYS add one extra egg than what the box calls for), and water(I ALWAYS used canned milk, instead of the water) and mix as directed. Bake in a 9x13 instead of round pans. Once you take it out of the oven, allow to cool for several minutes then, take a straw or you can use a wooden handle spoon and poke holes approx. an inch apart over all of the cake!! Then mix the instant pudding as directed pour it all over the cooled cake with holes. You can then top with Cool Whip and cover and chill!! Great cake that I'm sure you're going to love!!! Oh, I've not ever done it buy so folks use jello to pour over the cake and more times than not, it's then topped off with Cool Whip!!!

  19. @Jan Beckwith

    Hi Jan,

The pudding used in this recipe is instant. (It is the kind sold in a box that only requires milk.) Your recipe sounds delicious! :)

    Blessings,

  20. You say the instant is the kind sold in a box that requires milk. Doesn't regular pudding require milk also?
